An excellentbanquet followed . The E . C . presided most genially , and , in giving the various toasts , he made some very graceful remarks anent several members of the encampment , and he more than once expressed his regret that absence abroad would prevent his attending the

installation meeting in January . During the proceedings , Sir Knight Egbert Roberts delighted his hearers with his powerful vocal efforts . Sir Knight F . W . Driver shone as a reciter of his own poetic and literary effusions , and Sir Knight Rev . R . C . Fillingham was well to the fore as a humourist .

THE HAMER BENEVOLENT FUND . This admirable Charity , founded in memory of the late Bro . Hamer , held its 21 st anniversary on the 19 th inst . at the Masonic Temple , Hope-street , Liverpool , Bro . Jno . Pemberton , P . P . G . D . C , in the chair . In the report the Secretary , Bro . J . R . BOTTOMLEV , stated that though the Institution , founded for the

assistance of aged and reduced members , was 111 a fairly prosperous condition , the expenditure was fast overtaking the income , which this year had amounted to £ 500 , while the probable expenditure would be over , £ 400 . He expressed a hope that this fact would cause greater efforts on the part of all the lodges to support so deserving a Charity .

BRO . CHARLES RAWLE . Bro . Charles Rawle , whose installation as W . M . of the Cornish lodge we recorded last week , is a member of an old Cornish family and was born at Padstow in 1848 . He has followed commercial pursuits for many years in London as a member of the firm Rawle & Co ., Great St . Helens , and has always interested himself in

matters connected with his native county , having been identified with most , if not all , the Cornish gatherings ; being a V . P . of the " One and All" Cornish Club , a member of the committee organising the annual dinner , and one of the founders of the above lodge , in which he filled the duties of all the other offices before attaining the position of W . M . He had the

honour to initiate Mr . John Passmore Edwards , the Cornish philanthropist , into the Craft . Bro . Rawle was received into Freemasonry in 1877 , in the Guelph Lodge , No . 1685 , of which he is a P . M . ; was exalted into Royal Arch Masonry in the Victoria Chapter . No . 1056 , of which he is now First Principal . He was also a founder of the Guelph Chapter , No . 1685 , and now LP . Z . A founder of the St . Stephen ' s

Lodge , No . 2424 , and a member of No . I , St . Mark ' s Lodge . He has served as Steward at Festivals ot the Girls'and Benevolent Institutions . He was elected a vestryman of the parish of Lewisham , Kent , some five years since and still remains in office . In addition to this he has served as People ' s Warden of St . Mark ' s Church , Lewisham , for about 10 years , only retiring in April last . A successful year of office for the Cornish Lodge is expected .

EAST LANCASHIRE SYSTEMATIC MASONIC EDUCATIONAL AND BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

The half yearly meeting of the General Committee of this Institution was held in Freemasons' Hall , Manchester , on Friday , the igth instant . Bro . J . H . Sillitoe , presided , and was supported by Bro . J . T .

Newbold , Vice-Chairman ; W . Jaffrey , Treasurer ; J . Newton , Sec ; and nearl y 100 representatives of lodges . After reading the minutes of the previous half yearly meeting and the various meetings of the Sub-Committees , the Committee proceeded to adopt candidates for election upon the educational funds . There were three

applicants , who were all adopted , elected , and referred to the Educational Board . The Committee then took into consideration the applications of two brethren , to be placed upon the Annuity Fund . One was elected , and the other referred to the Relief Board .

A notice of motion by Bro . C . D . Cheetham , " That a Festival be held next year , " was unanimously carried , and the Relief Board were appointed a Committee to make the necessary arrangements . At the conclusion of the general meeting , the Education Board was formed , and granted to the three children referred to them £ 12 , £ 12 , and £ 8 per annum respectively .

The Relief Board afterwards held their meeting , and out of the four applications made to them three were considered , and sums of , £ 20 , . £ 20 , and . £ 15 were respectively granted ; the fourth application was adjourned in consequence of the non-attendance of the lodge representative . A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings .

The Oldest Freemason In Suffolk.

THE OLDEST FREEMASON IN SUFFOLK .

On Monday night , the Sth inst ., a capital portrait , handsomely framed , of Bro . Major Allez , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., was presented to the Lowestoft Lodge St , Margaret , No . 1452 , by the brethren . At the same

time a superbly-illuminated address on vellum , in the form of an album , prefixed by a portrait , was presented to Bro . Major Allez himself . The date was aptly chosen , for it was the 86 rh birthday of the brother whom the brethren had met to honour as their first

W . M . Bro . j . W . Brooke , the W . M ., was in the clfair , and there was a good muster of brethren present , including many from the sister lodge , Unity . Bro . Dr . F . W . CLARK asked the W . M . to accep t the portrait on behalf of the lodge and to place it on

the walls ; and also to present Bro . Allez with the album containing a replica of the portrait and an address signed by all the members , as a token of their great esteem and admiration for his distinguished services and lifelong devotion to the cause of Freemasonry , for he had been a member of the Craft for

66 years . In Major Allez they had a fitting illustration of that perfect ashlar which , smooth and perfect , represented the mind of that man in the decline of years who had exhibited the distinguishing characteristics of Freemasonry , of which Charity was the chief . They all hoped that Major Allez would yet be spared

for many years , and the picture would serve to remind those of after generations of a bright example in Masonry . The WORSHIPFUL MASTF . R then made the presentation , with the heartiest congratulations to their honoured guest . The inscription in the album was as follows , and to it were appended the autographs of

all the members : " Lodge St . Margaret , No . 1452 . Presented to Bro . Major P . Allez , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., ' The Father of the Lodge , ' with a life-sized coloured permanent portrait to hang in the lodge-room , on the occasion of his 86 th birthday , and as a small token of the great esteem and regard in which he is held by all the brethren of this lodge . "

Bro . Major ALLEZ had some difficult y in replying to the warm tokens of esteem which were manifested by the whole lodge , but he found words at length to make an excellent speech . He said : I thank you very much for the great compliment , indeed I may say the great honour , you have been pleased to confer upon me by

placing my portrait on the walls of the lodge , for whatever the duties which may devolve upon us , we are amply repaid when those duties have been appreciated and approved of by those who are supposed to be the best qualified to testify to their merits or demerits . I assure you , brethren , that it grieves me much that ,

owing to age and physical ailments , I am prevented from being more frequently amongst you . I have during a long life devoted much time in studying the principles of this greatest , most ancient , and most unselfish of all charitable institutions , founded as it is on brotherly love , charity , and truth—an institution that

has comforted the afflicted , dried the tears of the widows and orphans , and is the parent of many an institution for benevolent purposes . Brethren , it is to me a source of— I trust pardonable—pride that I have my name inserted in your charter as the first W . M . of your lodge , and it is with the greatest pleasure that I can

affirm that my successors in the chair , down to the present W . M ., have discharged with great ability , zeal , and brotherly feeling the onerous and responsible duties attached to so ancient , so honourable , and eminent a position . It is now 66 years since I first joined the Craft at Halifax , Nova Scotia , under the

Grand Lodge of Ireland , and I joined the Grand Lodge of England at Halesworth , as a member of Lodge Prudence , in 1846 . The gallant Major concluded by wishing the brethren all happiness here and hereafter The company afterwards sat down to supper at the Royal Hotel , where Lodge St . Margaret is now held ,

and the usual Masonic toasts were honoured . " The Health of Major Allez " was proposed , and both the W . M . and Bro , Dr . H . B . Walker bore testimony to his worth . In the course of the evening also Bro . W . J . Roberts , the Secretary of the Lodge , was congratulated on the provincial rank he recently received .
