In submitting his statement of accounts for the year , the Treasurer was able to report a fairly substantial balance
in the bank , and he gave the pleasing assurance that with the present number of members on the roll , income from subscriptions would adequately cover all working expenses . He , therefore , expressed a hope that in the future all initiation and joining fees should be entirely set apart for the Charities—a suggestion which was well received , and which will probably be acted upon forthwith . Business
concluded , " Hearty good wishes" were expressed all round , and the lodge was closed . Half-an-hour later the brethren and ladies , numbering about 90 , assembled in the drawing-room , and then proceeded to the large hall—richly and tastefully decorated for the occasion—where the banquet was held . The customary list of loyal and Masonic toasts were
submitted and duly honoured . In proposing "The Worshipful Master , " Bro . T . T . Shann said that it was unquestionably the toast of the evening . Bro . Reynolds—initiated in the iodge at the same time as himself—had every brother ' s best wishes , and every lady's too , for success in his next year ' s work . From the humblest position in the lodge , he had gradually worked his
way upwards , until now he enjoyed the highest distinction that his brethren could confer upon him . He had risen by merit , the character of his work during the many years of his official career being , as was well known , of the highest possible order . He full y deserved the confidence of the brethren , and he ( Bro . Shann ) was sure that the honour and dignity of the lodge were in safe keeping for the next \ l months .
Bro . Reynolds , in reply , sincerely thanked the l . P . M . and all the assembled ladies and brethren for the flattering terms in which his name had been introduced , and the hearty manner in which it had been received . It was gratifying to feel that his work had merited their kindly acknowledgment , and to know that during the ensuing year he had the full privilege to claim assistance and advice from
the Past Masters of the lodge , under many of whom he had served , and strict loyalty and forbearance from the brethren whom he was now called upon to rule and guide Masonically . He was particularly pleased , and indeed considered it a great honour , to have for l . P . M . so sterling a brother as Bro . Shann . They had worked together and been associated in various ways for many years , but their
Masonic bond of union had been stronger than any other . Bro . Shann had only to be intimately known to be appreciated . In the lodge he was well known ; hence the abundant manifestations of respect and regard exhibited during the past year . He trusted that he would be spared with health and strength , and that the lodge might enjoy the benefit of his wise counsels for many years to come .
He had the greatest pleasure in asking his acceptance of a beautiful Past Master ' s jewel the inscription on which would explain itself : "Presented to Bro . l ' . Thornhill Shann , P . M ., by the brethren of Prince Edward Lodge , No . 2109 , in recognition of his valuable services . 1 S 93 . " Bro . Shann , in a few well-chosen remarks , suitably acknowledged the gift .
Other toasts , interspersed by appropriate songs from Bros . J . H . Greenwood , Thomson , Brabner , Mortimer , and others , followed . "The Ladies" ( Bro . A . Hilton ) , " The Visiting Brethren" ( Bro . G . Garnett , J . W . ) , "The Newly Invested Officers" ( Bro . W . Webster , P . M . ) , "The
Masonic Chanties " ( Bro . T . T . Shann ) , and the Tyler ' s toast ( Bro . J . R . Fletcher , Tyler ) . Subsequent to the banquet , an entertainment of about an hour ' s duration was given in the drawing-room , after which dancing was indulged in until a late hour . Bro . W . II . Mortimer catered ia his usual satisfactory manner . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .
