The room in which the assembly took place was tastefully decorated with flags and bannerettes bearing representations of Masonic emblems . The proceedings commenced with the Grand March at 9 . 30 p m .
and terminated about 4 o ' clock the next morning . Bro . Sergeant Smith acted as M . C , and music was supplied by Messrs . C . Grant , A Templeton , J . Mackenzie , J . Lawson , and D . Smith . Pianoforte music was contributed at in tervals during the evcnine by some of those present , and the whole gathering was one of the most success ul held fo some time . The Earl of Elgin , the new Viceroy of India , arrived at Bombay on board the Peninsular and Oriental Company ' s steamer , Rome , on Saturday last , and landed amid the usual salutes .
To-morrow ( Saturday ) will be the birthday of the Emperor William of Germany , and the auspicious event will lie celebrated with more than the usual eclat in Berlin , the Kings of Saxony and Wurtemburg being expected to arrive on a visit lo his Majesty .
Captain Moberley , who commanded the artillery in the Fort Salisbury column during the recent campaign in Matabeleland , is proceeding , at the request of the Cape Government , to King Williamstown to instruct the colonial troops in the use of the Maxim guns just imported by the Cape Government .

Though the figures of the Volunteer returns for the last year will not be issued for some little time yet , it has been ascertained at the War Office that they will show a total of about 219 , 300 efficients , an increase of 2000 over that of 1 S 92 , and'of more than ' sooo over that of 1 S 91 . The total of last year has only been exceeded three times since the force was instituted—in iSSG , when there were 221 , 105 efficients ; in 1 SS 7 , 221 , 491 ( the highest total recorded ); and in 1 SS 8 , 220 , 124 .
An interesting little impromptu ceremony occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Lyceum Theatre . It seems that the ever sprightly Mrs . Keeley was recognised " in front" by Mr . Barrett that nearly half a century ago she herself had represented Cinderella in the very same playhouse , her

John Glass , of Old Greyfriars , Edinburgh , delivered a Masonic sermon in the Established Church Auchtermuchty ( his native to . vn ) . There was a very large attendance , and besides the members of the ! o-aI lodge—St . Cyrs , No . 121—deputations were also present from Coupar o' Fife Lodfie , No . 19 , Coupar ; St . John' ? ,
No . 35 , Falkland ; and King Robert the Bruce , No . 304 , Ladybank . The members of the Craft , as well as the preacher , wore Masonic clothing ; and the text chosen was from Hebrews , chapter xiii . verse 1— "Let brotherly love continue "—from which a discourse was delivered which was listened to with rapt attention , and the praise part of the services was in keeping with the subject under review . A liberal collection was made in behalf of the poor of the parish .
A deputation from the Council of Almoners of Christ ' s Hospital was introduced to the Commissioners of Sewers of the ^ ity of London by Bro . Alderman Vaughan Morgan , Treasurer of the institution , for the purpose of petitioning that the recent order to carry out certain sanitary arrangements at the School should be rescinded . It was pointed out that the scheme would involve an outlay of between £ 15 , 000 and £ 20 , 000 , which , as the School was about to be removedthe
, Council would not be justified in undertaking . It was further slated that out of the 24 deaths which had occurred during the last 12 years only one could be attributed to the drainage , and out of the 22 cases of scarlet fever which had caused such commotion only one was attributed to that cause . They therefore prayed that the order might be rescinded , and a temporary arrangement adopted in its stead . The matter was referred to a Committee .
The sub-Committee appointed by the Olicana Lodge , No . 1522 , Ilkley , to carry out the arrangements in connection with an entertainment for the young people and a ball for the adults at the Middelton Hotel on Wednesday , the 10 th inst ., may pride themselves on the success which has crowned their efforts . The members of the lodge , their wives and children , together with a sprinkling of
sweethearts and friends , spent one of the happiest evenings that has fallen to their lot for some time . Attention was first paid lo the litt ' e ones , who a'sembled between three and f .. ur o ' clock , the latter hour being the time fixeJ for the commencement of the entertainment . Forhalf-an-hourthe youngsters were delighted with a variety show , and afterwards partook of tea , which was followed by a second instalment of Punch and Judy . 'This was succeeded by
games and dances , which were much enjoyed by all present . To complete the function , a handsome Christmas tree had been provided , and was laden with dolls , purses , fans , bonbons , drums , and innumerable fancy articles . Labatt . Supper was served from y . 30 to 12 , and the affair throughout passed off splendidly .

Bridgett , the British Consul at Buenos Ayres , been arrested at Salta , in the Argentine Republic , and it is expected that at an early date he will be extradited and conveyed under the charge of the Justice of
the country . The new fast gunboat Renard , built by Messrs . Laird , of Birkenhead , has been turned out ot hand after having been fitted at Sheerness Dockyard , and will be attached to the Midway Reserve until required for service . She has cost £ 57 , 300 , carries an equipment of two 471 ' n . guns , four 3-pounder quick-firing guns , and five torpedo-tubes , and has been shown to have a speed of nearly 20 knots per hour .
The total receipts in respect of last year ' s Hospital Saturday Fund have just been returned as having slightly exceeded £ 20 , 000 , and at a special meeting of the Board of Delegates on Saturday evening last , it was unanimously resolved that the sum of £ 17 , 778 should be divided among the 1 G 1 participating institutions .
The Master of the Union Workhouse at Dorchester has received from Bro . G . J . G . Gregory , on behalf of the Faith and Unanimity Lodge , No . 417 , the sum of £ 1 153 . 3 d . collected at the annual banquet on the 3 rd inst . The sum will be applied , as in former years , to providing the children with an extra summer trip to the seaside .
The Bach choir , having arranged to give their customary three concerts during the present season , the first took place on Tuesday in the new Queen's Hall , when a mass in G by Piofessor Stanford was given . The second concert is fixed for the 15 th March , and the last the Sth May , when the programme will include unaccompanied choral music , among which will be selections from " Orlandodi Laers " and " Palestine . An event of considerable interest to the Masonic community of Karachi took place on Tuesday , the 2 Sth ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , when Bro . Dainshaw Pestonjee Ghadiali , Head Master of the Parsee Virabijee School , was installed in the Eastern Chair , as R . W . M . of Lodge Harmony , No . 4 S 5 ( S . C ) , to which high honour he had been elected by the brethren as a tribute to his zeal and
attachment for Freemasonry evinced by him during the tenure of his office as Senior Warden , by delivering a series of lectures , and expounding some of the difficult points relating to the Craft . Bro . Ghadiali , though a very young Mason , has already given a marked evidence of his Masonic lore , and with such a head , well versed in Masonic
literature , and assisted by an educated staff of officers , among whom are some of high University training , the Lodge Harmony is bound to prosper . Among the officebearers for the ensuing year are to be noticed the name of a well-known barrister , a distinguished graduate and pleader , a doctor well established in practice , an engineer , and other intelligent members of the community .

55 th year . We hail him at once as a Bloomsbury man . tlis father was , however , a Cheshireman , and his mother a Glaswegian . His first music lessons were received from his mother , but he afterwards studied under his brother , a distinguished musician . Mr . Weaver has gained his valuable experience by always being in an orchestra . He is certainly a man of great musical accomplishment . His principal
instrument is the violin , but he has had practical experience of almost every other . Mr . Weaver is thoroughly devoted to his ait , and is never happier than when sitting at his table composing , his only trouble being that he is not able to interpret his ideas quick enough . His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has kindly consented to lend his model of the Britannia to the International Yachting Exhibition , to be held at the Royal Aquarium on February ist to 2 Sth . A very fine loan collection is anticipated , the arrangement of which Mr . Dixon Kemp has promised to superintend .
Though the figures of the Volunteer returns for the last year will not be issued for some little time yet , it has been ascertained at the War Office that they will show a total of about 219 , 300 efficients , an increase of 2000 over that of 1 S 92 , and'of more than ' sooo over that of 1 S 91 . The total of last year has only been exceeded three times since the force was instituted—in iSSG , when there were 221 , 105 efficients ; in 1 SS 7 , 221 , 491 ( the highest total recorded ); and in 1 SS 8 , 220 , 124 .
An interesting little impromptu ceremony occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Lyceum Theatre . It seems that the ever sprightly Mrs . Keeley was recognised " in front" by Mr . Oscar Barrett , who at once went to pay his respects to the charming old lady . Mrs . Keeley reminded Mr . Barrett that nearly half a century ago she herself had represented Cinderella in the very same playhouse , her
associates being Mr . Alfred Wigan , Mr . Keeley , Mrs . Woolidge , Miss Faiebrother , Miss Villiers , Miss L . Howard , and Miss Grove . During the interval between the acts , at Mrs . Keeley ' s request , Mr . Barrett conducted her behind the scenes , and , in Mr . Henry Irving ' s room , introduced all the members of the company to her . Mrs .
Keeley ' s health was heartily drunk by all present , and , in replying to their cordial greeting , the Cinderella of the past , who quoted several of her old lines , hoped that the Cinderella of the present would enjoy the same good health as she did at SS years of age , and look back with the same pleasure on by-gone days . Mrs . Keeley , who was in great spirits , complimented all the ladiss and gentl msn .

John Glass , of Old Greyfriars , Edinburgh , delivered a Masonic sermon in the Established Church Auchtermuchty ( his native to . vn ) . There was a very large attendance , and besides the members of the ! o-aI lodge—St . Cyrs , No . 121—deputations were also present from Coupar o' Fife Lodfie , No . 19 , Coupar ; St . John' ? ,
No . 35 , Falkland ; and King Robert the Bruce , No . 304 , Ladybank . The members of the Craft , as well as the preacher , wore Masonic clothing ; and the text chosen was from Hebrews , chapter xiii . verse 1— "Let brotherly love continue "—from which a discourse was delivered which was listened to with rapt attention , and the praise part of the services was in keeping with the subject under review . A liberal collection was made in behalf of the poor of the parish .
A deputation from the Council of Almoners of Christ ' s Hospital was introduced to the Commissioners of Sewers of the ^ ity of London by Bro . Alderman Vaughan Morgan , Treasurer of the institution , for the purpose of petitioning that the recent order to carry out certain sanitary arrangements at the School should be rescinded . It was pointed out that the scheme would involve an outlay of between £ 15 , 000 and £ 20 , 000 , which , as the School was about to be removedthe
, Council would not be justified in undertaking . It was further slated that out of the 24 deaths which had occurred during the last 12 years only one could be attributed to the drainage , and out of the 22 cases of scarlet fever which had caused such commotion only one was attributed to that cause . They therefore prayed that the order might be rescinded , and a temporary arrangement adopted in its stead . The matter was referred to a Committee .
The sub-Committee appointed by the Olicana Lodge , No . 1522 , Ilkley , to carry out the arrangements in connection with an entertainment for the young people and a ball for the adults at the Middelton Hotel on Wednesday , the 10 th inst ., may pride themselves on the success which has crowned their efforts . The members of the lodge , their wives and children , together with a sprinkling of
sweethearts and friends , spent one of the happiest evenings that has fallen to their lot for some time . Attention was first paid lo the litt ' e ones , who a'sembled between three and f .. ur o ' clock , the latter hour being the time fixeJ for the commencement of the entertainment . Forhalf-an-hourthe youngsters were delighted with a variety show , and afterwards partook of tea , which was followed by a second instalment of Punch and Judy . 'This was succeeded by
games and dances , which were much enjoyed by all present . To complete the function , a handsome Christmas tree had been provided , and was laden with dolls , purses , fans , bonbons , drums , and innumerable fancy articles . The wives , sweethearts , and friends were entertained later on , a programme of dances having been arranged to begin at nine o'clock . 1 he M . C . ' s were Bros . A . Holmes , S . W ., and M . Labatt . Supper was served from y . 30 to 12 , and the affair throughout passed off splendidly .

Lord Esher ' s health has so greatly improved of late that he has been able to leave town for a change of air . His lordship hopes to be able to resume his judicial duties in about a fortnight's time . Brethren are invited to send for the list of Masonic Books published at the office of the Freemason . Many works of interest both to the Masonic student and general reader
have recently been added , and the publisher will gladly forward a copy to any address on receipt of a post-card . Mr . Jabez Spencer Balfour , the notorious author of the Liberator frauds and others too numerous to mention , has , through the intervention of Mr . Bridgett , the British Consul at Buenos Ayres , been arrested at Salta , in the Argentine Republic , and it is expected that at an early date he will be extradited and conveyed under the charge of the Justice of
the country . The new fast gunboat Renard , built by Messrs . Laird , of Birkenhead , has been turned out ot hand after having been fitted at Sheerness Dockyard , and will be attached to the Midway Reserve until required for service . She has cost £ 57 , 300 , carries an equipment of two 471 ' n . guns , four 3-pounder quick-firing guns , and five torpedo-tubes , and has been shown to have a speed of nearly 20 knots per hour .
The total receipts in respect of last year ' s Hospital Saturday Fund have just been returned as having slightly exceeded £ 20 , 000 , and at a special meeting of the Board of Delegates on Saturday evening last , it was unanimously resolved that the sum of £ 17 , 778 should be divided among the 1 G 1 participating institutions .
The Master of the Union Workhouse at Dorchester has received from Bro . G . J . G . Gregory , on behalf of the Faith and Unanimity Lodge , No . 417 , the sum of £ 1 153 . 3 d . collected at the annual banquet on the 3 rd inst . The sum will be applied , as in former years , to providing the children with an extra summer trip to the seaside .
The Bach choir , having arranged to give their customary three concerts during the present season , the first took place on Tuesday in the new Queen's Hall , when a mass in G by Piofessor Stanford was given . The second concert is fixed for the 15 th March , and the last the Sth May , when the programme will include unaccompanied choral music , among which will be selections from " Orlandodi Laers " and " Palestine . "
On Monaay , at Admiralty House , Simonstown , Lady Loch , in the presence of a brilliant gathering , presented Lieutenant P . V . Lewes , of H . M . S . Blanch , the Distinguished Service Order , conferred upon him by the Queen for his services on the Juha river in rescuing some Englishmen , officials of the British East Africa Company , who were being besieged by mutinous Somaulis in the month of August last .
Bro . J . Chas . Harrison , M . D ., whose mother lodge is the Royal Savoy , is living at ig , Harley-street . After leaving England , in 1 SS 7 , he affiliated with the Adrian Michi gan Lodge , No . tg . He had lived at Adrian upwards of 20 years . We congratulate Bro . He believes it is only necessary to live correctly to maintain good health . He is associated with Mrs . Longshore-Potts , M . D ., with whom he first visited England in 1 SS 5 , and who is doing for women the
same good work Bro . Harrison is doing for men . The other members of his party are his mother and brother , G . E . Harrison , and his wife . G . E . Harrison took his first Masonic steps at the Zetland Lodge , New South Wales , and is also a member ot the chapter and commandery at Adrian .
An event of considerable interest to the Masonic community of Karachi took place on Tuesday , the 2 Sth ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , when Bro . Dainshaw Pestonjee Ghadiali , Head Master of the Parsee Virabijee School , was installed in the Eastern Chair , as R . W . M . of Lodge Harmony , No . 4 S 5 ( S . C ) , to which high honour he had been elected by the brethren as a tribute to his zeal and
attachment for Freemasonry evinced by him during the tenure of his office as Senior Warden , by delivering a series of lectures , and expounding some of the difficult points relating to the Craft . Bro . Ghadiali , though a very young Mason , has already given a marked evidence of his Masonic lore , and with such a head , well versed in Masonic
literature , and assisted by an educated staff of officers , among whom are some of high University training , the Lodge Harmony is bound to prosper . Among the officebearers for the ensuing year are to be noticed the name of a well-known barrister , a distinguished graduate and pleader , a doctor well established in practice , an engineer , and other intelligent members of the community .
Bro . James Weaver , P . M ., the well known Secretary of the Whittington Lodge , No . S 62 , iwas the subject of a notice and portrait in the Morning Leader on Monday last , under the heading of "Music and the Drama , " and we have much pleasure in transferring it to our columns : " Mr . James Weaver , who is responsible for the selection of the music to "Cinderella" at the Lyceum , is now in his
55 th year . We hail him at once as a Bloomsbury man . tlis father was , however , a Cheshireman , and his mother a Glaswegian . His first music lessons were received from his mother , but he afterwards studied under his brother , a distinguished musician . Mr . Weaver has gained his valuable experience by always being in an orchestra . He is certainly a man of great musical accomplishment . His principal
instrument is the violin , but he has had practical experience of almost every other . Mr . Weaver is thoroughly devoted to his ait , and is never happier than when sitting at his table composing , his only trouble being that he is not able to interpret his ideas quick enough . By the way , he is an enthusiastic Freemason , and , the founder of the Lodge of St . Asaph , every member of which must be connected either with the musical or theatrical profession .
