( Craft JHagonrjL MACDONALD LODGE ( No . 1216 ) . —The installation meeting ' of this lodgejwas held at the lodge rooms , at the head quarters of the First Surrey Volunteer Rifles , at Camberwell , on the 12 th inst ., when a large attendance of members and visitors testified to the interest taken in the continued progress of the Macdonald . After the confirmation of the minutes and the passing to the F . C . Degree of the initiates in attendance , Bro . D . C . Ross , the W . M . elect , was presented to the VV . M ., Bro . W . C . Hale , for installation , and in due course was placed in the chair of K . S . by his immediate predecessor . The newly-installed Master appointed his officers in rotation , and Bro . Bridges , P . M ., having delivered the customary addresses , the proceedings

connected with the installation ceremony were completed . The Auditor ' s report met with a favourable reception , the balance in favour of the lodge being considered most satisfactory . After the dispatch of some routine business the W . M . announced to the brethren that he had made arrangements for the banquet to take place at the Bridge House Hotel , instead of the large mess room attached to headquarters , and he fully explained his reasons for this

departure from former custom , and satisfied his hearers that his reasons were good and sufficient . Consequently , on the closing of the lodge , each brother present declared his agreement with the _ W . M . by accepting the accommodation provided in the conveyances then in waiting , and by means of which they speedily reached thc banquet room prepared for them b y Messrs . Roberts . We must candidly admit that , notwithstanding the hitherto good repute in which the

festive gatherings of the Macdonald in their "mess room " have always been held , the contrast on this occasion , having regard to display and service , was greatly in favour of the view taken by the new VV . M . that change was necessary . At all events , a more elaborate menu , with excellent wines and liberal attendance , could not have been desired , and the proprietors of the hotel deserved thc expressions of satisfaction which their

efforts to please called forth . After clearance of the cloth , the W . M . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , his remarks being greatly assisted by the appropriate Shakesperian quotations with which the menu card was liberally besprinkled . These were not of the usual character , but appeared to be a perfectly new series , and the result of much research on the part of the compiler , who , it was whispered to us , was the VV . M . himself . Whether that be

so or not the work was very creditable . The toast of " The VV . M . " was enthusiasticall y received , and in a manner which testified to his popularity . In reply , the VV . M . again referred to the departure from former usage in leaving the lodge rooms for a distant hotel , and his remarks called forth a further endorsement of the policy he had adopted . "The Visitors , " in responding for the compliment paid to them , also expressed their conviction that the best interests of the lodge would be advanced by the new arrangement .

The customary acknowledgments of services of Past Masters and officers were made and duly responded to . The proceedings of a delightful evening were interspersed by excellent singing and recitals , amongst which may be particularly noticed the recitation by Bro . James Stevens , P . M . ( the originator of the lodge ) , of the admirable Masonic poem " Masons' Vows , " which he appears to have made quite his own . With the T y ler's toast this most enjoyable gathering came to a conclusion at a reasonable hour .

UPTON LODGE ( No . 1227 ) . —The usual assembly of this very piosperous lodge was held at their ordinary place of meeting at the Spotted Dog . The VV . M ., Bro . A . W . Fenner , occupied thechairof K . S ., andhisofficers being present , opened the lodge in due form . There was a large attendance of the members and Past Masters ; among the latter were Bros . G . Brown , Andrews , John Bellamy , G . Steward , the first Master of the lodge . The visitors

included Bros . A . H . Hickinson , S . VV . 228 ; J . Myers , 405 ( Scotland ); VV . VVright , 1524 ; VV . G . Kent , P . S . VV . 1297 ( West Kent ) . The lodge having been opened , Bros . Tubefield and Morris wete examined and made Master Masons . Having resumed , a ballot was taken for Mr . VV . H . Sneth , and A . Hartman , and the brethren were unanimous in favour of each . Mr . H . D . Ellison , who had been previously balloted for , being present , each of the

candidates were severally initiated in excellent form , the ceremonies in every case were most admirably worked , the various officers being onc and all well up in the ritual , and the working of the ceremonies was rendered the more impressive by the excellent manner in which Bro . Sherrin , the Organist , discharged his duties . The VV . M ., Bro . Fenner , and his ollicers were appointed as a committee to make arrangements for the summer banquet .

WEST SMITHFIELD LODGE ( No . 1623 ) . — The regular meeting of this lodge was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street , VV . C , on Thursday , the 19 II 1 inst ., when Bro . Pennefather , VV . M ., opened the lodge . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The business of the meeting consisted of two

ceremonies , Bros . Thornton , Brasher , and Cooper being raised , and Messrs . Chamber and Wareham , who had been successfully balloted for , being initiated . Both ceremonies were performed in Bro . Pennefather ' s usual excellent manner , who , on rising , received the congratulations of the visitors and members .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet at the Freemasons' Tavern . After the cloth had been cleared , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured . The next toast was that of "The Initiates , " who returned their thanks . Bro . T . Adams , acting ; I . P . M ., next proposed " Thc Health of the VV . M ., " complimenting him on his great success up to the present time . They all

knew thc modesty of their VV . M ., and he would refrain from saying more , but ask them to join him in drinking his health . The VV . M . returned thanks for the reception of this toast at the hands of the brethren , and was sure they would all give him credit for trying to do his best for the lodge . He had great pleasure in proposing "The Health of the Visitors . " They were honoured by three visitors that

night , viz . Bros . Lazarus , 1017 ; Stafford , I 3 ()( 5 ; andj . F . Van Raalte , W . M . 917 . The toast was received with full Masonic honours , and the visitors responded . The VV . M . next proposed " The P . M . 's . " Bros . Elliott and Adams replied . Next followed the toast of "The Officers of the Lodge . " Bros . Lardner , Howes , Stephens , VV . Butt , Greenwood , and Snow returned thanks . " The Lay Members " was then given , to which Bro . King replied ,

stating that he was doing his best to learn lodge duties , should he be called upon at any time to discharge them , and thanked the VV . M ., visitors , and oflicers for the kindly reception the toast had received . The Tyler's toast followed . In addition to the brethren mentioned there were also present Bros . Renaut , Wilkinson , McKay , Walter , Silver , T . Butt , Milton , Gaskin , VV . G . Smith , and others . The VV . M . was ably supported by his Wardens , Bros . Malthouse , S . VV ., and M . Butt , I . W .

GATESHEAD-ON-TYNE . —Lodge of Industry ( No . 48 ) . —Another agreeable meeting of this old and flourishing lodge was held at the rooms , No . 34 , Denmark-street , on Monday , the 23 rd inst ., when there was a capital muster of members and visitors . The minutes of the last regular meeting were read and confirmed , after which the ballot box was freely used , and

Jacob Atkinson , George Parker , and William Clark riiomlinson , all of whom being in addendance were regularly initiated into thc mysteries by the VV . Master . The working tools were explained

by the J . W ., and the charge was given in an impressive manner by the VV . M . Bro . M . Corbitt , P . M ., was elected for the third time to represent the lodge on the Charities Committee for the province . A vote of condolence was unanimously agreed to be sent to the family of the late Bro . Anthony Clapham , P . M ., whosedecease was announced

since last meeting , hour brethren were proposed as joining members , and two names were submitted as initiates , after which heavy programme of work—present and prospective —the lodge was closed at 9 . 15 p . m . The brethren afterwards assembled at the refreshment board , and a happy evening was spent untill 11 p . m ., when the company dispersed .

NORWICH . — Social Lodge ( No . 93 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held at the Masonic Club , No . 23 , St . C . in an exceedingly efficient manner . The lodge was

afterwards closed in ancient form . The brethren then adjourned to the . banqucting room , where an excellent supper had been prepared , and upon the removal of the cloth honoured the usual loyal , Masonic , and complimentary toasts , which were interspersed with

some excellent singing , notably that of Bros . Brookes , Thouless , and T . C . Atkinson , the latter rendering that pleasing ballad " The Iiish Emigrant" in an exquisite and beautiful manner . The brethren" separated shortly after eleven o ' clock , having spent a very enjoyable evening . This is a very prosperous lodge and is efficiently worked .

MANCHESTER . —Lodge of Affability ( No . 317 ) . —The usual meeting of the above lodge was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper-street , on Thursday , the 5 th inst . The W . M ., Bro . ; W . Nicholl , presided , supported by his officers and some twenty other brethren , including three visitors . When the lodge had been duly opened and the minutes read and confirmed , the VV . M . passed Bro . Berry to the Second Degree , after which Bro . Dawson , P . M .,

assumed the chair , and raised Bro . Jolly to the Sublime Degree of a M . M . When the lodge was closed the brethren partook of sup . per , and spent the remainder of the evening most pleasantly together . During the evening Bro . John Bladon , P . M ., Prov . G . D . of C , appeared on the scene , and was warmly greeted and congratulated on all sides on his appointment and investiture that day at Blackburn , by the Prov . Grand Master , Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , as Asst . Director of Ceremonies .

WOOLWICH . —Nelson Lodge ( No . 700 ) . —The usual monthly meeting of the above lodge took place on Wednesday , the iSth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Williamstreet , under the presidency of the VV . for of a candidate , who , however , did not put in an appearance . The minutes and accounts having been passed , the lodge was closed in due form . The brethren having partaken of a neat little collation , admirably served by Bro . Moulder , cordially responded to the usual loyal and Masonic toasts . Bro . Warren then proposed the toast of "The VV . M ., " ancl said that it

was one that would meet with a spontaneous and hearty reception from all present . The geniality , good temper , and energy of their VV . M ., combined with ' the excellent example he had set in the work and niangeinent of the lodge , had strongly impressed him ( Bro . Warren ) , and he believed that if Bro . Wilkins had had greater opportunities he would have both delighted and as strongly

impressed them with the extent of his close attention to the lessons of the Past Masters , whose pupil he had been , both privately and at the lodge of instruction . Bro . Wilkins had one night more to reign over them , and he , Bro . VVarren , felt that he would leave the chair with the best wishes of every member of the lodge , and that they would own that he had discharged his duties with credit to

himself and honour to the lodge . Bro . Wilkins , in response , thanked Bro . VVarren for his graceful comp liment , and the brethren for their expression of it in the same brotherly and courteous manner that had ever distinguished them . He could not help feeling a regret that he had not had more to do during the past year . Without new blood it was almost

impossible to keep up the prestige of a lodge , while at the same time the addition of it materially added to its strength and importance . What there had been to do he had done to the best of his ability , and had been aided admirably by every officer of the lodge . Thc next toast was that of "The Past Masters , " and in giving it , the VV . M . congratulated the lodge upon the number of Past Masters present ,

especially at the presence of the father of thc Past Masters , Bro . J . Rowland . . He was pleased to see him once more restored to health , and trusted he would once more resume the interest in thc lodgethat had been always so conspicuously shown by him in times past . Bro . Wilkins also spoke highly of Bros . Warren and Norman , who had been of incalcuable service to him while working up to the chair , and

to the whole of the Past Masters the thanks of the lodge were due . After a reply from Bro . Warren , Bro . Rowland regretted that his illness , almost without cessation since last Christmas , had prevented his attendance , but he could assure them that his heart had always been with them in spirit , and their kind and cordial reception of his name that night proved to him that he had not been forgotten by them . He congratulated the W . M . upon the excellent

name he bore as a true " Nelson " worker , and hoped to be spared for many years , either to assist at or rejoice in the prosperity of the lodge . Bro . Bowles endorsed every word that had fallen from his colleague , and Bro . Butt said , " For these and other mercies please receive my most earnest thanks . " The toast of " The Visitors " was responded to by the brethren above named , and Bro . Hobson replied for " The Officers , " and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings .

WORKINGTON . —Sun and Sector Lodge ( No . 9 62 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lod ™ was held in the Masonic Hall , Portland-square , on Wednesday , the iSth inst . Subsequently the brethren , adjourned to refreshment , and spent a couple of hours in toast , song , and sentiment . LIVERPOOL . —Lodge of Israel ( No . 1502 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of the members of this excellently-conducted lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Hopestreet , on Monday , the iOth inst ., when there assembled a numerous and highly-influential array of brethren .
