Analysis Of The Returns.

ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .

It will have been gathered from our account of the Festival that , though the sum raised for our Masonic Boys' School is undoubtedly large by comparison with the sums raised at the anniversaries of non-Masonic Institutions , it is very much below the average we have been accustomed to during the last few years in our own Society . Of course we cannot expect that every brilliant success will be surpassed by one still more brilliant , or , for the matter

of that that it will be equalled . We must take the minor with the major totals , and leave grumbling to those who find it a congenial occupation . It is unfortunate , however , that a minor total should have come at the present time just when , having regard to the contemplated increase in the strength of the School , a result in excess of the average was so sorely needed . VVe have recently pointed out that a mere repetition of last year ' s work would

help the executive to carry on the work of the Institution , but leave little , if any , margin towards any further responsibilities . VVe have also explained that a falling off from the 1 SS 4 returns might have the effect of hampering the plans ot the House and General Committees . Yet the story of last year ' s Festival was not repealed on \ Ved 11 esda 3 ' . The sum announced by Bro . Binckes , even if we add to it the £ 1000 voted by Grand Lodge towards

furniture and fittings for the Preparatory School , was short of his announcement in June , 1884 , by , in round figures , some £ 1300 , the subscriptions and donations obtained by the 275 Stewards amounting to no more than £ 11 , 748 9 s . od ., whereas in 1 S 8 4 he just managed to clear £ 14 , 000 . vVe shall not attempt to account for this serious falling of . lt is enough that it has occurred , and the question which will anxiously engage

the attention of the Executive during the interval between now and the October election will be , whether or not it will be justified , in the teeth of so momentous a decrease , in admitting any additional boys to the benefits of the School . By October , or very shortly afler , thc premises will be ready for their reception , but if there are not thc necessary funds for their

education and maintenance , it will be clearly impossible to elect them . However , this is a matter which must be left to the authorities to determine . Our present task is to run through the Returns carefully , as they are presented to our readers elsewhere , and to this end we shall observe the usual classification , as in previous analyses .

VVe have said that the actual sum raised by the 275 Stewards was £ 11 , 748 gs . od ., the further contribution of £ 1000 , voted by Grand Lodge , lor the special purposes of the Preparatory School , increasing the total to £ 12 , 748 9 s . od .. Last year the Board of Stewards mustered 290 , and the total of their lists exceeded £ 14 , , so that in the way of collection by the ordinary Festival processes the event of VVednesday was less productive than the corresponding event of last year by about £ 2300 . In the course of the description that follows it will be seen how , if not why , this decrease has

. As usual , we sub-divide the Board into London and Provincial sections , kc . Dealing with thc former we find that LONDON , With its 119 Stewards , contributed only £ 5092 17 s ., there being not only fewer brethren acting on its behalf than at previous Festivals , but likewise

a most serious reduction in the number of represented lodges . Our experience justifies us in expecting that , taking one Festival with another , about one-third of the lodges in the metropolitan district send up Stewards , and if only it were a different third which gave its services at each different Festival , it is obvious that no better arrangement could be adopted . Unfortunately , while several lodges make a point of being represented

at all the Festivals , and a very much larger number voluntarily g their services on occasions when they might justly claim a respite , there are over 60 lodges , or about one-fifth of the whole number , which are uniformly absent . As a matter of fact , Bro . Binckes was able to enlist the services of brethren acting on behalf of only about oiiefourth of the London total , and a very large number of these were unable to return lists of large amounts . Nor was there any compensation for the

latter failure in the three-figure lists , which , on the contrary , were below the average both as regards number and thc amounts they returned . Lhe distinction of heading the list was secured for the third consecutive time by Mrs . D . P . Cama , who acted with her husband for the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge , No . 1642 , and raised £ 220 : os ., Bro . Cama ' s list being a modest , but serviceable , £ 10 ios . Bro . William Roebuck , P . G . Std ., one of the newly-elected Trustees , was Steward for the Committee Dinner Club , his listi
