governing meetings , would have succeeded . All their contradictory resolutions they were most anxious to re-contradict . But it was too late—according to the ruling of Mr . B . W . Findon , the chairman . This unfortunate discovery of irregularity , however , was not made until a vast amount of work had been most satisfactorily accomplished .

As already stated , Friday week ' s minutes had been condemned , which meant the committee then elected ceased to exist . A new executive consequently had to be elected , and as Mr . Hentschel , Mr . Repton , and Mr . House had resigned their respective offices , the first move was to ask these gentlemen to reconsider their decision . Mr . Hentschel said his remaining as Treasurer rested on the committee elected , as he could not conscien tiously

support men who propagated a policy which he regarded as directly dangerous to the club ' s welfare . If Mr . Hentschel withdrew , Mr . Repton would not continue as trustee , and if Mr . Hentschel declined office Mr . Percy House would not consent to stand as Secretary . The result was that all three of these important officials resigned , and with them go Messrs . Cecil Raleigh , E . F . Spence , A . Lindo , W . O . Summers , R . J . Geard , & c . And so Mr . Hentschel , with his followers and colleagues , retired from the

hard work of so many years , leaving behind them a club worked from a small coterie into a public institution . For this wonderful success no one can deny the unflagging energy , the countless hours , and , it may be added , the financial assistance , and good name , given by Mr . Hentschel to the Playgoers' Club are mainly responsible . And in that the behaviour and want of dignity displayed by the members was a serious blot on the history of the Playgoers' Club , it is not to be wondered at that many old playgoers will follow in the steps of Mr . Carl Hentschel and his colleagues .

Mr . Hentschel spoke of hearing remarks about a " one man club . " The " one man " referred to is now out of it . Let us see what will

happen . Mr . Hess is the new treasurer , Mr . Hannaford Bennett the new secretary , and Mr . Golsun the new trustee . If the club under its new guidance keeps afloat , well and good . This much is certain , with its Foundation gone , the play-going spirit will dwindle from the club . For an ill finish to a prosperous career an ill-sounding phrase should not be so much amiss , so here it is—the Playgoers' is dead !

The preliminary business in the lodge comprised the confirmation of the minutes , the adoption of the Audit Report—which showed an increased balance in hand , and the passing ot Bros . Brearley and Morton . The principal item on the agenda was then proceeded with , and Bro . Geo . Joseph Brown was installed as W . M ., the ceremony being ably carried out by Bro . Fifield , assisted by Bro . S . Rasleigh , P . M ., as D . of C . The newlv-invested officers were Bros . J . J . Fifield , l . P . M . ; F . Richmond , S . W . ; J . Oscroft . J . W . ; G . Gabb , P . M ., Treas . ; S . J . Byng , P . M ., Sec ; H . Haycraft , S . D . ; R . H . Marchbank , J . D . ; I . H . Stanley , I . G . ; C . E . Pillinger and H . Crumbleholm ' e , Stwds . ; S . Kashleigh , D . C . ; and J . Gilbert , Tyler . 1

The lodge was then closed , and a well-served banquet was followed by the usua toasts . The W . M ., in proposing " The Grand Officers , " said he had had little experience of them personally , but he knew they did a great deal for Freen , asonry in general . He had been struck by the ability displayed by them in Grand Lodge , and the great amount of time it must have taken them to reach their high positions .

Bro . H . Carman , P . G . S . B ., expressed his pleasure at responding to the toast . The Grand Officers always had the interest of the Craft at heart . Any time they devoted was given up with great cheerfulness , and they were rewarded by knowing they were not forgotten by the brethren at their festive gatherings . He wished to congratulate the W . M ., whom he had known for many years . It had been one of his greatest pleasures to see so worthy a brother installed into the chair in so excellent a manner . He was particularly gratified to hear the very satisfactory state of the lodge , and he hoped the W . M . would increase rather than diminish the substantial balance in the Treasurer's hands .

"The Health of the W . M . " was proposed by Bro . Fifield , I . P . M ., who said he had known the W . M . for some time as a good and true Mason . Bro . Brown , W . M ., was always " hail fellow , well met , " with a kindly word for all ; but what impressed them most in his personality was his straightforwardness . He always said what he meant , please or offend ; but his remarks were always kindly meant . The W . M , was a hard worker > n the lodge—in fact one of the hardest—and his perseverance had been rewarded The brethren could , therefore , heartily drink to the W . M- 's successful yearjof office and long life and prosperity .

Bro . G . J . Brown , W . M ., warmly thanked the l . P . M . and brethren . It was a very great pleasure to him to see such a large gathering and so many old friends around him—some of whom he had known for 30 years . He was proud to hold the high dlilce of W . M . lie had lost no time in gaining that office although there were several Past Masters who were junior to him in the lodge . He was gratified at the splendid balance sheet presented by the Treasurer , and hoped to leave a similar amount in hand at tie end of the year and win the compliments bestowed upon the l . P . M . that evening . H ; thanked them for the kind manner in which they had received the toast of his health .

The next toast he had phasure in submitting was that of "The l . P . M ., " which was received with satisfaction in the Burgoyne Lodge . He congratulated the l . P . M . on his splendid year of office , both as regards financial results and the beautiful manner in which the ceremonies had been conducted . Bro . Fifield must have worked very hard to have been so letter perfect , and all present would agree that the installation cereminy that evening was a treat to listen to . Hi ( the W . M . ) hid pleasure in decorating Bro . Fifield with the handsome Past Master ' s jewel which was presented "as an emblem of respect and in appreciation of valuable services , " and hoped he would be spared to them for many years to come .

Bro . J . J . Fifield , I . P . M ., in reply , said the W . M . ' s remarks were too flattering ' , but during his year he had certainly done his best . It had always been a point with him to take everything in hand in earnest and do his best to the utmost of his ability . No matler if it took a little hard study or a little spare time , they should look it in the face and do it . At the conclusion of the installation ceremony one brother remarked that it was well finished . He concluded that brother meant the termination ot his year of

office , for he was not by any means finished in respect to freemasonry . He should always strive to go forward in Masonry as the ritual taught then . O is feature or his year was an unbounded success , and that was the ladies' night . It enabled the ladies to join them at the festive board and enjoy themselves . If he had satisfied the Past Masters and brethren by his efforts he was ejuite satisfied , for he had commanded the respect of the members and he hoped to enjoy it for many years to come .

Bros . Ewington , Spice , and Butt ( Preceptor of the Burgoyne Lodge of Instruction ) answered for " The V'srtors . " "The Treasurer , Secretary , and Past Masters' " toast afforded Bros . Gibb , P . M ., Treas ., and Byng , P . M ., Sec . ( the father of the lodge ) an opportunity of further enlarging upon the very prosperous condition of the lodge , and of assuring the brethren of their continued efforts to maintain this prosperity . " The Officers " was duly honoured before the proceedings terminated .

Bro . Arthur W . Briggs directed the musical arrangements , and was assisted by Bros . H . Marchbank , W . A . Williams , Collier ( bassoon solos ) , Booker ( humorous ) , and H . Carman .

W . ; J . Oscroft . J . W . ; G .

Carman .
