appearance , and in or out of the lodge has always been found active in the interests of his brethren . The proceedings on Thursday afternoon commenced with the usual routine of business at Masonic meetings , which having been duly transacted , Bro . W . Lamborn , the outgoing W . M ., installed his successor , Bro . E . R . Clarke , and placed that brother in the chair of K . S ., with all the imposing ceremonies prescribed on such occasions . We

must en passant pay a high compliment to Bro . Lamborn for the very efficient manner in which he renders every ceremony he takes in hand . Speaking Masonically , he is , we believe , the oldest member of the fraternity on the lodge roll , and took a prominent part in the formation of the Abbey Lodge , since which time he has ever been ready to perform any Masonic duty , and to instruct his younger

The banquet was served at the George Hote ) , Battle , and great credit is due to the host , Mr . Riley , for the efficient manner in which he catered for the wants of the brethren . Full justice having been done to the dinner , the W . M . proposed the first toast , "The Queen and the Craft , " remarking that as a mother Her Majesty had three sons who held a high position in the Craft . The W . M . next proposed " The Health of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales

M . W . Grand Master of England , " referring to the readiness the Prince always showed in attending to Masonic and public business , and hoped that His Royal Highness would live to decorate the discoverer of the North Pole with a medal , and that that gentleman would be an Englishman . Full honour having also been done to the other Masonic chiefs , Bro . C . D . Jones proposed "The Health of the VV . M . who had been installed that day ,

Bro . Clarke . No brother was more worthy of that honour , and he had been pleased to notice Bro . Clarke ' s progress in Masonry , and the great zeal he had displayed for theCraft . Bro . Clarke returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him , and assured the brethren that he would endeavour to give every satisfaction . He hoped that during his year of office they would inaugurate a system , bv which every member of the Abbev Lodge would in time

become a Life Governor of one of the Masonic Charities . He was pleased the other day to see that , although an average of one in three only passed the University examinations , that out of eleven candidates sent up from the Masonic Boys' School , ten passed , and most of them took high honours . Bro . Clarke hoped he would be able to attend , not onl y the meetings of his own lodge , but of others , and gain experience in Masonic working . The toast of "The

Visitors" wascntrustcd to Bro . Wells , who spoke highly of the good feeling that existed between the Abbey and its mother lodge , the Derwent . The W . M . of the Derwent Lodge had always e , reat' pleasure in visiting thc Abbey Lodge , and paid a high compliment to the Past Masters of thc lodge . He had never seen better working than Bro . Lamborn ' s that day . Bro . Reed , of the Derwent Lodge , was also called upon to respond , and in the course of his remarks

recommended the brethren of the Abbey Lodge to join the Provincial Charities Association . The W . M . ' , in proposing " The Health of thc Past Masters , " referred to the great interest taken by these brethren in the lodge after they had passed the chair , and said they had becn as willing when necessary to take the minor offices in the lodge as readilyafter they had passed the chair as before . Bro . Thorpe , whose name was coupled with thc toast , regretted the

absence , from unavoidable circumstances , of Bro . Lamborn , the I . P . M . He ( Bro . Thorpe ) , as a humble member and one of the founders , was pleased to note the prosperity of the Abbey Lodge . They had been mainly instigated to open it by an uncle of his , who was at the time a Mason of forty years' standing , and Provincial Grand 'Treasurer of Kent . In the opinion of his uncle Past Masters should

not stand icily by , but should be at all times ready to assist in any position . 'There was not now the same necessity for the Past Masters to act , but they were still there when wanted . He congratulated Bro . Clarke on attaining his present high position in the lodge in which he had been initiated . Bro . C . VV . Duke , in response to loud calls , also

replied . The Health of the worthy Treasurer , was also duly honoured , as were also the other toasts on the list , viz ., "The Officers of the Lodge , " "The Masonic Charities , " and "The Stewards . " The Tyler ' s toast wound up one of the most pleasant Masonic gatherings it has been the privilege of the writer to assist at . —Hastings and St . Leonard ' s Observer .

NEWTON ABBOT . —Morning Star Lodge ( No . 139 G ) . —The installation meeting of this South Devon lodge was held on Monday , the 14 th inst ., at their Masonic Rooms , Market-terrace . The I . P . The brethren then adjourned to the Bradley Hotel , where an admirable banquet was well served by Bro . Quick . After the cloth was removed the W . M . gave " The Oueen and the Craft , " alluding to Her Majesty's

gracious patronage always extending to our Institutions . "The Health of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . Grand Master , " was the next toast proposed by the W . M ., who noted the recent visit of H . R . H . to the West to lay the foundation-stones of the cathedral at Truro , and the great progress Masonry had made under his rule . The " R . W . Provincial Grand Master and Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge " next followed , was well received , and responded to

by Bro . Pratt , I . P . M ., P . P . G . S . of Works . Bro . Pratt , I . P . M ., then proposed , in very eulogistic terms , " 'The Health of the W . M ., " praising thc superior way in which the initiation work had been done that day by the VV . M . immediately after his installation . The health was drank with enthusiasm , amid great cheering . Thc W . M ., in reply , thanked the I . P . M . for the very kind manner in which the toast of his health had been proposed , and the hearty and genuine way in whicb it had been received by

the brethren . He trusted he should prove worthy of the great honour they had that day conferred on him , and that under his rule the lodge would prove a bright " Morning Star , " assuring the brethren that his rule would aim to secure " in things essential unity , in things doubtful liberty , and in all things charity . " In closing his reply he appealed to the P . M . ' s for their fostering care and attendance at lodge , referring them to Goldsmith ' s lines : " To cry each art , reprove each dull delay ;

A lure to brighten worlds , and show the way . to the officers for punctual and regular attendance , and asked the brethren all for united assistance to render the ritual in a truly Masonic spirit . Other toasts followed , including " Our Poor Brethren , " in giving which the W . M . appealed to the brethren present to give practical proof of their sympathy , which was liberally responded to , and which sum will be devoted to a local Masonic Charity . The Tyler ' s toast ended a very pleasant meeting .

Grand Superintendent , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , who had kindly undertaken to lake charge of all sums sent for thc Masonic memorial in the new edifice . The other business

being disposed of , the companions adjourned to the New Inn , where Mrs . Cook provided an excellent and substantial repast , to wliich ample justice was done , the brethren spendinga very agreeablcevening , andseparatingatan early hour . We hope the example set by theTywardreath Lodge

and Chapter , ancl by the I'owcy Lodge , may be followed by all the other Masonic bodies in Cornwall , so that a sum worthy of the Masons may be raised towards the proposed Masonic Memorial in thc new Cathedral , especially now that the popular and beloved Prov . Grand Master has adopted the scheme , and taken so warm an interest in thc Cathedral .

CONSECRATION OF A MYSTIC TEMPLE . On Tuesday , the 15 th inst ., Bro . John Yarker , of Manchester , the I . M . Sov . Grand Alaster General ofthe Order , with the assistance of several of the Grand Officers , performed the ceremony of consecration of a Mystic Temple , at No . 77 i , Bishopsgate-street , where a suite of private rooms have been leased by the brethren for the exclusive use of the members of thc Ancient and Primitive Kite .

After the consecration . 111 . Bro . James Hill , 32 , proceeded to instal the VV . M . elect , and invest thc officers of the Rose of Sharon , Rose Croix Chapter , No . C . 'The brethren afterwards adjourned to Crosby Hall , where a sumptuous banquet had been prepared . By a reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that the chapter meets every week as a chapter of instruction , and Royal Arch Masons arc admitted to the working of the Fourth , Fifth , and Sixth Degrees .
