Grand Master , lodges and individual brethren are to appear in mourning for six months , in token of respect to the memory of the late lamented M . W . Bro . the Earl of Lathom , G . C . B ., Pro Grand Master of England , and R . W . Prov . Grand

In this the authorities have adopted the course which has been invariably followed in all similar cases , the latest instance being that of Lord Lathom's predecessor ( Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon ) , vvho vvas Pro Grand Master from 18 74 until his death towards the end of June , 1890 . * * #

We beg to announce that we have obtained the permission of the Grand Secretary to photograph the portrait of the late Bro . the Earl of Lathom , G . C . B ., Pro G . Master , and to reproduce from the photograph a portrait of his lordship vvith a view to its being

published at the earliest possible opportunity ; there being a very large number of brethren vvho will desire to possess a permanent memorial of one who both within and outside Masonry was so greatly beloved and so highly respected .

Hughan , P . G . D ., and after the function is concluded a cold collation will be served in the banqueting hall .

# # # A Regular Convocation of the Prov . Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Freemasonry in India was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Byculla , Bombay , on the 5 th of September last . Comp . K . R . Cama , G . Superintendent , presided , and in the course of his address

strongly urged upon those pr esent to use their utmost endeavours to promote the interests of Royal Arch Masonry . He gathered from the returns he had received from the Prov . G . Scribe E . that during the past six months , with here and there an exception , the

Chapters had been doing well . There had been , altogether , an increase of 13 per cent , in the aggregate membership , but , he remarked , that Craft Masons did not appear to take very great interest in the Royal Arch , and he wanted the companions to do what they could to induce good brethren to join their ranks .

* » * We learn from the Philadelphia Keystone that , in consequence of the decree of the 13 th June , 18 97 , which vvas issued by the then Grand Master Dam of the Grand Lodge of Peru , removing the Bible from the

altars of all lodges in its jurisdiction , having been abrogated by a decree of Bro . J . A . Ego-Aguirre , the present Grand Master , datid 12 th June of this year , the Grand Lodges of New York and Iowa have renewed their relations of amity vvith the Grand Lodge of Peru .

* * * A regular quarterly communication of the District Grand Lodge of Queensland vvas held at Freemasons ' Hall , Brisbane , on the 7 th September . Bro . the Hon . A . C . Gregory , C . M . G ., Dist . G . Master , presided , and there appears to have been a full attendance of Grand

Officers , Present and Past , as well as of the representatives ot lodges . In the course of the proceedings a motion , of which Bro . A . Corrie , Past Dist . S . G . W ., had given notice , to the effect that the District Board of General Purposes see that Agenda papers , setting forth the business to be done at the Quarterly Communications of Dist . G . Lodge be issued to all Dist . G .

Lodge Officers , and the VV . Masters of lodges in the District are issued seven clear days in advance of the appointed dates of meeting was considered at some length , and in the end was adopted , but in an amended form—the papers to be circulated 14 . days in advance instead of seven . » » *

It was vvith deep regret that on the eve of going to press last week we received intelligence of the death of a brother who in his days played a somewhat conspicuous part in Freemasonry . We allude to the late Bro . John Moxon Clabon , who was appointed S . G . Deacon in 1 S 66 and Grand Scribe N . of Supreme

Grand Chaper in 1869 . He had also taken the 30 " in the Ancient and Accepted Rite , but among his most valuable services to the Craft were those rendered to our Charitable Institutions , of all of which he vvas a consistent and generous supporter . He vvas a Vice-Patron of both Schools , and Vice-President of the

Benevolent Institution , and , in addition , had acted as Festival Steward five times for the Girls' School , four times for the Boys' School , and three times for the Old People ' s Institution . To the members of our deceased brother ' s family and his many friends in Masonry we offer our most respectful sympithy .

We offer a similar expression of sympathy to the family and friends of another distinguished brother recently deceased—Bro . George Plucknett , whose services as Treasurer of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys from 18 73 , when he was chosen to succeed the late Bro . Algernon Perkins , P . G . W ., in that office until

1894 , must still be fresh in the minds of our readers . Bro . Plucknett vvas the senior surviving S . G . Deacon of Grand Lodge , having received his appointment at the hands of the late Bro . Earl of Zetland , then M . W . G . Master , in 1864 , or two years earlier than Bro . Clabon . He , too , was likewise a strong supporter of

our Institutions , not merely by reason of the services we have already referred to in connection vvith his long tenure of the Treasurership of the Boys' School , but also as a Vice Patron of the same Institution , Life Governor of the other two , and occasionally Steward for one or other Charity .

* # # A correspondent very courteously calls our attention to an attack upon Freemasonry which appeared in the Catholic News of the 12 th inst . It is neither more nor less than one of those outbursts of anger which Roman Catholicism appear to take a delight in

indulging in periodically at our expense . We have grown so accustomed to this kind of onslaught that it hardly seems worth our while to notice them further . Why , vvhen it is almost universally recognised that Freemasonry is a staunch supporter of religion and good government , the Papacy , which is interested in the

maintenance of reli gion and order , should keep on abusing us , is a secret known only to itself . We regret the attitude it studiously adopts towards us , and as no remonstrance of ours , however well it may be supported by recognised facts , appears to have the

slightest effect in diminishing its hostility , we can do no more than remonstrate . But while we cannot see that any advantage that will result from any reply to this particular attack of the Catholic News , vve are none the less grateful to our correspondent for having brought it to our notice .

* * We have been asked to reply to the following question apropos of the recent grant of an honorarium to the Secretary of the Boys' School out of the funds of the Institution : " Can a contributor to the funds of the Royal Masonic Institutions demand his money

back in consequence of its being devoted to purposes other than those for which it was contributed ? " VVe are not sufficiently learned in the law to deal competently vvith a question of this kind , and we shall be glad if someone of those who are competent will enable us to satisfy our querist .

•* » Our opinion , which , as that of a layman , must be taken for what it is worth , is that money contributed to any one of our Institutions may lawfully be expended to meet the general purposes of such Institution , If money is given to found a prize or a scholarship , or

for the perpetual presentation of one or more candidates , it must be devoted to the purpose specified , and no other ; but if it is given to the funds generally , then it may be used in defraying the general expenditure , as determined and approved by the governing body . » * #

We take the opportunity of reminding our readers that the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cambridgeshire is appointed to be held in the Masonic Hall , Cambridge , on Monday , the 2 Sth instant , under the auspices of the Lodge of the Three Grand Principles , No . 441 . The hour fixed for the meeline is 5 . 45 p . m ., and the customary banquet will follow at the Lion Hotel at 7 p . m .

At the regular communication of the District G . Lodge of Northern China , which was held in Shanghai on thi 22 nd of September , the proceedings vvere more than usually interesting in consequence of a portrait of Bro . Lewis Moore , D . G . M ., which had been

presented to the District G . Lodge by the Bros . Cooper , was unveiled by Bro . Cornelius Thorne , Past . Dist . G . M ., the presentation being brielly , but appropriately , acknowledged by Bro . Moore , vvho presided at the meeting in his chair of Dist . G . M .
