Equipment of the Metropolitan Volunteers amounted on Friday the 21 st instant , to £ 35 , 700 , the sum asked for being £ 100 , 000 . Brethren intending to subscribe for copies of Dr . Metham's " Masonic Orations , " delivered at the "Consecration of lodges and chapters , dedications of halls , " & c , vvith introduction on " Freemasonry in Devon

A quarterly communication of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland was held in Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , on the 19 th inst . There was a large attendance of members , presided over by Comp . Jas . Webster , Grand Recorder , and First Principal of No . 1 . Comp . Jas . Crjchton acted as Second Grand Principal , and Comp . J . Shields as Third Grand Principal . It was
agreed that charters be issued in favour of two new chapters—one at Hong Kong , to be named St . Andrew ' s , and the other at Sydney , N . S . W ., to be named Temperance . It was resolved to purchase the property of No . 19 , Hill-street , Edinburgh , for the purpose of converting it
into a hall and offices for the accommodation of Supreme Grand Chapter ; and plans prepared by Comp . P . L . Henderson were remitted to the Committee . The Grand Scribe E ., Comp . R . S . Brown , reported that £ 250 had been paid over to the extended scheme of Scottish Masonic Benevolence . The other business was routine .
It is stated that the Prince of Wales , being desirous that the leper , Yoxall , whose case has been so prominently before the public for some days past , shall not be a sufferer though the loss of his means of livelihood , has sent a cheque for his benefit to the honorary secretary of the Executive Committee of the Father Damien Memorial Fund . His Royal Highness has also sent a cheque for £ 105 to the fund vvhich is being raised by Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead in aid of the Pasteur Institute of Paris .
It IS understood that Bro . the Earl of Zetland , who has been appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in succession to the Marquis of Londonderry , resigned , will enter on the duties of his office in the second week of July . In the grounds of Richview , Clonskeagh , the annual athletic sports of the Masopic Institution there established , will take place to-morrow ( Saturday ) afternoon ,
the 29 th instant . The entertainment will commence at 2 p . m ., and at the close prizes will be distributed amongst the successful competitors . Military bands will perform selections of music , and the occasion cannot fail to be a pleasing one alike to the pupils and to the organisers of the interesting fete . The School is doing excellent work , and the opportunity will be availed of by many , to inspect personally the means of instruction that it affords .
The Prince and Princess of Wales ' s pic-nic at Virginia Water on Saturday last brought Ascot week to a most enjoyable conclusion . In the afternoon the Prince and Prince Albert Victor , with Bros , the Earl of Clonmel and C . Sykes , M . P ., drove from Sunningdale , in Bro . the Earl of Fife's coach' to the Cavalry Barracks at Windsor to see the cricket match between the 1 st Life Guards and I Zingari . At six o ' clock they joined the Princess at Virginia Water .
The fine weather of the present week has been extremely favourable to cricket , and several long scores appear in the matches that have been played . In the M . C . C . v . University of Cambrid ge Match , Mr . C . D . Buxton made 10 S not out for the former , and Mr . C . P . Foley 113 for the latter . At the Oval , Abel and Read scored 13 S and 136 respectively , against Oxford , while Mr . W . W . Read contributed gi , and Mr . F . Fielding 75 .
In the Sussex v . Yorkshire match , W . _ Newham scored no for the former , while at Derby W . c > ugg was run out after putting together 104 for the home county against Leicestershire , which was beaten in one innings with 133 runs to spare . The New York Herald says that considerable excitement prevails in Masonic circles at Scranton , Pa ., over the condemnation , by the Grand Master , Bro . McCalla , of a lodge belonging to the Cerneau rite of Scottish Masonry . The introduction of the Cerneau rite into this region was regarded by the ancient northern jurisdiction as a sort of Masonic schism . It is alleged
against the new rite that it confers degrees easily , unworthily , and cheaply ; and sometimes sold its honours for solid cash . As a result , men of no merit were found displaying evidences of Masonic dignity to vvhich they were not entitled . These and other offences moved the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania to declare the Cerneau rite clandestine .
The " International Theatre " erected in the grounds of the Paris Exhibition by Mr . Seymour Wade is now quite finished , but was not opened as originally announced , owing to the administration having failed to instal the electric light , as contracted . After Mr . Wade had succeeded in the unprecedented feat of completing a theatre capable of holding 2500 in 35 daysthis
, is to be regretted . It is hoped , however , that the delay will be . only for a few days . The Theatre is charmingly decorated throughout with tapestry , and the curtain is ot blue velvet , an entire novelty in Paris ; there are spacious promenades both on ground floor and gallery , in fact , the

The New York Herald says that considerable excitement prevails in Masonic circles at Scranton , Pa ., over the condemnation , by the Grand Master , Bro . McCalla , of a lodge belonging to the Cerneau rite of Scottish Masonry . The introduction of the Cerneau rite into this region was regarded by the ancient northern jurisdiction as a sort of Masonic schism . It is alleged
against the new rite that it confers degrees easily , unworthily , and cheaply ; and sometimes sold its honours for solid cash . As a result , men of no merit were found displaying evidences of Masonic dignity to vvhich they were not entitled . These and other offences moved the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania to declare the Cerneau rite clandestine .
The " International Theatre " erected in the grounds of the Paris Exhibition by Mr . Seymour Wade is now quite finished , but was not opened as originally announced , owing to the administration having failed to instal the electric light , as contracted . After Mr . Wade had succeeded in the unprecedented feat of completing a theatre capable of holding 2500 in 35 daysthis
, is to be regretted . It is hoped , however , that the delay will be . only for a few days . The Theatre is charmingly decorated throughout with tapestry , and the curtain is ot blue velvet , an entire novelty in Paris ; there are spacious promenades both on ground floor and gallery , in fact , the
whole endeavour has been evidently to make the house cool and airy , thus forming a delightful retreat from the glare of the Exhibition . The air of the auditorium will be cooled and energised by an entirely new process , and cool refreshments . will be provided by an eminent Parisian Restaurateur .
