The second Summer Outing and Ladies Day was announced to take place on the 23 rd prox ., at thc Crown Gardens , Broxbourne , and the lodge may be congratulated upon having a good Board of Stewards , and upon securing the services of Bro . S . G . Bonner to act as Hon Secretary to this important , and wc trust , annual festival . The profits of which are again to be devoted to Masonic Charities .

and confirmed , Mr . W . J . Ball was duly elected and nitiated . The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with , and Bro W . H . Lee , Prov . Asst . G . Sec , W . M . elect , was presented for installation and duly installed as W . M . for tbe ensuing year by Bro . Osborn . The newly-installed W . M . appointed and invested the following officers : Bros . E . Woodman , S . W . : J . Weston , J . W . ; W . Hurran , Treas . ; J . Osborn , Sec ; H . J .

Osborn , S . D . ; O . J . Von Holtorp , j . D . ; J . H . Gaskin , I . G . ; VV . Wright , D . C ; f . Bayne , ' Org . ; E . W . . Wayne and W . R . Stephens , Stwds . ; and J . Very , Tyler . The usual addresses were then delivered in a very able manner by the Installing Alaster . The sum of two guineas was voted to the " Henry Levander Memorial Fund . " Several propositions were received , after which the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent

banquet , catered for by Bro . Lewis Cole . After tbe usual preliminary toasts had been given , the W . M . proposed " The Health of the Grand Officers , " and alluded in complimentary terms to Bro . Thrupp , Deputy Prov . G . M ., who had proved himself a very zealous and efficient Mason , and a great acquisition to the Province of Middlesex . The W . M . also alluded to the recent retirement of Bro . Buss , who carried with him the best wishes

of the Craft in general and of the Province of Middlesex in particular . He , the VV . M ., hoped that Bro . Buss would still continue to come occasionally amongst them , and that he would live for many years to enjoy that repose to which he was so justly entitled . Bro . Raymond Thrupp , Deputy Prov . G . M ., in reply , assured the brethren that the Grand Officers appreciated the kind reception they always met with , and thanked them

for the hearty manner in which they had received the toast . It was a pleasure to him to see the admirable manner in which the work was carried out , and it was no fulsome praise to Bro . Osborn , the I . P . M ., when he said that he had never seen the ceremony of installation done better . He was very glad he had recommended Bro . Osborn's name for provincial honours , and congratulated him on his recent appointment as Prov . G . Std . Bearer . He visited

the Iodge not only to enjoy the hospitality , but to see the working , so that the right men might be appointed' to the right places in the Provincial Grand Lodge . Bro . H . G . Buss , Past Asst . G . Sec , also responded , and said he fully endorsed all Bro . Thrupp ' s remarks , as there was nothing possible for him to say but approval of the unanimity and concord with which the Citadel Lodge is worked . It would be egotism on his part to think he

deserved all that the W . M . had said of him , but it was very gratifying to him to hear Bro . Lee make those remarks , as he had worked with him for so many years . Nothing had given him greater pleasure than to do all he Could to promote the welfare of the province . The W . M . next gave " The Provincial Grand Officers , " and said he could say nothing of Bro . Sir Francis Burdett but what all the brethren knew . During the many years

that he had been P . G . M . he had performed his onerous duties to the unbounded satisfaction of the brethren . He was the consecrating officer of this lodge , and had frequently visited il , and he ( the VV . M . ) was very grieved to receive a letter from Sir Francis stating that he was unable to be present . It was with great pleasure that he introduced Bro . Woodward , Prov . G . Sec ., who had done such a va t amount of work during the last few months . Owing

to the lamentable death of Bro . Levander , the secretarial work of the province was in chaos when Bro . Woodward was appointed , and it was to his untiring energy and zeal that the heavy duties were discharged to the satisfaction of the Craft . He had received every kindness and courtesy from him , and he took it as a personal compliment that he had been good enough to visit them that evening . Bro . Woodward , P . G . Secretary , responded , and said

that it was with great pleasure and great diffidence that he had to return thanks for the hearty reception he had met with in the province , and the Citadel Lodge in particular . He feared the W . M . had spoken of him in too flattering terms ; but he was certain he could not have brought the provincial work into so satisfactory a state but for the able assistance that Bro . Lee had afforded him . He felt that in following Bro . Levander he was following a Mason of very

great experience , but was sure that if he followed in his Steps to the best of his ability , he should give satisfaction . Bro . Lovegrove , P . P . G . S . W ., also responded , and said that it was his privilege to be present at the consecration , and he was very pleased to see the lodge progress so satisfactorily . The toast of " The Worshipful Mastcr " was then proposed by Bro . Osborn , I . P . M ., who said he considered it an

honour to be able to propose the health of a Mason who had done so much to further the progress of the Craft , and who was , moreover , so old and valued a friend ot his own . Bro . Lee was one of his first tutors and Preceptors in Freemasonry , and he congratulated the lodge on the careful and proper selection it had made . He was quite

satisfied as to the prosperity of the lodge and the comfort of the brethren during the ensuing year . Bro . Lee , in reply , thanked Bro . Osborn for the complimentary terms in which he had spoken of him , and thc brethren for the enthusiastic reception they had accorded the toast of his health . They could rely upon his dping- his

best to promote the welfare of the lodge . Tho next toast that he had to bring to their notice was that of "The Health of the I . P . M . " He had been associated with Bro . Osborn for a number of years , and during that time had worked side by side with him in Freemasonry . He united in himself all those qualities that make a good man and a good Mason , and was always ready to stretch out the right hand of good fellowship . It was therefore a very great

pleasure to him to invest him with the Past Master ' s jewel , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , London , which had been unanimously voted him on the last occasion , and he sincerely hoped he might be spared for many years to wear it , and to assist the lodge with his advice as a Past Master . Bro . Osborn , I . P . M ., cordially thanked the W . M . for the flattering terms in which he had alluded to him , and also the lodge for the handsome jewel they had presented him

with . He also thanked the D . P . G . M . for his kind opinion of the working , and assured him he was only trying to emulate those who had gone before . The toast of " The Initiate " having been proposed , and responded toby Bro . Ball , theW . M . gave "The Visitors , " and said that this toast was always received with cordiality by the Citadel Lodge . They were usuall y fortunate in having a large number of visitors , but on this occasion the number was smaller than usual on account of the counter

attraction at the Bovs School . Bro . Payne , W . M . 1524 , sincerely thanked the brethren for the hospitality the visitors had received , and testified to the efficient and able working of the lodge . Bros . Noble and Forge also returned thanks . The toast of " Thc Masonic Charities " was next given by thaW . M ., ' and met with a hearty reception . He said that there were several brethren present who had served

Stewardships at one or more of the Institutions , but he hoped that those brethren who had not would do so at some future time , and he earnestly commended it to the notice of the younger Masons . Bro . Woodman , S . W ., replied , and said it was a pleasure to him to see the fervent and Masonic manner in which the toast had been received . He was a Steward at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys on the following VVednesday , and was sure that the excellent qualities of

that Institution would appeal to the hearts of all the brethren present . The toast of "The Officers" having been given , and responded to , "The Tyler's" toast brought a verypleasant evening to a close . The musical arrangements , which were under the direction of Bro . Bayne , Organist , were of a first class character , and considerably enhanced the enjoyment of the evening , the principal vocalists being Bros . Bayne , Hibberd , W . W . Lee , Woodman , and others .

LUTON . —St . John the Baptist Lodge ( No . 475 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Town Hall , on Friday , the 12 th inst ., when there was a good muster of brethren present . Among the visitors were Bros . Philip Deedes , W . M . 1479 ; S . Kilpin , S . W . 540 ; S . Spokes , W . M . 1470 ; H . Rose , J . VV . 1470 ; Jas . Shilcock , P . M . 449 ; John S . Cumberland , P . M . i 6 n , P . P . G . J . W . North and East Yorkshire ; E . C . Knight , P . M .

94 S ; M . Coliings , S . D . 1470 ; J . H . Miller , D . C . 22 S ; and others . The lodge having been dul y opened and the minutes read , the W . M . enquired if anything further had been heard respecting the province for Bedfordshire . The Secretary , Bro . Gladwell , said that he had received a letter from the Grand Secretary stating that the petition was now before the Grand Master , and he hoped shortly to be able to let

them know the result , but he had little doubt that it would be granted . Bro . Gladwell said he had nothing to add beyond what had been previously communicated to them , but he hoped before they met again all the Bedfordshire Lodges would be summoned to assemble under the Constitution of a Provincial Grand Lodge . The minutes having been confirmed , Bro . Alfred Ewen , S . VV ., was presented by Bro . E . A . Cumberland , P . M ., as W . M . elect , to receive

the benefit of installation . The ceremony was performed by the VV . 1 VJ ., Bro . F . J . Brown , assisted by Bro . W . C . Hasegrove , in a very able manner . The following were the officers invested for the ensuing year : Bro . Richard Chantley , S . VV . ; F . W . Ewen , J . VV . ; E . A . Cumberland , P . M ., Treas . ; J . Gladwell , Sec , P . M . 1470 ; H . Cumberland , S . D . ; F . E . Percival , J . D . ; Thos . Hallis , I . G . ; and Charles Weston , Tyler . Bro . Alfred Atkins , P . M .,

delivered the addresses to the W . M ., Wardens , and brethren in a very impressive manner , amidst the most profound silence of all present , after which the newly-installed Master presented a Past Master ' s jewel , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , London , to the I . P . M . in felicitous terms , which was suitably acknowledged , and no other business arising for consideration the lodge was closed according to ancient custom , and the brethren adjourned to

the banquet , at the George Hotel , provided by Bro . Fred . Coleman in his usual recherche style . In the course of the evening the usual Royal and other toasts were given and honoured according to Masonic usage , Bro . Alfred Ewen , W . M ., presiding and conducting the assembly with such ability and geniality that the brethren may fairly look forward to a most agreeable and prosperous year . Songs , speeches , and good fare

rendered the evening very enjoyable . In response to " The Health of the Visitors , " Bro . Cumberland , P . M ., P . P . G . J . W ., and Bro . Deedes , W . M . 1479 , spoke in complimentary terms of the work done in lodge , the generous hospitality of Freemasons in general , and of this lodge in particular , and exhorted the brethren to cultivate that great Masonic virtue Charity , and congratulated them on their awakening to the aspiration of

forming Bedfordshire into a Masonic province , which would enable them collectively to perform nobler deeds of Charity , cement more closely the bonds of unity , exalt the prestige of the Craft , and elevate the status of Bedfordshire Masons by the inherent power to confer provincial honours upon the most worthy members of the Fraternity . Upon thc toast of "The Officers of the Lodge " being proposed , and coupled as usual with the names of the two

Wardens , the W . M . said that on this occasion he wished to add the name of their esteemed Secretary , Bro . Gladwell , to whom they were indebted more than to any other brother for the interest and trouble he had taken by correspondence and other ways in promoting and bringing to a successful issue the question of a Provincial Grand Lodge for Bedfordshire , and he wished to express his sincere thanks to him for having again accepted the office of Secretary , as he was sure , by past experience , that during his year as W . M . in any of his arduous and

difficult duties he could always rely upon obtaining good advice and valuable assistance from Bro . Gladwell whenever he might require it . The toast was duly honoured , and acknowledged by the Senior Warden , Bro . Chantler ; the Junior Warden , Bro . Frank Ewen ; and also by the Secretary , Bro . J . Gladwell , who said that he was so much surprised by the honour of

having his name associated thus with this toast , that he felt unable to collect his thoughts to reply as he should wish ; but it was evident he was expected to say something respecting the anticipated Province of Bedfordshire ; but he had from time to time kept the brethren so fully informed of what had been done , that he had nothing new to communicate . They were simply waiting for an answer to their

petition to the Grand Master , and the practical development of their hopes . He could- not tell what might be causing the delay ; but from the Grand Secretary ' s letter , which he had read in lodge , he 'entertained no doubt that before the expiration of the W . M . ' s year some of the

brethren present would be serving as Provincial Grand Officers under a Provincial Grand Master . This he sincerely hoped , as he was quite sure that the best interests of Freemasonry would flourish , and their noble Charities would benefit more under the stimulus of provincial agencies and influence than they had ever done in the past .

WORKINGTON . —Sun and Sector Lodge ( No . 9 62 ) . —The annual installation meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 17 th inst ., for the purpose of installing Bro . J . C . Paterson with an oi ! painting of himself , to hang in the lodge room , for the

very able and energetic way he had discharged the duties of the chair during his year of office . Bro . Paterson feelingly replied , and thanked Bro . Wood and the members of the lodge for their great and unexpected kindness , and he should ever look back with pleasure upon the year that he was VV . M . of the Sun and Sector Lodge . The portrait is admitted to be a work of art , and was

executed by the well-known firm , Messrs . Reay and Son , of Whitehaven and St . Bees . It was then moved and passed that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs . Gibson , widow of the late and much respected Bro . W . B . Gibson , who was first W . M . of this lodge , and with the assistance of Bro . Kenworthy had discharged the duties of the installations for

about a quarter of a century . With a unanimous vote of thanks to Bros . Paterson and Kenworthy . for their services as Installing Masters , and hearty good wishes from ten lodges and Prov . Grand Lodge , the lodge was closed in due form , and the usual banquet followed , when , at the newly installed Master ' s invitation , upwards of a hundred sat down , and a pleasant evening followed .

that he had been P . G . M . he had performed his onerous duties to the unbounded satisfaction of the brethren .
