Provincial Meetings.

many parts of the country , and some from a long distance , to congratulate Bro . Sims upon the mark of distinction which had been bestowed upon him that day . Bro . Sims had before him the prospect of a very promising year of office , for they had that afternoon heard rumoured the names of three initiates and three joining members . He had always shown a generous spirit , and he was sure they

would all give him a hearty welcome . Bro . Sims , in responding , said he felt very proud of the position they had placed him in that evening , and assured them that he would do all in his power during his year of office to merit their confidence by carrying out the duties of the chair to the best of his ability . Bro . Sims also mentioned that he had received a large number of congratulatory

telegrams and letters from brethren . The' toast of "The Visitors" was proposed from the chair , and coupled with the names of Bros . George Everett and Walls . Bro . G . Everett , the Grand Treasurer elect , after complimenting the lodge upon the working of the ceremonies and the l . P . M . upon the way in which he performed the

installation , said he had to congratulate the Corinthian Lodge upon having secured such an excellent Master as Bro . Sims , who had endeared himself to all who had been brought in contact with him . Those who , like himself , had come a long distance could testify to the high esteem in which he was held . Masonry was the greatest and most striking of brotherhoods the world had ever known . A

Mason might be found in every part of the globe speaking all languages , and in every Mason might be found a brother , and in every brother a friend . Bro . Walls said although there was a wide gulf between the position—the Grand Treasurer nominateand a Past G . Warden of Middlesex—he came there with the same object as Bro . Everett , namely , to support the W . M . of

Lodge No . 120 S , whom he had known and esteemed for some years . They were told " to live and learn , " and he had certainly learnt a great deal from the way in which the ceremonies were worked in the Corinthian Lodge . He could repeat all that had been said of the Installing Officer , and the way in which the Director of Ceremonies conducted his duties was an augury that that brother had a very

• brilliant career before him in Masonry . He trusted Bro . Sims would have a prosperous year of office . Bro . E . Lukey , who proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , Bro . Burkett , " said he could safely say that never in the annals of local Freemasonry had such a magnificent installation meeting been held , and went on to compliment in very high terms the manner in which Bro .

Burkett had performed the office of _ Installing Master ; never , he said , had a Past Master ' s jewel been so richly deserved as by Bro . Burkett . Bro . Burkett briefly acknowledged the compliment . Bro . Smith proposed " The Past Masters of the Lodge " in some eloquent remarks . Out of the 25 Masters who had occupied the chair of the lodge , he said he had been present at the installation of 24 of them . Therefore he

ought to know something of the difficulties and pleasures appertaining to the office . They had had in the chair brethren whose ability had dignified the position they occupied , brethren whose generosity had afforded them memories which would live long , and brethren who had raised the tone and standard of the lodge to a position which would not suffer by comparison with any other he knew of . It was the Past Masters whose health he asked

them to drink . The toast was coupled with the name of Bro . Adamson , the founder and first Master of the lodge , who briefly replied . Bro . C Adams proposed "The Sister Lodges , Nos . 199 and 2195 , " Bros . Falconer , W . M . 199 , and Simpson , W . M . 2195 , replying on behalf of their respective lodges .

Bro . General Simpson proposed " The Masonic Chanties . " Bro . J . M . McLeod , P . S . G . W . Derbyshire , Secretary Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , replied , referring to the different Masonic Institutions , and making an eloquent appeal on behalf of the Boys' Institution , which he said was much in need of help .

ECCLES . Victoria Lodge ( No . 1345 ) . —The annual installation meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 19 th instant , at the Cross Keys Hotel . The brethren assembled early , as there was an initiation previous . Bro . Joseph Lees , W . M ., presided , and opened the lodge . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed .

The ballot was taken for Dr . Smith , and , being favourable , he was initiated , the ceremony being performed in a most impressive manner by the Worshipful Master , who also explained the working tools . Bro . Thos . McClelland , P . M ., gave the charge , which was a great treat to all who bad the advantage of being present . Bro . Hugh Rowlands , P . M ., being the Installing Master , took the chair , and

appointed Bros . Thomas McClelland , P . M ., S . W . ; Jos . Lees , VV . M . ; and Dr . Stewart , P . M ., I . G . Bro . James Bent , J . W ., VV . M . elect , was presented to the Installing Master by Bro . Ben Taylor , P . P . G . Treas ., and , after a Board of Installed Masters had been formed , Bro . Bent was duly inducted into the chair of K . S ., the working tools being explained by the Installing Master . The addresses

were delivered respectively by Bros . Dr . Stewart , P . M ., H . Heath , P . M ., and Thomas McClelland , P . M . The installation being ended , the lodge was closed by the newly-installed VV . M ., and subsequently the brethren partook of a banquet provided by the Misses Knight . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and responded to , and a handsome Past Master ' s jewel was

presented to Bro . J . Lees , P . M ., for the valuable services he had rendered to the lodge during his year of office . The following brethren were present on the occasion : — Bros . M . in February , 1 S 65 , and just 25 years after he installed his eldest son , John William , in the same chair , and now , 12 months after , he installed his second son as W . M . in the same lodge . That spoke well for the untiring efforts of Bro . Shackleton for the welfare

of the Order—and the sons had evidently caught some of the enthusiasm of the father . But he ( Bro . Marshall ) did not wonder at that , for on reading over an old minute book he found recorded many liberal and generous acts of Bro . Shackleton , illustrating some of the distinguishing characteristics of a Freemason . After a very pleasant meeting the brethren separated .
