Prov . S . G . Warden in connection with the Jubilee celebration of Queen Victoria . He is a Life Governor of all three Institutions , and has served four Stewardships for the Girls' School , three for the Boys' School , and one for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

The same year he was a founder and first H . of the Enfield Chapter , No . 1237 , Enfield , and in 1878 vvas installed M . E . Z ., being about the same time

appointed Prov . G . S . B . in the Provincial Grand Chapter of Middlesex . He was also a founder and first M . E . Z . of the Fitzroy Chapter , No . 569 , and is now Scribe E . of Chapter No . 1237 , as well as Treasurer and M . E . Z , of Chapter No . 11 . GRAND STANDARD BEARERS . Bro . J L . STOTHERT was initiated in the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 53 , Bath , in the year 185 S , and six years later occupied the chair of VV . M . He is a joining member of the Lodge of Rectitude , No . 335 , Corsham , Wilts , and in 1866 and 1868 was successively Prov . G . Registrar

and Prov . S . G . Warden of Somersetshire . He represents his lodge on the Charity Organisation Commiltee of Somersetshire , and is a Life Governor of and once Steward for the Benevolent Institution ; has qualified as Vice-Patron of the Boys' School , and acted first as Steward at one of its Festivals , and has served two Stewardships for the Girls' School , for which he has constituted both himself and his daughter Vice-Patrons .

Bro . M . C . PECK has seen much active service as a Mason , having been initiated in the Minerva Lodge , No . 250 , Hull , as far back as 1859 . In 1861 he was appointed its Secretary , and was annually re-appointed till last year , when after 26 years' diligent discharge of the duties he resigned his office into other hands , and accepted the less onerous but equally responsible position of Treasurer , being at the same time one of the Trustees

of the lodge as well as of its Benevolent and Building Funds . In 1864 he was founder and first W . M . of the Sykes Lodge , No . 1040 , Driffield , and ten years later he assisted in the foundation of the Alexandra Lodge , No . 1 5 , Hornsea . He is also a joining member of the Humber Lodge , No . 57 , and Masier for the second time of the Humber Installed Masters Lodge of Instruction , besides being honorary member of several of the lodges in

North and East Yorkshire . In 1862 he was invested Prov . G . Supt . of Works North and East Yorkshire , and in 1866 the late Earl of Zetland appointed him to the arduous office of Prov . G . Secretary , an office which he has continued to hold ever since , and still holds , to the very great benefit of the Craft in the province . Indeed , in 1881 his valuable services were recognised by the brethren , who presented

him with a valuable testimonial of silver plate , while last year the present Earl of Zetland still more conspicuously confirmed the approval of the brethren by conferring on him the rank of a Past Prov . S . G . Warden in connection with the celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee . He was exalted in 1861 , and was installed M . E . Z . of the Minerva Chapter , No . 250 , in 1867 . He is a subscribing member of the Humber

and Kingston Chapters , and honorary member of several others , and since 1867 has held the office of Prov . G . Scribe E ., concurrently with that of Prov . G . Secretary . He was advanced in 1861 , and was installed W . M . of the Minerva Mark Lodge , No . 12 , in 1866 . He was installed E . C . of the Ancient York Conclave of Redemption of the Order of the Temple in 1868 , having been Prov . G . Chancellor of Yorkshire in 1864 . He was

perfected Rose Croix in the Ancient York Chapter of Redemption in 1863 , and vvas installed M . W . S . in 1882 , having in the meantime received the 30 in 1 S 70 . He is a Life-Governor of all our Charities , and has twice served as Steward for the Boys' School . Lastly , he has done good service to Masonic literature by editing and publishing the best English edition of Mackey ' s " Lexicon of Freemasonry , " besides many lectures and orations on Masonry .

GRAND ORGANIST . Bro . W . A . BARRETT , who succeeds Bro . Sir . A . Sullivan as Grand Organist , has distinguished himself in all the various branches of Masonry in vvhich he has graduated . He was initiated in the Alfred Lodge , No . 340 , Oxford , in the year 1 S 64 , and within 12 months was invested as its Inner Guard , while in 1865 and 1866 he was appointed successfully Prov .

G . Steward and Prov . G . Organist of Oxfordshire , tor many years we hear nothing of his proceedings in Craft Masonry , but in 18 77 he re-appears on the scene as a founder and first W . M . of the Orpheus Lodge , No . 1706 , and three years later we find him again in the same two-fold capacity of a founder and first W . M . of the Eurydice Lodge , No . 1920 , the Secretaryshi p of which latter ledge he has held continuously since his retirement from the

chair . In 1884 he was Prov . G . Registrar of Surrey . He is also a R . A . Mason , having been exalted in the Alfred Chapter , No . 340 , and is a founder and first Z . of the Orpheus Chapter , No . 1706 , and a P . Z . of the St . Peter Chapter , Westminster , No . 1537 . But he was by no means idle in the interval between these two more active parts of his Masonic connection . Having been advanced in the University Mark Lodge in 1865 , he was

appointed G . Organist of the Maik Grand Lodge the year following , and besides being founder and first Master of the Menatschim Mark Lodge , is a Royal Ark Mariner . He was also the first M . P . S . of the Villiers Conclave of the Order of Rome and Red Cross of Constantine , and Viceroy for Middlesex in 1867 ; was installed K . T . in the Grove Encampment , Ewell , in 1868 , and founder and first E . P . of the Blondel Preceptory in 1877 . He

was founder and first M . W . S . of the Orpheus Chapter of Rose Croix , 18 , in the A . and A . Rite , and received the 3 o ° in 1879 . In his profession he holds hig h rank , being a Mus . Bac . Oxon ., a Vicar Choral of St . Paul ' s Cathedral , H ^ M . Assistant-Inspector of Music in Training Colleges , Editor of the Musical Times and Musical Editor of the Morning Post , besides being

the author of several valuable contributions to musical literature . Lastly , he has supported our Charitable Institutions , being a Life Governor of the Boys' School and an occasional contributor to the Benevolent Institution , and having served the office of Steward at one of the Girls' School Festivals . The record is in all respects one of vvhich Bro . Barrett has every reason to be proud

The New Grand Officers.

GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . WALTER HOPEKIRK , of whose career we gave a detailed account last year when he was appointed Assistant Grand Pursuivant , has been pro . moted to the office of Grand Pursuivant .

ASSISTANT GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . T . W . WHITMARSH has seen some 21 years' service as a Mason but has contented himself with fulfilling the duties required of him in one lodge and chapter . Thus he was initiated in the Buckingham and Chandos Lodge , No . 1150 , in 1867 , and served as VV . Master in 1876 ; and he was exalted to the R . A . Degree in the Stability Chapter , No . 217 , in 18 73 , and was installed in the chair of Z . in 1883 .

Provincial Grand Lodge Of West Yorkshire.

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF WEST YORKSHIRE .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire was held at the Wakefield Town Hall , on the nth inst . There was a very large attendance , about 330 Masons being present , of whom upwards of go were Present or Past Prov . Grand Officers . All the principal rooms at the Town Hall had been engaged for the occasion from the Corporation , and they were set apart for the comfort and convenience of the members of ( lie

Craft . Excellent arrangements for the gathering had been made by the Masters of the three Wakefield lodges—Bros . Fred Lee , Fred Simpson and Ellis Pickersgill—and other brethren , and much credit is due to them ' for the admirable manner in which they had attended to every little . detail with a view to promote the comfort and convenience of the visitors . The Council Chamber , in which the meeting was held , had been arranged in

accordance with Masonic requirements , the dais , or platform , the avenue up the centre of the room , and the corridors of the building being carpeted vvith crimson cloth by Bro . W . H . Kingswell . A number of beautiful silk banners belonging to various lodges and also the Provincial Grand Lodge banner vvere displayed in the Chamber . A collection of choice healthy plants enlivened the corridors , banqueting hall , & c . Bro .

Alderman Henry Lee , the Mayor , who wore his beautiful chain of office , offered a warm welcome to the visitors , and his Worship and his son entertained the distinguished visitors in the Mayor ' s parlour . The lodge vvas opened in the Council Chamber at 1 . 45 by the Masters of the three Wakefield Lodges , Bro . Fred Lee being the ' W . M ., Bro . Pickersgill , S . W ., and Bro . Simpson , J . W . At two o ' clock the R . W . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Thomas William Tew , J . P ., P . M . 910 , Past G . D . of England , and his Deputy

Prov . G . M ., Bro . Hy . Smith , P . M . 387 , Past G . D . of England , enteredthe Council Chamber , together with the Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers , and Provincial Grand Lodge was opened . The ofiicers were saluted , the roll of lodges was called over by Bro . Ibberson , P . G . Reg ., and the roll of Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers was called . The minutes of the Provincial Grand Lodge , held at Heckmondwike on the 5 th October , vvere taken as read .

The R . W . PROV . GRAND MASTER then delivered a long and interesting address . ( Pressure on our space compels us to hold this address over til ! our next issue . ) Bro . W . F . SMITHSON , of Leeds , the Chairman of the Charity Committee , read the report , which showed that 2000 guineas had been raised for the Queen ' s Jubilee presentations , and lhat there was a balance of ¦ £ 41 5 s . 6 d . in the bank .

Bro . W . WATSON made a statement as to the formation of a Masonic Library and Museum at Wakefield , and exhorted all Masons to do what they could to obtain contributions towards it . On the motion of Bro . the Rev . Dr . SMYTH , G . Chap , of England , a resolution was passed voting nearly £ 50 for the purchase of books , furniture , and fittings for the proposed new library .

The next business was the election of Treasurer for the province . The appointment , vvhich is held for one year , is the only office of the Provincial Grand Lodge which is in the gift of the brethren , and it may be mentioned that it is 45 years since a Wakefield Mason held the distinguished office . Bro . FOURNESS , the retiring Treasurer , proposed Bro . Henry Oxley ,

Past Master of the Wakefield Lodge , No . 495 , as Treasurer for the ensuing year . He said that Bro . Oxley was known throughout the whole province , and wherever known was esteemed , and in every way he was well qualified for the office . Bro . Fourness concluded his remarks , amidst applause , by formally proposing Bro . Oxley as his successor .

Bro . Lieut .-Col . CHARLESWORTH , J . P ., P . Prov . G . W ., asaPast Mastei of the Wakefield Lodge , seconded the nomination , and in very eulog istic terms spoke of the great services Bro . Oxley had rendered to the Craft , and alluded to the active part he took in the erection of the new Masonic Hall in Wakefield , and in raising the chief part of the funds for that

purpose . He said the appointment of Bro . Oxley would not only be an honour to that brother and to his lodge , but also to the town of Wakefield . After making some further remarks , he concluded by saying that , from his own personal knowledge of Bro . Oxley , he could speak in the highest terms of his undoubted ability , uprightness of character , and irreproachable integrity .

Bro . Col . HARTLEY , J . P ., P . P . S . G . W ., also a P . M . of the Wakefield Lodge , warmly supported the proposition , and added that the election 0 Bro . Oxley would be regarded as a great compliment to the brethren ol Wakefield . * Bro . C . L . MASON , P . P . G . Treas ., expressed , on behalf of the Leeds brethren , their hearty concurrence in the appointment , He commented on

the fact that Bro . Oxley , as Charity Steward of his lodge , had collected on behalf of the Masonic Charities upwards of ^ 400 during the last three years ; and that for the forthcoming Festival ot the Girls' School he hao secured no less than 16 Stewards from the brethren of his lod ge—the larg es number from any lodge in the province . of the same lodge as Bro . Oxley , but , as "father" of another WaKen Lodge ( Sincerity , 1019 ) , it gave him the greatest pleasure to support t nomination , and if Bro . Oxley were appointed it would be regarded w the greatest satisfaction by the brethren of his own lodge . . ¦ „ This proposition was put to the meeting and carried unanimou y > amidst enthusiastic applause . r Bro . The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire was held at the Wakefield Town Hall , on the nth inst . There was a very large attendance , about 330 Masons being present , of whom upwards of go were Present or Past Prov . Grand Officers . All the principal rooms at the Town Hall had been engaged for the occasion from the Corporation , and they were set apart for the comfort and convenience of the members of ( lie

Craft . Excellent arrangements for the gathering had been made by the Masters of the three Wakefield lodges—Bros . Fred Lee , Fred Simpson and Ellis Pickersgill—and other brethren , and much credit is due to them ' for the admirable manner in which they had attended to every little . detail with a view to promote the comfort and convenience of the visitors . The Council Chamber , in which the meeting was held , had been arranged in

accordance with Masonic requirements , the dais , or platform , the avenue up the centre of the room , and the corridors of the building being carpeted vvith crimson cloth by Bro . W . H . Kingswell . A number of beautiful silk banners belonging to various lodges and also the Provincial Grand Lodge banner vvere displayed in the Chamber . A collection of choice healthy plants enlivened the corridors , banqueting hall , & c . Bro .

Alderman Henry Lee , the Mayor , who wore his beautiful chain of office , offered a warm welcome to the visitors , and his Worship and his son entertained the distinguished visitors in the Mayor ' s parlour . The lodge vvas opened in the Council Chamber at 1 . 45 by the Masters of the three Wakefield Lodges , Bro . Fred Lee being the ' W . M ., Bro . Pickersgill , S . W ., and Bro . Simpson , J . W . At two o ' clock the R . W . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Thomas William Tew , J . P ., P . M . 910 , Past G . D . of England , and his Deputy

Prov . G . M ., Bro . Hy . Smith , P . M . 387 , Past G . D . of England , enteredthe Council Chamber , together with the Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers , and Provincial Grand Lodge was opened . The ofiicers were saluted , the roll of lodges was called over by Bro . Ibberson , P . G . Reg ., and the roll of Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers was called . The minutes of the Provincial Grand Lodge , held at Heckmondwike on the 5 th October , vvere taken as read .

The R . W . PROV . GRAND MASTER then delivered a long and interesting address . ( Pressure on our space compels us to hold this address over til ! our next issue . ) Bro . W . F . SMITHSON , of Leeds , the Chairman of the Charity Committee , read the report , which showed that 2000 guineas had been raised for the Queen ' s Jubilee presentations , and lhat there was a balance of ¦ £ 41 5 s . 6 d . in the bank .

Bro . W . WATSON made a statement as to the formation of a Masonic Library and Museum at Wakefield , and exhorted all Masons to do what they could to obtain contributions towards it . On the motion of Bro . the Rev . Dr . SMYTH , G . Chap , of England , a resolution was passed voting nearly £ 50 for the purchase of books , furniture , and fittings for the proposed new library .

The next business was the election of Treasurer for the province . The appointment , vvhich is held for one year , is the only office of the Provincial Grand Lodge which is in the gift of the brethren , and it may be mentioned that it is 45 years since a Wakefield Mason held the distinguished office . Bro . FOURNESS , the retiring Treasurer , proposed Bro . Henry Oxley ,

Past Master of the Wakefield Lodge , No . 495 , as Treasurer for the ensuing year . He said that Bro . Oxley was known throughout the whole province , and wherever known was esteemed , and in every way he was well qualified for the office . Bro . Fourness concluded his remarks , amidst applause , by formally proposing Bro . Oxley as his successor .

Bro . Lieut .-Col . CHARLESWORTH , J . P ., P . Prov . G . W ., asaPast Mastei of the Wakefield Lodge , seconded the nomination , and in very eulog istic terms spoke of the great services Bro . Oxley had rendered to the Craft , and alluded to the active part he took in the erection of the new Masonic Hall in Wakefield , and in raising the chief part of the funds for that

purpose . He said the appointment of Bro . Oxley would not only be an honour to that brother and to his lodge , but also to the town of Wakefield . After making some further remarks , he concluded by saying that , from his own personal knowledge of Bro . Oxley , he could speak in the highest terms of his undoubted ability , uprightness of character , and irreproachable integrity .

Bro . Col . HARTLEY , J . P ., P . P . S . G . W ., also a P . M . of the Wakefield Lodge , warmly supported the proposition , and added that the election 0 Bro . Oxley would be regarded as a great compliment to the brethren ol Wakefield . * Bro . C . L . MASON , P . P . G . Treas ., expressed , on behalf of the Leeds brethren , their hearty concurrence in the appointment , He commented on

the fact that Bro . Oxley , as Charity Steward of his lodge , had collected on behalf of the Masonic Charities upwards of ^ 400 during the last three years ; and that for the forthcoming Festival ot the Girls' School he hao secured no less than 16 Stewards from the brethren of his lod ge—the larg es number from any lodge in the province . Such a magnificent result spo K volumes for his zeal and popularity . Bro . W . H . GILL , J . P ., P . P . S . G . W ., said that he was not a mem >* J

of the same lodge as Bro . Oxley , but , as "father" of another WaKen Lodge ( Sincerity , 1019 ) , it gave him the greatest pleasure to support t nomination , and if Bro . Oxley were appointed it would be regarded w the greatest satisfaction by the brethren of his own lodge . . ¦ „ This proposition was put to the meeting and carried unanimou y > amidst enthusiastic applause . r Bro . OXLEY expressed his thanks for the hi g h and distinguished hon conferred upon him .
