WOOLWICH . —Excelsior Lodge ( No . 226 ) . — The installation meeting of the above prosperous lodge took place on Friday , the 19 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , William-street , when Bro . C F . Matier , P . G . W ., G . Asst . Sec . Eng ., and P . D . P . G . M . Middx ., & c , in his own unsurpassed style placed Bro . G . Spinks , P . P . G . A . D . C . Kent , S . W ., and W . M . elect , in the chair of A . The lodge was
opened by Bro . A . Penfold , P . M ., P . P . G . M . O . Kent , who , owing to the untimely death of Bro . Holleyman , late W . Master , presided . Bros . Matier and W . B . Williamson , the latter a G . Steward of England , were received and saluted with the honours of five . Bro . W . Akers , S . W ., W . M . elect 13 , having successfully passed the ballot , was then advanced with the full ceremony . Bro . Matier then

As most of them were aware , he had the honour of consecrating the lodge , and since then had watched its career with

great interest . That made the 3 65 th brother he had installed , so that he had installed as many Masters as there were days in the year , and if anything could make him feel proud , it was that fact . He again thanked them for their cordial vote of thanks . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to Bro . Capon ' s Hotel , the Chatham Arms , where a pretty little banquet awaited them . Among the other brethren
present were Bros . Col . E . S . Gordon , R . A ., P . M . 44 , and P . P . G . S . O . Kent ; Capt . Eugene Sweny , P . M . 44 , P . G . J . W . Kent ; E . West , P . M . ; C H . Canning , H . Bonner , and H . Kerridge . 1 he toasts of " The Queen and Mark Masonry " and " His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , P . G . M ., " were drunk heartily ; and the toast of "Lord Kintore , G . M . ; Lord Kgerton of Tatton , D . G . M . ; and the rest of the Grand Officers " was coupled with the name of Bro . Williamson ,
who thanked the brethren for the honour done him , and also for the hearty reception of the toast ; and , in return , wished the lodge every prosperity . He felt certain that if the senior Grand Officers had been present they would have been pleased with the brethren , and with the work . The day previous he had the honour of being present at Cambridge and seeing Prince Albert Victor advanced to the Mark Degree in the Isaac Newton University Mark Lodge .
It was a red-letter day in the history of the Degree to have their future King enrolled in their ranks , and he felt sure their exalted brother would , like his honoured sire , make his mark in Masonry . With reference to the Excelsior Lodge , he felt attached to it , more especially on account of it being at VVoolwich , where he had made , and still enjoyed , such lasting friendships . There he had worked hard to gain not only a mechanical and practical knowledge of gunnery , but
also the technical knowledge necessary for the command he held in the Artillery Volunteers , and he hoped with success . He trusted tohave the privilege of visiting them again , and concluded by wishing the Master a prosperous year of office . " The Health of Bro . the Rev . T . Robinson , M . A ., G . M . M . Kent , " followed , and the VV . M . read a letter from that distinguished brother regretting his inability to attend
through illness . The D . G . M . and Officers were also honoured . Bro . Coupland then , in eloquent terms , proposed " The Health ofthe W . M ., " and in so doing reviewed Bro . Spinks' Masonic career in the district , and of his military services at the Cape of Good Hope and Natal during the late war , and said how proud they were to see him resume his place in the lodge , of which he was one of the founders .
Bro . Spinks was the oldest Mark Mason present , for he had been a Mark man for the last 25 years . He asked them to drink the toast heartily . Bro . Spinks , in response , said it was quite true that he had been 25 years a Mark Master Mason , but had not got bald headed by letting people walk over his head . He trusted the lodge would prosper , and that that night might be the smallest gathering they would ever have . They
must assist him , for there was Bro . Hayes to follow him , and he wanted to do something worthy of being followed by such a good and popular Mason ; if they did that , nothing should be wanting on his part to make the lodge worthy of its name and prestige in the Province of Kent . The Chairman then gave the toast of " The Installing Officer , " and said they were favoured by Bro . Matier ' s presence and assistance . The eloquent and impressive
manner in which that brother had carried out the ceremony needed no eulogy from him ; it spoke for itself , and for it he asked them to give him a real " Kentish fire . " Bro . Matier , in returning thanks , said he was especially gratified at the opportunity afforded him of installing so worthy a Master , and anything he could do for the lodge he would only be too happy to do . There was now a matter he should like to bring belore the lodge , a matter
that was generally , and , indeed , especially , the care of his chief , Bro . Binckes , and in liis ' presence he ( Bro . Matier ) would not attempt to broach it , and that matter was the Mark Benevolent Fund . They had lost jfSoo through the failure of their bankers , but he was not appealing merely on that account , but they wanted funds , and must make up the loss thereby incurred by the increased efforts and Charity of the brethren . Bro . Weston had again kindly
consented to stand Steward at the forthcoming Festival , and would himself ask them to subscribe to his list in his own persuasive manner . To that good brother ' s appeal he would add to those who were about to give 2 s . fid . give 3 s ., to those who thought of giving 5 s . make it ios ., and to those who meant to give one guinea , he would say " give five , " for absolutely one guinea was wasted , whereas five gave a Life Governorship . The fund was applied
principally to the education of children at home , where they have the care and supervision of their parents or friends , but at the next General Board Meeting a scheme would be brought before it to give a poor Mark Master Mason , or his widow , an annuity , and while they never could expect to equal the grand Charity of the Craft , yet they could do their best , and by so doing unite in the grand Masonic design of being happy and communicating happiness to
others . Bros . Col , Gordon and Ritchie responded for "The Visitors , " and Bro . Akers neatly to the toast of his health . An especial toast was given for Bro . Penfold , and Bro . Coupland highly eulogised the handsome manner in which that brother had carried out the duties of the chair since
the death of Bro . Hollyman . The other toasts were " The Masonic Press , " for which Bro . J olly responded , and " The Officers , " for whom Bro . Hayes responded . The Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . Wa are pleased to add that the sum of , £ 30 was subscribed to Bro . Weston ' s list , which will , no doubt , be increased before the coming Festival .
Freemasonry at Falmouth is at present showing signs of a healthy vitality . Until now the Freemasons of that place have had their hall in the Royal Hotel , but of recent years the Craft has made such progress in Falmouth that the brethren have finally decided to build a new and more commodious hall . A site presented itself at the rear
of the new Savings Bank , and this having been secured , final arrangements for a new Masonic building have been made . The foundation stone will be laid on July 2 nd by Sir Charles Graves-Sawle , Bart ., W . D . P . G . M ., with suitable ceremony . When completed the new hall will be of spacious dimensions , and will rank as one of the finest in the county .

Matier , P . G . W ., G . Asst . Sec . Eng ., and P . D . P . G . M . Middx ., & c , in his own unsurpassed style placed Bro . G . Spinks , P . P . G . A . D . C . Kent , S . W ., and W .
