To every one he \ v * mld tender his heartfelt thanks for the beautiful jewel which then for the first time adorned his breast . " Farewell , a long farewell to alljny greatness . " The J . VV . proposed "The Past Masters , " which was responded to by the father of the Iodge , Bro . Alexander Levy , and Bro . Rosenfeld . After the other toasts were honoured , the brethren separated .

Dyson , and many other distinguished brethren . The

whole of the ceremony was worked by Bro . Marshall , P . G . Std . Br ., in a most finished and impressive manner . This was emphasised by the D . P . G . M ., who , at the request of the W . M ., presented to Bro . Marshall the Past Master ' s jewel voted by the lodge as a memento of a most successful year of office . The W . M . then invested his oflicers as follows : Bros . A . C . Layton , S . W . ; W . E . Kington , J . W . ; Rev . F . F . Penruddock , Chap . ; J . Goddard , P . M ., Treas . ; W . G . Nottage , P . M ., Sec ; G . Gray , P . M ., S . D . ; A . Warrell , J . Two candidates for initiation and three joining members having been proposed , the brethren adjourned to the White Hart Hotel , yvhere a recherche banquetjwas served . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , the D . P . G . M . of Berks responding as a Grand Officer , and the Prov . Grand Secretary for the Province of Berks . "The VVorshipful Master ' s Health" was eloquently proposed by Bro . Marshall , I . P . M ., and received with acclamation by the brethren . " The Visitors " having been heartily welcomed by the Secretary , and responded to hy several VV . Ms . and other distinguished guests ,

Bro . Barry ably proposed " The Masonic Chanties , " giving a short , but succinct account of what the Charities are , and eloquently advocated their support . Bro . Wollett , Asst . Prov . G . Sec . of Bucks , responded . The Worshipful Master then proposed ^ " The I . P . M ., Bro . Marshall , " and alluded to the exceptional ability he had displayed in ruling the lodge . Bro . Marshall thanked the brethren for the support they had afforded him , and especially for the crowning mark of . their favour in the Past Master ' s jewel presented that evening .

The toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary " was proposed bv the W . M ., who pointed out to the brethren that upon their officials rested the responsibility of conducting the affairs of the lodge , and that they had done so efficiently was evinced by the prosperous condition the lodge had attained . " The toasts of " The Past Masters" and " The Officers " followed . Bro . Page , D . C , then proposed a special toast , viz ., that of " The Worshipful Master ' s Father" who was the oldest surviving initiate of the lodge , and Bro . T . Dyson feelingly responded .

A capital programme of muMC , under the able direction of Bro . Coward was given , being assisted by Bros . G . and IL Stubbs , and Miss Helen Murby , the latter talented lady was especially appreciated . Bro . F . Martin-Akerman acted as accompanist . In every respect this installation meeting was a decided success , and the lodge fully deserves thc hearty congratulations which were freely bestowed on its Master and officers at the close of its first meeting , of what promises to be a red-letter year for the Windsor Castle Lodge .

We might take this opportunity of calling the attention of the members of the Craft to the unique and magnificent temple in which this lodge meets , it being symbolically arranged and fitted , and well worthy of inspection by any brethren who may c ' lance to visit Windsor . The brethren of the Windsor Castle Lodge are naturally very proud of thtir beautiful temple , and willingly conduct visitors over it .

Etheldreda Lodge , No , 2107 . The installation festival of this youthful lodge , which was consecrated in 1 SS 5 , passed off with great eclat on Thursday , the iSth inst ., when between 70 and So brethren bum the Province nf Cambridgeshire and elsewhere attended . Consequently the lodge room at the White Hart Hotel , Newmarket , was uncomfortablycrowded . Additional zest and interest was given toan ordinarily joyous function by the facts that Bro . Benjamin Chennell , P . P . S . G . W ., one of the ablest and most zealous Masons in Cambridgeshire ,

was about to instal his son , liro . J . Gordon Chennell , into the chair , and that a presentation was to be made to the Masonic veteran . The interest taken in the ceremony may fairly be guaged by the circumstances that there were no fewer than 33 Past Masters present at the Board of Installed Masters , these included thc Prov . Grand Master of Cambridgeshire ( lira . Col . R . Townley Caldwell ); the Deputy Prov . Grand Master ( Bro . Rev . J . II . Gray ); Bros . Richard Clowes , P . G . Std . Br . Eng . ; I . Terry , P . Arnold , Tyler . It should be stated in order to elucidate something which follow ,, that when the W . M . invested his father as Secretary , he expressed the hope that it would keep him out of mischief .

At athe conclusion of the ceremony , the Charity-box was sent round in behalf of the widow nd children of a Cambridge brother , who had died that morning—Bro . VV . R . " right , well known in the district—and the sum of live guineas was collected . The lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to a spacious diniog-hall for banquet . Afterwards the customary loyal and Misonic toasts were given and cordially received .

Bro . Richard Clowes , in responding for " The Grand Officers , " congratulated the Etheldreda Lodge on having chosen his good friend , Bro . Gordon Chennell , for their W . M ., and he congratulated that worthy brother personally upon the high Masonic position he had attained . Might he enjoy a most successful year of office . The speaker also commented brielly on the ritual he had seen .

The Worshipful Master also proposed "The Health of the Provincial Grand Master , " which was heartily received . Col . Caldwell , as P . G . M ., was the right man in the right place . Hc not only carried out his duties in Prov . Grand Lodge in a manner not to be surpassed , but he evinced the keenest interest in all the lodges of his province , fhey all wished him long life to preside over them . ( Applause . )

The Prov . Grand Master said he had to thank them for the very kind way in which "iry had received Ihe toast , and the VV . M . for the eloquent manner in which he had pioposed it . He could assure tlcm it was a very great pleasure to he there ; he always njojed bting picsent at the Elheldreda Lodge , and it had been his good fortune to see 'he last four Worshipful Alasters placed in the chair . ( Applause . ) Besides , he always learned something . It was an especial pleasure lo see so large a number of Past Masters

to constitute the Board of Installed Masters , not only showing their interest in Masonry generally , but also in the Masonic career of their worthy Bro . B . Chennell and his son , who that day was fairly started on his year of office . Another point of interest was to see the son invest the father as one of the officers of his lodge . He was struck with the thoughtful words of wisdom by which that father was invested by the son —( laughter ) — and trusted that the father would attend to the duties of his office worthily , so that he might rise to higher positions in the Craft . ( Renewed laughter ) .

The Worshipful Master next submitted "The Health ofthe D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " remarking that they deeply felt the loss of Bro . A . H . Moyes , but had found a worthy successor in Bro . Rev . J . H . Gray . ( Applause ) . The Deputy Prov . Grand Master , in the course of his reply , said that was really a most interesting occasion , when a son was installed by his father . They congratulated them both

, and wished the son a very successful year of ollice . With regard to the " kindly advice " given by the son to the father when investing him as Secretary , he might suggest that there was a homely proverb which illustrated the situation , but which he would prefer to give in words poetical : Teach not your parent ' s mother to extract The embryo juices of the egg by suction ; —I immense applause ] . The good old lady will the feat enact Quite independent of your kind instruction .

( Renewed applause . ) As to the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , there were so many there that night quite able to speak for themselves . As to the province itself , the knew what was in his heart ( respecting the extension of Masonry ) , and he might tell them that he had heard excellent news that day . He trusted the worthy brethren who had conveyed the information would continue their good work , and that their noble endeavours would result in success in this Goth year of her Majesty ' s reign . ( Applause ) . Bro . J . Turner , LP . M . proposed "The Health of the VVorshipful Master . " They had already seen the stuff he was made off , and that he was a worthy scion of a worthy Mason . ( Applause ) .

The Worshipful Master replied that as they had been pleased to elect him to the chair he would do his best to discharge the duties of his office to the satisfaction of the lodge , and although he had , so to speak , left Newmarket , he should endeavour not to miss a single lodge meeting . The Prov . Grand Master next proposed "The Installing Masters , " and , in singling out Bro . B . Chennell to respond , observed that Bro . Chennell was one of the pillars of Freemasonry in their province . ( Applaus * . ) He ( Colonel Caldwell ) had a most pleasing duty to perform that night , in presenting to Bro . Chennell a testimonial from Etheldreda

Lodge in recognition of the personal esteem in which he was held and of the good Maso lie work he had done for the brethren . ( Applause . ) Originally a strong and energetic Mason in No . 88 , he was one of the fouiders of the Etheldreda Lodge , and therefore one of its pillows . Moreover , he was a man of great Masonic lore , so that many a Mason would fancy himself well equipped if he remembered one-half of what Bro . Chennell had forgotten . ( Applause . ) He was , too , a Mason always ready to afford instruction to others . He ( Col . Caldwell ) had seen his excellent work in No . SS , and that day ' s work showed he had not lost his cunning . Further , Bro . Chennell was a man who practised the M isonry he taught , and was in all respects a most excellent

member of the Craft . ( Applause . ) Then , personally , Bro . Chennell was an excellent fellow . Why , the very sight of him was enough to cheer anyone , and , if you had a refractory liver to set it right . ( Laughter and applause . ) He was also one to whom the sorrowing heart could pour forth its woes with the assurance of a sympathetic attention , and his kindly advice was ever ready for all . The Prov . G . Master said he had great pleasure in presenting that handsome testimonial ( a silver salver ) , with the hope that it would remind Bro . Chennell of the high regard in which he was held , not only at Newmarket , but throughout the province , and would be handed down to his son and to his son ' s sons to show tne reverence and esteem in which their ancestor was held . ( Applause . )

The piece of plate , which has a border consisting of allegorical designs , perforated and rolled , bears on its face an elaborate ornamental wreath , within which is enclosed the following inscription : " Presented to VV . Bro . B . Chennell , P . P . S . G . W ., by the Brethren of the Etheldreda Lodge , No . 2107 , as a token of their appreciation of the many and valuable services rendered by him to the L idge since its consecration . — IS Feb ., 1 S 97 . " Bro . B . Chennell heartily thanked the Prov . G . M ., and the brethren for the handsome present they had made to him in reognition of his poor services . He certainly had taken a great deal of interest in Masonry ever since he was initiated in N > . S- >;

and if he had done anything good for the noble science which he held most dear , it must have been because it had afforded him so much pleasure . If he had given pleasure to others at the same time , he was doubly repaid by their reception of him . Only last week he had another testimonial presented to him , from his fellow townsmen of Newmarket , after a 30 years' residence amongst them . With regard to the treasure now given to him by the lodge , he hoped as the P . G . M . said that it would be handed down to his posterity . It was more than ever he deserved , but he should ever look upon it with pride , and hoped it would be handed down in his family from generation to generation . ( Applause . )

Bro . B . Chennell then proposed " The Masonic Charities , " and mentioned that he had already ^ , 200 on his list as Steward for the coming Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution ( applause ) , showing lhat they had Masons in their midst ready to demonstrate that virtue which was the distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason ' s heart . ( Applause . ) Bro . J . Terry made a stirring response to the toast . The Cambridge brethren hurried away , to catch the special train back to the University town . Altogether it was a very happy and most successful gatherinj , and Bro . Gordon Chennell must be delighted with the send-off which he ,. received on the auspicious occasion .

Craft Masonry.

to constitute the Board of Installed Masters , not only showing their interest in Masonry generally , but also in the Masonic career of their worthy Bro .

( Applause . )

The piece of plate , which has a border consisting of allegorical designs , perforated and rolled , bears on its face an elaborate ornamental wreath , within which is enclosed the following inscription : " Presented to VV . Bro . B . Chennell , P . P . S . G . W ., by the Brethren of the Etheldreda Lodge , No . 2107 , as a token of their appreciation of the many and valuable services rendered by him to the L idge since its consecration . — IS Feb ., 1 S 97 . " Bro . B . Chennell heartily thanked the Prov . G . M ., and the brethren for the handsome present they had made to him in reognition of his poor services . He certainly had taken a great deal of interest in Masonry ever since he was initiated in N > . S- >;

and if he had done anything good for the noble science which he held most dear , it must have been because it had afforded him so much pleasure .
