Lardner , who , by the way , was a member of the chapter of which he ( Bro . Carter ) had the honour of being
a Past Sovereign . He was also pleased at being able to renew acquaintance with several old Masonic triends . In conclusion he thanked the M . vv . for the kindness and couitesy extended to him , and for the musical treat he and his co-visitor had so thoroughly enjoyed . Bro . Major Probyn , in the course of his response , said
that bro . Carter had the advantage of him , because he had seen the working of the clupter , which he ( Bro . Probyn ) had not . However , he had witnessed the efforts of the Installing Officer before in his own chapter , the Rose and Lily . Bro . Lardner was not only a good worker , but a good fellow in the bargain . He had to thank his old

friend , Bro . Berkley , for having afforded him the opportunity of partaking of the hospitality of the old Mount Calvary Chapter , and of listening to many charming musical selections . So highly had he enjoyed his visit that if invited again he should most eagerly avail himself of the opportunity . "The Health of the Past Sovereigns" was coupled with the names of Bros . Coffin , Nicol , Curlier , Berkley ,
and Lardner , all of whom said a few words in reply . Bros . Wilkinson , N . Prower , W . Maple , and V . Paas , was compelled to leave early , but his health , in his absence , was given very kindly by the Most Wise , and drunk cordially and enthusiasticall y by the brethren .
1 he proceedings were rendered most enjoyable by the instrumental and vocal efforts of Bro . Egbert Roberts and an efficient staff of artists . The Most Wise contributed a vocal selection of great excellence , and Bro . Major Williamson recited "Ihe Slave ' s Dream , " by Longfellow , with expiession and pathos . Bro . Pigache is to be complimented upon the unqualified success that attended his dehiit as a ruler in the Ancient and Accepted Rite .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .
At the recent examination at Trinity College , London , in the Theory of Music , Boote , Broad , and Watson obtained Honours , while Chinneck and Leeming gained Certificates . Considering that this is a new departure at the School , and that the average age of the candidates was under 13 ( the examination being open to candidates of any age ) the School has done well to pass 50 per cent , of its candidates .

CENTENARY OF THE ROYAL BRUNSWICK LODGE , No . 296 , AT SHEFFIELD .
In the year 1793 14 worthy brethren , all of whom were then subscribing members of Lodge , No . 72 ( which had met for many years at the Royal Oak , King-street , Sheffield , but which lapsed very soon afterwards ) , petitioned Grand Lodge for a new warrant .
Their petition was favourably received , and a warrant was on the Sth day of July , 1 793 , granted by Richard Slater Milnes , Esq ., M . P ., the Prov . Grand Master for the County of York , acting under the authority of the Grand Lodge of England , H . R . H . George Augustus Prince of Wales , Grand Master , to James Woollen , Joseph Hudson , Richard Jessop , | ames Richardson ,
John Law , John Northall , and Ebenezer Hancock ( all old Sheffield families ) to form and hold a lodge to be called the Royal Brunswick Lod ge , to meet at the Royal Oak , King-street , Sheffield ; the first three petitioners' being appointed respectivel y , the first Worshipful Master , and Senior and Junior Wardens . Unfortunatel y the minutes of the lodge
from its commencement to the year 1810 are lost , but the Treasurer ' s cash book from the beginning is still in existence . From it we find that the lodge was exceedingly prosperous for many years , and during the first live years considerably over 100 Masons were " made . " The father of the lodge , Bro . James Woollen , was a bookseller , and the keeper of the British
Circulating Library . He resided at No . 32 , Highstreet , and filled the chair of the lodge for no less than 13 years . He died in May , 1814 , and was buried with full Masonic honours at Ecclesall . One of the founders , John Northall , was the editor and publisher of the Sheffield I ouranl newspaper . It is interesting to learn that a sou of one of the founders is still living ,
and resident at Sheffield— -Dr . Joseph Law , son of the above-named John Law . The lodge , perhaps , stands unique in having no less than 28 Past Masters , still living , all having been Masters of the Royal Brunswick Lodge . The lodge was first held at the Royal Oak , in King-street , and subsequently at the Crown and Shakespeare ,
Sycamorestreet ; the Ball Inn , Campo-lane ; Angel Inn , Angelstreet ; Freemasons' Tavern , Queen-street ; George Inn , Market-place ; Black Rock , Castle-street ; Falstaff Inn , Wicker ; Music Hall , Surrey-street ; and the presont Masonic Hall , Surrey-street . It has borne the following numbers : from 1 793 to 181 , 1 , No . 527 ; from 1813 W 1831 , No . 556 ; from 1831 to 1862 , No ,
373 ; and from 1862 , No . 296 . 'The centenary meeting of the lodge took place on Monday , the 10 th inst , the W . M ., Bro . Charles Pawson , in the chair . After the ordinary business of the meeting had been transacted , Bro . W . H . STAGEY , P . M ., mentioned that Bro . W Longden , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., would early next year , if
spared , celebrate his jubilee as a Past Master of the lodge , he having been installed as W . M . for the first time in the year 1841 , and proposed a resolution acknowled ging the many services which Bro . Longden had rendered to the lodge in years past . At the after meeting , Bro . STACKY gave the brethren a short resume of the history of early Freemasonry in
Sheffield , and of the Royal Brunswick Lodge , which he is now preparing , A further celebration of the centenary took place on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., when about 60 of the members of the lodge , together with the Worshipful Masters
of the sister lodges in Sheffield and other visitors , dined together at Haddon Hall , a place eminently appropriate and adapted for such an occasion . Bro . HKNKY SMITH , D . P . G . M ., proposed the toast of the day— " Success to the Royal Brunswick Lodge . " After expressing the regret of himself and all the

The chapter was then closed and adjourned , and the companion ' s partook of one of those cosy , pleasant little dinners f 6 r which the host ( Mr . Green ) and his chef are famous . Comp . W . unassuming , genial way , and endeavoured to make the proceedings pass off satisfactorily , notwithstanding the tropical heat of the weather , which rendered confinement indoors somewhat irksome and uncomfortable . Comp . VV . H . Lee . in replying to the toast of "The Prov . Grand Officers , " gave a very glowing account of the Prov . Grand Chapter . Comp . C . H . Kohler , I . P . Z ., in response to h s health ,
made a breezy little speech , overflowing with the milk of human kindness and goodwill . The ME '/ .. cailed upon Comp . Higgins to reply to the toast of " The Past Principals , " which he did in a neat speech . The M . E . Z . then said that he felt sure that the
companions would not like to separate without drinking "The Health of the Father and Treasurer of the Chapter , Comp . Thiellay , " who , not being well , had returned to town . He said that the chapter owed a great debt of gratitude to that companion . This toast having been honoured , the proceedings terminated .

Centenary Of The Royal Brunswick Lodge , No. 296 , At Sheffield.
