M ., on

behalf of St . Mark ' s Lodge , he had an extremely pleasant duty to perform , viz ., the presentation of a P . M . ' s jewel to Bro . G . M . Gardener for his past services . They were all aware of the disinterested and able manner in which Bro . Gardener had performed his duties as W . lVl ., and he was pleased to say Bro . Gardener had gained the goodwill and confidence of the members of the lodge .

Bro . Gardener , in reply , said he was taken by surprise at so handsome a recognition of his services , and trusted the brethren would excuse any failing on his part to fully express what he felt . He could only sincerely thank them for their kindness . He had always endeavoured to fulfil his duties conscientiously and to the best of his ability , and it made him proud to think that the brethren were so

thoroughly satisfied . The jewel was of gold and handsomely designed . Votes of thanks were passed to the D . G . M . and the Officers of the Grand Lodge , as well as to Bros . K . Wilson and Dr . Gardener , whose skill in this respect is so well known , far and away excelling any of his previous efforts , the emblems of the CraSt , white and coloured curtains , flags , & c , being mixed and blended in

such a manner that everyone present expressed their warmest admiration . The couches and chairs gave the hall the appearance of a vast drawing room , and with the superb regalia of the Masons and the varied tints of the ladies' dresses realised a scene not easily forgotten . The Masonic mottoes " Brotherly Love , " " Relief and Truth , " also " We meet on the level and part on the square , " and

Long live our noble Queen , " being composed of white letters on a dark ground , appeared very prominent and greatly added to the general effect ; a trophy of flags , with her Majesty's portrait , forming the centre piece , had a most pleasing effect . The Prince of Wales ' s portrait was also placed in a prominent posilion . Upon the arrival of

the D . G . M ., the Masons formed two lines in the centre of the room , between which he was conducted to his seat by the D . G . Officers . Dancing was then commenced with much spirit , and continued until the wee sma' hours . The music provided by Messrs . Bro . D . G . Johnson and Bro . N . Grace , in their capacity of M . C . ' s , gave universal satisfaction , and it was apparent to all that the committee , consisting of Bros . Obituary.

Obituary .

BRO . JOHN WALKER , P . M ,, No . 3 S 7 . The language used , p . nS of "Yorkshire Lodges , " might have been prophetic , for already three of the five veterans therein referred to have passed away ! Bro . John Walker , P . M ., 3 S 7 , was initiated in the Airedale Lodge , then 814 , May 6 th , 1827 . He was W . M : of that lodge in 1 S 30 , also in 1 S 32 , and again in 1840 . Before that he rilied

the various inferior offices , and notably distinguished himself as its first Secretary . At his installation , December 24 thj 1829 , he was the first W . M . to appoint the late Bro . Wainman Holmes as Secretary . The latter was the fifth , and the former the first of the old Past Masters , Bro . Riley referred to . During his time , Bro . Walker was an active worker and preceptor . More than once he proved his

Masonic loyalty , and was a mainstay of his mother lod ge . To the close of his long life he had a sincere veneration for , and attachment to , our Ancient Craft . We were dissappointed to see so few Masons at our venerable brother ' s funeral , but it should be remembered that very few of the present members of either Lodges Nos . 3 S 7 or 1545 were personally acquainted

with the deceased . Those who were present , however , did honour to his obsequies , and we were especially gratified to meet Bro . Wm . Ellison , who , 50 years ago—1837-8 —was Secretary of 387 , and knew him well . There were also present , and followed his remains to the grave , Bros . Chas . Howroyd , P . M . and Charity Steward 387 ; John Hey , P . M . and Treas . 3 S 7 ; J . Ramsden Riley , P . M .,

3 S 7 , P . P . G . D . C . West Yorks ; Thos . M . Holmes , P . M . 1545 , Prov . G . S . B . West Yorks ; William Turner , P . M . 3 8 7 and 1545 ; and R . Bell , P . M . 1545 . The presence oi such brethren sufficiently testified to the high esteem in which our late brother was held . Bro . John Walker was in his 85 th year , and trie interment took place on the 23 rd inst ., at Baildon Church .

The Craft Abroad.

The Craft Abroad .

Bro . Sir William Clarke , Bart ., R . W . District and Provincial Grand Master of Victoria , recently presented to the city of Ballarat a plot of land on which to erect an art gallery . The question of laying the foundation stone with Masonic honours was taken into consideration by the trustees , who invited Sir William Clarke to perform trie

ceremony . Subsequently it transpired that a ceremony of the kind might not be in accordance --nth the religious scruples of many subscribers to the art gallery . In order to avoid such a cause of offence Sir William Clarke at once abandoned the idea of a Masonic ceremony . Alluding to the subject at the installation festival of the St . John's

Lodge , No . 427 . ( I . C ) , Ballarat , during the first week in June , he remarked that he would officiate on the occasion in a private capacity . Masons , he said , were frequently asked to assist in laying foundation stones of public buildings , and did so , but only with the full concurrence of those concerned . An esteemed friend of his had informed

him that from conscientious scruples a large number of subscribers to the fine art gallery would have to remain away if the stone was laid with Masonic honours . The Masons were a peace-loving body , and in deference to the feelings of the subscribers mentioned , and in order not to injure the prospects of the gallery , he had decided not to officiate at . the ceremony as a representative of the

fraternity . In the city of Ballarat , a town of over 30 , 000 inhabitants , which boasts of many fine public edifices , as well as a statue of Bro . Robert Burns , it may be added there are four Craft Lodges ( two under the English and one each under the Irish and Scottish Constitutions ) , and a Royal Arch Chapter , in connection with the oldest English Lodge ( the Tarrowee , No . 713 ) . A Mark Lodge will also be shortly opened .

M ., on

behalf of St .

Lundqvist , Keisenberg , Bentley , and Papworth was perfect , and everyone seemed delighted .

Bro . D .
