generations in the Craft . The head is the great-greatgrandfather . It is said that Bro . Lord Randolph Churchill , M . P ., will shortly set out for Mashonaland , where he will make an extended tour , lasting four or five months .

' Caracos , the capital of the Republic of Venezuela , has a ¦ Masonic Temple built and furnished by the State . The President is " Protector " of the Grand Lodge . The Duke of Clarence and Avondale has concluded his visit to Mr . and Mrs . Wilson , atTranby Croft , and returned to his quarters with the 10 th Hussars at York .

Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., will be present at a meeting fo be held at the County Hall , Spring Gardens , to-day ( Friday ) , of members of local London bodies , for the purpose of considering the Metropolis Water Supply Bill .

Bro , Lord Halsbury ( Lord High Chancellor of England ) , and Bros . Lord George Hamilton and Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last , The Marquis of Lome laid the foundation-stone of ? t . Clement's Institute for Working Men at Lancaster-road , North Kensington , on Saturday afternoon last , the Bishop of Marlborough being . also present , and taking part in the proceedings .

At the annual meeting of the John O'Gaunt Lodge of Mark Masons , held at the Gainsborough Masonic Hall on Monday , the 20 th inst ., Bro . Wm . Mason , P . S . G . W ., was elected W . M ., Bro . F . Baines , Treasurer , and Bro . G . Scott , Tyler .

It was announced at a meeting on Saturday last of the Council of the Soldiers' anj Sailors' Families Association , that about £ 10 , 000 , or one half of the sum required , had been received in respect of the Serpent Fund . - Further subscriptions are earnestly requested .

The Carnarvon Memorial Church at Carlton-le-Willows , by Nottingham , which was commenced by the late Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , and completed by his widow and the Hubert family at a cost of , £ 10 , 000 , has just been consecrated by the Bishop of Southwell .

At the Dunheved Lodge , No . 7 S 9 , on Tuesday , 17 th inst ., after an ably conducted ceremony of the Third Degree , performed by the W . M ., Bro . Brenden Parsons was presented with a chaste P . M . ' s jewel , suitabl y engraved , as a mark of appreciation , by the brethren during his term of office .

In Pennsylvania they have an excellent plan of preparing officers in line of promotion for the duties of Master . The Master confers the Third Degree , the Senior Warden the Second , and the Junior Warden the First . This plan gives the lodge three active working officers , each capable of presiding .

Prince Henry of Battenberg presided at the 73 rd anniversary dinner of the German Society of Benevolence , held in the Whitehall Rooms of the Hotel Meiropole on Tuesday evening . 1 he subscriptions announced in the course of the evening amounted to about £ 2 , oco . Bro . Wilhelm Ganz , P . G . Org ., had charge of the musical arrangements .

The 12 th annual show of the Shire Horse Society was opened at the Royal Agricultural Hall , Islington , on Tuesday . The attendance was large , among those present being Mr . Henry f handos Pole-Gell , President of the Society , Bro . Lord Hoth field , President elect , and Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton .

The Princessof Walesintendsintroducinga pretty novelty in the shape of a tea-service adorned with photographs taken by her Royal Highness whilst in Scotland . It is being manufactured under the Princess ' s own superintendence , after an old Wedgwood plate , the border of which is etched in graduated lines of orange . The service will consist of 6 3 pieces , on each one of which a different photograph will be printed from her Royal Highness ' s own negatives .

The conversion of an old private banking business into a joint-stock limited company is an interesting event in the City . The change in the constitution of Messrs . Martin ' s Bank is one of these events . Few people outside of banking circles , probably , are aware of the long- period over

which this banking firm can look back . According to Mr . Hilton Price ' s " Handbook of London Bankers , " Martin ' s Bank is supposed to have been established by Sir Thomas Gresham in Queen Elizabeth ' s time , and is claimed by the firm to be the oldest in the City of London .

Bro . Lord Onslow has issued a circular to the lodges which ^ have refrained from joining the Grand Lodge of New Zealand , pointing out that it is perfectly legitimate for lodges to establish an independent Grand Lodge , and begging them to consider the matter with a view to unity . states

He , though , that it cannot be considered in lodge . In this he is wrong , because a lodge , as a lodge , can do nothing except by resolution in due form . Bro . Lord Onslow has not showed the wisdom of Lords Carnarvon and Carrington in a like case . There can be no agreement without freedom of speech . —South Australian Freemason .

The Earl of Albemarle , one of the few surviving officers who were present at the Battle of Waterloo , died on Saturday morning last , at his residence in Portman-square . The deceased was born the 13 th June , 1799 , and was thus in the 92 nd year of his age . He was present at the great battle as an ensign in the 14 th Foot , to which he had been gazetted

only a short time previously . His lordship leaves an only son—Bro . Viscount Bury , born 1832—who for some years has sat in the House of Lords as Baron Ashford and who now becomes Earl of Albemarle . There is also a younger brother of the late earl still living in the person of Bro . Sir Henry Keppel , G . C . B ., Admiral of the Fleet , who is in his 82 nd year ,

At the installation meeting of the Victoria Lodge , No . 1345 , Eccles , held on Thursday , the 19 th instant , a resolution was proposed by Bro . J . Lees , W . M ., and seconded by Bro . W . Corner , P . M ., P . G . S ., Charity Representative , that the sum of 25 guineas be contributed to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and later in the evening , on account of the indefatigable exertions of Bro . Corner , the further sum of X ' 25 was added by the brethren .

By a majority of 2257 to 1070 , the ratepayers of the extensive parish of Willesden—which includes Kilburn and Harlesden—declared themselves , on Tuesday , in favour of adopting the Public Libraries Act . The Chemical Society celebrated the jubilee of its constitution in the theatre of the London University , Burlington House , on Tuesday afternoon , and in the evening a conversazione was held at the Goldsmiths' Hall .

Bro . E . M . Milford has presented the Freemasons of Redruth , Druid Lodge of Love and Liberality , with whom he has been associated for many years , with an organ from the stock of Bro . T . A . Kistler , of Redruth . It has been determined , in consequence of the many promises of support which have been received , to present a public requisition to Bro . F . J . Horniman , of Surrey Mount , Dulwich , to stand as a candidate for the office of Sheriff of the City of London at the next election .

The Holborn Choral Society gave the inaugural concert of their seventh season at the Holborn Town Hall on Tuesday evening , the principal item in the programme being Mr . F . J . Barnett ' s cantata of "The ancient mariner . "

The Colibris Midgets , the six smallest people in the world , who created such a sensation in the French capital , and were the greatest attraction of the Paris season , have been secured by the management of the Empire Theatre , and will make their first appearance on Monday next , the 2 nd prox ., in their artistic performances .

Bro . Wellsman was installed as W . M . of the St . Dunstan ' s Lodge , No . 15 S 9 , at Anderton ' s Hotel on Wednesday . Bro . Wellsman was Master of the lodge in 1 S 77 . After the installation he initiated his son , Mr . Walter Henry Wellsman . We shall give a full report in our next .

Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress have consented to open the sale of work on March 10 th , at the Kensington Town Hall , in aid of the Mission to the French in London and Great Britain , in connection with the French Reformed Evangelical Church in Bayswater , under the Pastorate of the Rev . J . M . H . Du Pontet de la Harpe , B . D .

The Covent Garden Fancy-Dress Ball of the 17 th was such a success financially and otherwise that Bro . Augustus Harris has announced a third and final one for Wednesday next , the 4 th prox . On this occasion prizes to the amount of about £ 400 will be given for the most tasteful and original costumes . The company will be the jurors , and the form will be the plebescite of the ballot . The first prize is a diamond ornament of £ 120 . We can promise many competitors .

The Egyptian troops commanded by Colonel H . Smith , and led by British officers , inflicted a severe defeat on the dervishes led by Osman Digna , at Tokar , on the 19 th inst . The loss of the enemy is estimated at about 1000 killed , all the principal emirs , while the casualties among the Egyptians

were 6 S killed and wounded , among them being one British officer killed and one wounded . Tokar was occupied and subsequently Alafite , while Osman Digna has Hed with about 30 horsemen in attendance . Since the battle many of the Arab leaders have made their submission to the authorities .

On the withdrawal of "Monte Cnsto , and prior to his production of " 1 he Henrietta , " Mr . Henry Lee will produce at the Avenue Theatre , the new burlesque , " Md'lle Cleopatra , " by W . Sapte , jun ., musicby James M . Glover , for a series of performances commencing Monday next , the

By command of the Queen , the Prince of Wales held a Levee at St . James ' s Palace on Tuesday . His Royal Highness was escorted from Marlborough House to the Palace by a detachment of Life Guards , and was received by the Lord Chamberlain—Bro . the Earl of Lathom—and other high officers of State . The Duke of Connaught , Prince Christian , and Prince Henry of Battenberg were

Grand Lodge of the l = Ie of Man paid a visit to the Elian Vannin Lodge , which met in the Masonic Rooms , Loch Parade , Douglas , under the presidency of Bro . G . H . Quayle , W . M . The H . G . M ., Bro . Major Goldie-Taubman , was unfortunately absent in London , and the Deputy P . G . M ., Bro . T . H . Nesbitt , took his place . There was a good muster of members of the lodge and of Provincial Officers . The D . P . G . M . having taken the chair , explained

that Major Taubman was unavoidably absent ; had he been on the Island he would certainly have been with the members of the Elian Vannin Lodge that evening . These visits were desirable in every way , as they enabled the Provincial Officers to see the manner in which various lodges conducted their ceremonies , and promoted the feelings of brotherly love and harmony , which should pervade the whole Craft . —Manx Sun .

The Earl and Countess of Aberdeen have arranged to hold a concert at 27 , Grosvenor-square , on Friday March 20 , at 3 . 30 , in aid of the funds of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children .

The Italian Ambassador will open a bazaar in St . Stephen ' s Hall , Westminster , on the 9 th prox ., in aid of the Italian Benevolent Fund . The Hardwicke Lodge , which we erroneously stated in our last issue to have been consecrated last week , will not be consecrated until the iSth prox .

During the present year the number of vessels on active service in the German Navy will be increased by the addition of 37 ironclads , gunboats , and torpedo boats . The Navy on service will then consist of 9 6 vessels .

We are asked to state that the William Preston , the Great Northern , and the St . Marylebone Lodges of Instruction have united with the Queen ' s Westminster Lodge , No . 2021 , and meet on Fridays at S p . m ., at the Criterion , Piccadilly .

A large meeting of the Governors of the Derbyshire Infirmary was held on Monday afternoon , when it was decided to pull down the existing premises and erect new ones at a cost of £ 74 , 000 . A county meeting will shortl y be held to raise the necessary funds .

The Spectacle Makers' Company have placed themselves in the ranks of those City Guilds which are desirous of convincing the world that they are not so dead as they are popularly believed to be . They will accordingly hold an exhibition of optical instruments .

The Queen having instructed Lord Knutsford to convey an expression of sympathy with the injured , and the relatives of those who lost their lives at the explosion in the Springhill Colliery , Nova Scotia , Lord Stanley of Preston replies that the gracious message has been forwarded to the Mayor . It is feared that at least 120 lives were lost .

The annual general meeting of the Governors of the Cancer Hospital was held at Brompton , on Wednesday . From the annual report of the Committee , it appeared that during the past year 19 S 9 new patients were

received , 630 being in , and 1159 out-patients , whilst the total number of attendances of out-patients was 6639 , this number being in excess of any previous year . The reliable income is about £ 3000 a year less than the ordinary expenditure .

The short season of comic opera at the Lyric Opera House , Hammersmith , will be lollowed on Monday next and during the week by Boucicault's popular drama , " 1 he Shaughraun . " In the caste will be found Mr . J . Hudspeth ,

Sec , explained that under the new by-laws of the Royal Masonic Institution lor Boys

the board of Management was composed of 15 q ua" ' lied brethren elected from the London lodges and * like number representing provincial lodges . The provincial representation was so distributed that East Lancashire , » 'itn its 103 lodges , and West Lancashire , with its 105 lod ; 'e 5 i were each entitled to send a member to the Board .
