to the banquet , which was served in the Assembly Rooms by Bro . Hawison , of the Green Dragon Hotel , in a manner that was deserving of the highest praise . The chair was occupied by Bro . Lewthwaite , W . M ., and he was supported by the Past Masters , the officers , and brethren of the Jodge , as well as by several visitors , numbering about 60 in all . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had

been done full justice to , Bro . Wood , P . M ., presented , on behalf of the officers and brethren of the lodge , a very handsome Past Master ' s jewel ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) to Bro . J . C . Thompson , I . P . M . At the same time Bro . J . Eden , S . W ., the late Secretary , presented Bro . Thompson with an album containing all

the lodge summonses issued during his year of office , with addenda giving a summary of the business of the past year , a record of the dispensations ( three ) that had been granted , and the autographs of the surviving Past Masters of the lodge . Bro . J . C . Thompson acknowledged the gifts in suitable terms . The Tyler's toast brought a pleasant evening to a close .

PORTLAND . —Portland Lodge ( No . 1037 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this lodge took place at the Masonic Hall on Thursday afternoon , the 17 th inst ., a fair number of members and visitors being present to open the lodge . The principal event of the day was the placing in the chair of King Solomon Bro . Richard Cox , and we are fully sure he must have been pleased to see such a

gathering of brethren from All Souls , several officers of the Fleet , and other lodges in the county , the ceremony of installing the Master being ably performed by the outgoing Master , Bro . G . J . Bradley , assisted by Bros . B . Morgan , Gibbs , C . F . Arden , A . Graham , and others . After the ceremony the brethren adjourned to the

banqueting room , where a bounteous supply of good things awaited them , the tables being decorated with a profusion of roses , geraniums , fuchsias , and hothouse plants . The capabilities of the lodge must have been somewhat tried , but the Stewards , Bros . VV . R . P . Jeffery and T . Hoskins , left no effort wanting to contribute to the comfort of all present , it being the unanimous wish Bro . Richard Cox should have a prosperous year of office .

William Glade , who generalised the staff of

waiters with precision and skill , and which reflects infinite credit on his able management . The usual toasts were then given and duly honoured . The W . They were , he said , honoured that evening by the presence of a distinguished brother , namely , Bro . Hunter , whom they welcomed in true Masonic manner .

( i «> . Hunter was delighted to pay a visit to the Gilbert Greenall Lodge , which he complimented upon its strength and efficiency , and paid a high compliment to Bro . Finney for the admirable manner in which he had performed the ceremony of installation . Bro . Bolton proposed in suitable terms "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " and , in reply , Bro . Heaton

The minutes of the previous meeting were read , and unanimously confirmed . The ballots , taken separately , were declared to be unanimous in favour of the admission , of Mr . Frank Smith and Mr . John Montgomery . Bro . Wm . John Russell , who had been initiated in this lodge on April 6 th , 1 SS 2 , passed July 15 , 1 SS 2 , and who , since that time , had been residing in New Zealand , was duly raised to the

Sublime Degree of a Master Mason . Bro . E . J . Whelan was regularly and duly introduced , and passed to the Degree of F . C Mr . John Montgomery being present , he was introduced and initiated into the mysteries and the privileges of Ancient Masonry . The by-laws were then read by the Secretary . Bro . W . M . for the ensuing year . The acting W . M ., Bro . J . J . Marsh , in a good speech , informed Bro . W . R . Vassila of the great honour which had been conferred upon him . Bro . W . R . Vassila , the W . M . elect , thanked the members not only for having elected him as W . M ., an honour he had been working for thesepastten years . TheyhadattheirMay meeting unanimously recommended him for Prov . G . Lodge

honours , and those in power had honoured the lodge in selecting him for the very high rank he now held of Provincial Grand Standard Bearer of Middlesex . He felt both thankful and heartfelt gratitude for his provincial honour and his position of W . M . elect . His acts would be to complete the round dozen of Stewards by accompanying Bro . J . A . Wilson to Brighton as such , provided their

Secretary carried out his part of the contract by getting him a sufficient sum on his list , beside his own donations , to render it worthy of the high , reputation enjoyed by the Lebanon Lodge , 1326 . However , quite independent of this proposed Stewardship for Boys , he promised them he would join Bro . J . A . Wilson in representing this lodge at the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

The next business was the election of a Treasurer for the ensuing year , Bro . Edwin Gilbeit , P . G . P . Middlesex , P . M ., Treasurer , having declined to be again re-elected Treasurer in consequence of his continued ill-health , he being much too ill to attend that meeting . He has held the office of Treasurer of the lodge and chapter for many years past with great credit to himself and with every

satisfaction to both lodge and chapter . Bro . Samuel Page , Organist , having agreed to accept that office for ensuing twelve months he was duly elected as the Treasurer . It was agreed to hold the Audit meeting at Bro . Gilbert's house on Wednesday , July 17 th . Bios . H . Forss , P . M ., S . Wheeler , and F . Dunstan , in addition to those provided for by the bye-laws , were elected Auditors . Some

gentlemen were proposed lor initiation . Bro . John Alfred Wilson , C . S ., was unanimously elected as the Steward for the Boys' School for 1 SS 0-7 . Bros . C . W . Baker , J . D ., and J . C . All business being ended , the lodge was closed and adjourned . Refreshment followed labour , which was served under the management of Bro . H . P . Harris . The toasts were all given ar . d responded to , and after a few houis spent in social enjoyment the brethren separated .
