LODGE PRUDENCE DIRECTORY , No . 20 & J , LEEDS . This is an excellent idea , carried out ably by Bro . Tudor Trevor , P . M . and Sec , and cannot fail to prove an indispensable manual for the members of this flourishing lodge , " consecrated" on November Sth , 1 SS 4 . The " Notes of Events " are very interesting , " and the table of donations and votes to the Central Masonic Charities prove that the

brethren are alive to their duties and obligations as Craftsmen . Total votes for the trio amount to 270 , and exhibit gifts to the extent of £ C IT , J 15 s . The " Register of Members " affords an insight into the Masonic tastes and proclivities of the founders and subscribers , as the

particulars include all " Masonic Degrees . " The " Founders " were ( and are ) Bros . E . Woodhouse , Rev . Dr . T . C . Smyth , C . Letch Mason , Tudor Trevor , and William Watson . All of the above have " passed the chair " in the order named . The " Directory " is also a guide for all the Grand Bodies , Craft , Arch , Mark , & c , and is literally full of information .

BERKS . The members of the Province of Berks will gladly welcome the " Masonic Register and Calendar for 1 S 93 ; " as the first issue for 1 S 92 , so ably edited by the D . Prov . G . M ., Bro . J . T . Morland . M . A ., proved such a capital and wellarranged manual . This time the name of the editor does not transpire , but the publisher ( and printer ) is the same as before , viz ., Bro . G . J . Cosburn , Newbury . It is ,

practically , edited on the same lines as the first of 1 S 92 , and contains an immense number of particulars concerning the 14 lodges , three Royal Arch chapters , four Mark lodges , and the other Masonic bodies in Berks . The list of votes for the Charities would be better still if the totals were given under each Institution . For one of the smaller provinces , Berkshire is well off to have such a valuable Masonic directory .

SUSSEX . This " Masonic Almanac " is one of the neatest and most compact of the many published in England , and the numerous tables , statistical and general , are so well arranged that there are few , if any , of the kind which contain more matter per page , and certainly it has no superior as respects needful Masonic information . Doubtless the

able reports of the Prov . Grand Secretary , Bro . V . P . Freeman , P . G . D ., have been utilised , and the result is that what is termed an "Almanac" is in reality a minature directory for the Province of Sussex , with its 27 lodges and 1313 members , and nine Royal Arch chapters and 256 companions . The printers and publishers are Messrs . Farncombe and Co ., Lewes .

EAST LANCASHIRE . This folded " Calendar " is in its 43 rd issue , and possibly is the senior publication of the kind in this country . It goes on from year to year on the same lines , and certainly in its almost "time immemorial" shape , it is not possible to give or do more , but lor such a large province ol over loo lodges , a regular directory in book form would prove a most valuable and welcome guide to the brethren .

WEST YORKSHIRE . This is another folded Calendar , & c , and " crammed full " of information . It is a wonderful compilation and a multum in parvo . There are 75 lodges represented with 3647 members ; 41 Royal Arch chapters with 12 O 0 companions ; 10 Knights Templar preceptories and 214 members ; 11 Mark lodges and 351 members ; and three Rose Croix chapters .

DomatiC Lodge ( No . 177 ) . —The festivities connected with the installation meeting of this lodge , which was held on the 13 th inst . at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , were somewhit marred by the sad news that Bro . Alfred Piper , the W . M . elect , had suffered an irreparable loss by the death of his only son , which occurred on the nth inst .

The members and visitors present were unanimous in their expressions of sympathy with liro . Piper , who was reluctantly compelled to abstain from presiding at the banquet table . M ., with a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of services rendered to the lodge , and the gift was duly acknow ' edged . On the proposition of Bro . George Everett , P . M ., Treas ., the

usual sum of 25 guineas was voted to one of the Masonic Institutions , and as the Boys' School stood next in rotation for support , the sum voted was ordered to be pi iced on the list of the W . M ., who will serve as Steward . The lodge was closed , and , after an excellent banquet , the usual toasts were given under the presidency of Bro . Ferguson , P . M . Bro . las . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . I ., who

acknowledged "The Grand Officers , " thanked Bro . Everett , P . G . Treas ., for his kindness and courtesv in permitting him the privilege of responding . In the absence of the M . W . G . Master , the other Grand Officers , notably the Pro G . M . and Deputy G . M . had important duties to perform , and how well they discharged them those who attended the last Grand Lodge meeting could judge . They regarded itasan evidence of the interest they took in the well-being and

welfare of the Crait , that no time wis too great to devote to Grand Lodge . For himself , as a Grand Officer occupying an humble position , he had to thank them for the compliment paid him in conjunction with the other Grand Officers . Bro . E . A . 'G . Smith , I . P . M ., said it was with a very sad feeling he approached the toast of " The W . M . " They had known Bro . Piper for some time , and were sure he

would render good suit and service to the lodge . He was confident it would be a source of assistance to their W . M . in his present deep distress to know the brethren sympathised with him in his absence , and , for the information of those who were unaware of the cause of that absence , he must tell them that only two days previously Bro . Piper lost his only son . Bro . W . J . Ferguson , P . M ., in replying to the toast on behalf of the W . M .., expressed the thanks of Bro . Piper

for the sympathy shown . He trusted that after a little time had passed the W . M . would be able to take the chair and discharge his duties without thinking so seriously of the calamitous event which had initiated him into the chair of the lodge . It was a sad thing for Bro . Piper to lose the greatest hope he had in life , and to be installed into the greatest hope he had in Masonry , all within the space of two days . He trusted the W . M . would have so much work to do when occupying the chair that he would never have the chance of thinking of the time when he was installed

into it . "The Masonic Charities" was next given by Bro . Ferguson , P . M . Bro . J . M . McLeod , Secretary R . M . I , for Boys , said it was a very pleasing duty to respond for the toast in this lodge , knowing as he did of what they were capable , and how generously they supported the Charities , and the valuable assistance given by the members in the management

of the Institution he represented . They were all gratified at the large amount ol support rendered to the Institutions during the past year , the total amount of £ < ju ooo having been subscribed . A large portion of that money had been invested to add to the perm inent income , and they were warranted in again coming forward to appeal for the good work . In addition to the large am Hint subscribed tothe Institutions they heard every day of increased amounts being given to

various provincial organisations , and in London in many lodges they knew of acts of Masonic Charity . All these various forms of Charity showed clearly that there was a great deal in their Order that warranted them in meeting and enjoying themselves . The W . M ., for whom he felt great sorrow , had kindly consented to act as Steward for the Bjys' School Festival . Although the management of that Institution had to thank the brethren lor liberal support

they appealed for further support , in order that it might have a funded property on an equality with the others . The Boys' Institution had no large sum of money granted to them , and he found that in 1 S 3 S a capitation grant was made for every Mason registered in the books of Grand Lodge . In 1 S 3 S the Grand Lodge commuted that sum fur £ 180 per annum . At that time there were but 400 lodges , but now , having 2000 lodges on the roll ,

the time had fairly arrived when he could appeal to Bro . Everett as one of the highest officers , and to Bro . J . Terry , who was never jealous of any other Institution , to give their attention to this matter , and sse that a proportionate amount was granted . The boys have hitherto had to leave school at 15 , but their must occasionally be one or two boys with exceptional ability , and it was therefore decided to form a superior class . It was the latest idea of progressive

education , and he hoped those brethren who could would go down to the School and see for themselves the . goid work being done . Bros . W . W . Lee , W . M . 23 S 1 ; Hire , P . P . G . S . B . Kent ; Wilks , S . D . 125 ; and Walter Martin , P . M ., responded for " The Visitors . " Bro . Jas . Stephens , P . M ., D . C , proposed "The Installing and Past Masters , " and said that whatever he lacked in

words he mide up in the earnestness of his feelings . He only regretted most deeply the circumstances which had forced the honour upon him . lie had been a member of the lodge for eight years , ; rnd from the earliest days he visited it he lound that Bro . Ferguson , P . M ., was the general utility man . On the programme it was announced that the I . P . M . was to work the installation ceremony , but that brother had had a severe bereavement of late , and was

not equal to the occasion . Bro . Ferguson was called upon suddenly , and no P . M . could have performed the ceremony in a more perfect manner . liro . W . J . Ferguson , P . M ., responded , and said he trusted he had been enabled to discharge the duties to the satisfaction of liro . Piper , W . M ., and the members . liro . 10 . White , P . M ., then gave " The Treasurer and

Secretary , " for which Bros . Geo . Fverett , P . G . Treas ., and Morris , Sec , replied . " The Officers " and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . A notice of motion was given by the Secretary for a grant to a distressed brother , and a grant of three guineas , as an honorarium to Bro . Serle , Hon . Org ., for his services during the past year . It was proposed by

Bro . Hart , I . P . M ., seconded by Bro . Davey , P . M ., and carried unanimously— "That a banquet , to which ladies may be invited , should be held on Monday , March 13 th , 1 S 93 , " that held in the spring of 1892 being a great success . The business of the lodge being ended , the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where an excellent menu was provided by the host , Bro . A . W . Clemow . After the customary loyal toasts , the W . M ., with a few

appropriate remarks , on behalf of the lodge , presented to Bro . Hart , I . P . M ., a valuable and handsome gold Past Master ' s jewel , suitably inscribed , as a recognition of the great zeal and ability displayed by Bro . Hirt in the wellruling and governing of the lodge . During the past 12 months no less than 20 initiates and two joining members had been placed on the roll of the lodge . Bro . Hart was also presented with a collar and silver Past Master's jewel ,

duly engraved , in testimony to his unequalled services . The I . P . M . tendered his thanks in eloquent terms , which elicited repeated tokens of approval from the brethren . The customary toasts , interspersed with harmony , vocal and instrumental , and the inevitable replies , brought a long but most enjoyable evening to a close , and the brethren separated all expressing a hope that the present year may prove as successful to the lodge .

The lodge having been opened , the minutes of the previous inciting were read and confirmed . A ballot was taken for the office of Treasurer in the place of Bro . B . H . Van Tromp , P . M ., who had unfortunat ; ly been compelled through ill-health to discontinue his active , able , and long service in the lodge as Treasurer . Bro . Lister , P . M ., was unanimously elected . A ballot was taken for Mr . John Orven Perry as an initiate , and duly elected . Bro . Dr . D .

M . Forbes was then presented as W . M . elect , and a Board of Installed Masters having been formed , Bro . D . M . Forbes was installed into the chair of K . S . The ceremony , with the usual addresses , was performed by Bros . J . F . Woods and G . D . Lister in an able manner . The new VV . violin . The Worshipful Master proposed "The Queen and the Craft , " which was loyally responded to . ~ The Worshipful Master then submitted"H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , the M . W . G . M . of England , who had been initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry I 25 years ago , by the King of Sweden , and joined the Grand Lorlge of lingland the following year , who has been a true and

faithful brother in maintaining and extending the principles of the Craft , and whom we hope soon to see again in Grand Lodge in the chair of K . S . I he toastof " The Pro Grand Master , Dep .
