The utmost satisfaction was expressed with the manner in which the hostess , Mrs . Porter ( widow of a highlyesteemed brother ) , attended to thc wants and comforts of her guests . WEST MALLING . —Mailing Abbey Lodge ( No . 10 G 3 ) . —The annual meeting of this lodge for the installation of thc Worshipful Master for the ensuing year

Pointer 'The lodge was opened in the usual form by Bro . E . T . Luck , W . Si ., who afterwards vacated the chair , which was then occupied by the Installing Master , Bro . B . Sidney

A ' . Spencer , P . M ., P . G . S ., and was dul y installed by Bro . Wilmot , who rendered tlie ceremony in his usual effective and impressive manner . The newlyinstalled Master then invested the I . P . M ., and

subsequently his officers , as follows : Bros . Rev . J . H . Timins , Chaplain ; Hon . R . Neville , Treasurer ; XV . Page , Secretary ; T . Crowe , S . W . ; J . E . Meredith . J . W . ; G . Friend , S . l " .. ; W . Jude , J . D . ; XV . B . Langridge , I . G . ; D . XV . Langton , D . C : W . S . Monckton , S . ; and R . Pointer , Tyler . 'The several officers were duly installed by Bro . Wilmot , who also gave the charges to the Master , Wardens , and brethren . A vote of thanks to Bro . Luck , I . P . M ., for the

able manner in which he had presided over the lodge during the past year , was proposed by Bro . A . Spencer , seconded by Bro . F . Spencer , and carried unanimously . 'The W . M . ( Bro . May ) thereupon addressed a few words to Bro . Luck , and , on behalf of the lodge , presented him with a Past Master ' s jewel , wliich had been previously unanimously voted to him by the brethren of the lodge in recognition of his services .

After transacting business of the usual formal nature , the lodge was closed . Subsequently the brethren sat down to a banquet of a recherche character , presided over by the newly-installed W . M ., Bro . Francis J . C May , the duties of Vice-Chairman being ably discharged by Bro . T . Crowe , S . W ., who was supported by thc junior officers of the lodge . Dinner being concluded , and dessert placed on the

table , the Chairman gave in succession the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , all of which were received with the customary honours . Bro . Page then gave " The Health of the W . M ., "as a brother who is highly-esteemed among the brethren of the lodge , and who , . having worked his way through the various offices step by step to the top , is in every way worthy of the honour the lodge has conferred on

him—the highest honour the lodge has it in its power to bestow—as a brother under whose guidance and command Mailing Abbey Lodge must necessarily prosper . The Chairman , on rising to respond , met with an enthusiastic reception . He heartily thanked Bro . Page for the kind way in which he had submitted his name to thc brethren , and as heartily thanked the brethren for the manner in which they

had received it . He felt that he really did not deserve half the kind words Bro . Page had been pleased to say in respect to him , yet he was assured the brethren would believe him when he said it was his full determination to endeavour to perform the duties of the office to the best of his ability . He quite understood thc responsibility of the duties he had undertaken , and , were it not that he knew hc might

rely on receiving from the brethren of the lodge the same expression of good feeling and indulgence during his year of oflice as he bad always experienced from them hitherto , he would have hesitated before accepting the high honour conferred upon him , feeling himself quite inadequate to succeed the many and more illustrious brethren who had

preceded him , brethren who , from their social position and attainments , had added so much lustre and prestige to Mailing Abbey 1-odge . He assured the brethren he would do his best to carry out the Masonic duties pertaining to the office in such a manner that at the end of the year none would regret the proceedings of that day . The W . M . then craved the attention of the brethren for

a few moments , that he might , before he sat down , perform the very pleasing duty thrust upon him by the brethren and thc high office to which they had elected him . It was to him , personally , a very pleasurable duty , and his only regret was that he felt he was not able to make the presentation on their behalf with that eloquence which the occasion required . Then , addressing Bio . Page , the W . M .

said : It has long been felt by the brethren of Mailing Abbey Lodge that the time has arrived when the many and valuable services you have , in many ways , rendered to the lodge , and the high esteem in which you are so justly held by the brethren , should be marked in .. substantial manner . I have , therefore , very great pleasure , Bro . Page , in offering for your acceptance the silver salver which I now

present to you in the name of the brethren of Mailing Abbey Lodge . Allow me to supplement what 1 have already said by stating that owing to the short length of time which we who were deputed to make all the necessary arrangements for this presentation to-day had at our disposal , it was necessary to some extent to anticipate the amount of thc subscriptions . It will be very gratifying to you to learn that

our anticipations were far exceeded , and wc arc , therefore , able to present to you this silver sugar basin and sifter , and beg you will accept it as a present of the brethren of Mailing Abbey Lodge to Mrs . Pajj _ . We trust you will regard these gifts , not for their intrinsic value , but as a mark of the brotherly love and high esteem of the brethren of Mailing Abbey Lodge . Brethren , I therefore now ask you to drink "The Health of Bro . Page , " wishing him many

years of health and happiness . Thc salver bore the following inscription : — " Mailing Abbey Ixjdge , 10 G 3 . Presented to Bro . W . Page , P . M ., P . P . G . J . W ., in grateful recognition of his many years valued services as honorary Secretary . June iG , 1 SS 0 . " The toast was given and received with the customary honours . Bro . Page , who on rising to respond was greeted most enthusiastically , thanked the brethren in his usual eloquent style for the handsome present just made to him , stating that hc could not thank them las he could wish , the

gift having come before him so unexpectedly that he was quite taken aback by this kind expression of good fellowship hythe brethren . Bro . A . Spenccrthen proposed "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Luck , " in an effective speech , which was snitably acknowledged by Bro . E . B . Smith , in the absence of Bro . Luck . 'The W . M . explained to the brethren thc peculiar circumstances which compelled Bro .

Luck to retire , and offered an apology for his absence , in accordance with his promise to Bro . Luck . The W . M . next gave "'The Health of the Installing Master , 13 ro . Wilmot , " in a brief speech , personally thanking him for his kindness in coining so far to perform those duties , and referred to thc impressive way in which he had given the ritual of the ceremony , and the effect it had on ' him ( the

W . M . ) , which must have been evident to the brethren generally . 'The toast was drunk as a bumper with thc usual honours . Bro . Wilmot suitably acknowledged thc compliment , and stated that it was a great pleasure to him to come to Mailing Abbey Lodge as installing Master , and that hc would always readily respond to their calls for a like purpose in the future . The W . M . then gave in succession

•*I hc Visiting Brethren , " " The Past Masters of Mailing Abbey Lodge , " "The Wardens , " and "Thc Junfor Officers , " all of which were duly honoured and responded to . The Tyler ' s toast was then given , and this concluded one of the happiest and most successful of the meetings of Mailing Abbey Lodge . We have becn desired to express the

deep thanks of the brethren to Bro . R . Clout , P . M . 72 , 507 , iofi 3 , the acting member of thc Dinner Committee , for the admirable way in which hc had evidently understood and provided for thc comfort and happiness of thc brethren on this occasion . The banquet was served in splendid style by Mr . H . dc Carteret , thc manager of the Mitre Hotel , Maidstone . '

BATTLE . —Abbey Lodge ( No . 11 S 4 ) . —There was a brave gathering of the members of the mystic tie assembled in the Grea * Hall of Battle Abbey over twelve years ago , when the Masonic banner was unfurled in the presence of Lord Pelham , the then Provincial Grand Master of Sussex , and a brilliant assemblage of brethren clothed in all the varied insignia of the ancient fraternity . Thc

warrant for the Abbey Lodge , which is signed by F ' arl de Grey and Ripon ( since raised to the Marquisate under thc style of Marquis of Ripon , and who has recently been appointed Viceroy of India ) , as Deputy Grand Master of English Freemasons—the late Earl Zetland being at that time Grand Master—is dated Jul y 10 th , 1 S 67 , " and directs that Benjamin Thorpe ( uncle of thc present 13 . H . Thorpe )

shall be the first W . M . ; John Albion Norman Thorpe ( usually known as Albion Thorpe ) the first S . W . ; and William Lamborn , the first J . W . The other brethren named on the warrant as founders of the lodge are Walter Horc , F . W . Ticehurst , Edwd . Kcnward , and George Till . 'There were , of course , several other brethren , mostly members of the Denvent'Lodge , No . 40

( Hastings ) , who joined , and gave thc new lodge material assistance during the earlier years of its existence . More genial members of the ancient brotherhood could not possibly be found between John o' Groat ' s house and the Lizard than the knights of the Mallet and Chisel , who were wont to assemble at the Swan , in the old town of Hastings , when Host Carswell conducted that famous

hostelry ; and the older brethren now look back with much pleasure to the pleasant meetings held there under thc Carswell regime . Among those present at thc opening of the Abbey Lodge , in addition to the names given above , we may mention the present respected D . Prov . CM ., Bro . John Henderson Scott , who was at that time Prov . S . G . W . ; Bros . John Howell , Prov . G . S . of W . ; Geo . Wellerd , P . Prov . G . D .

of C ; J . Dorman , C . VV . Duke , Dr . Trollope , G . Richards , Bourner , Mills , Pierce Egan , G . Wood , Grecnway , and others , making some 150 in all . Of the founders of the lodge , and of those present at the consecration ceremony , many have gone to that bourne from whence no traveller returns ; some are scattered in distant lands , while , after a lapse of only twelve years , not many remain amongst us .

H . H . 'Thorpe , or " Brother Ben , " as hcis familiarly spoken of , is hale and hearty , and takes as great an interest in the affairs of the lodge as ever ; and Bro . Lamborn is still as energetic and hard-working a Mason as he always was ; while Bro . C . W . Duke undertakes the arduous task of Secretary . The Liberal Member for Hastings , Bro . Thomas Brassey , M . P ., became a joining member of the lodce in

iSGS , and has kept his name on the roll ever since . Bro ' Walter Hore , who was the first 'Treasurer , held that post for some time , till compelled to resign on account of illhealth , and was succeeded in that oflice by Bro . Wells , who still ho'ds that responsible position . Thc place of meeting named in the warrant is given as G 2 , High-street , Battle . Thc lodge , however , never met there , as prior to

the first regular meeting , No . G , High-street , was sanctioned by thc authorities instead , at which place the lodge continued to hold its meetings till it was removed to the Masonic Rooms , which form part of thc block of buildings known as the Drill Hall . Difficulty having been experienced by the Hastings brethren in attending the meetings of th Abbey Lodge , application was made in 1 S 76 to the director

of the South-Eastern Railway to allow the S . 55 p . m . down train to call at Battle on Iodide nights . 'This request was readily complied with by the railwayauthorities , and ata later date the company decided that the last down train should stop at Battle every evening . On the roll of Past Masters who still are active members of the lodge are the names of Bro . W . Lamborn , B . II . Thorpe , C . W .

Duke , H . G . F . Wells , C . R . Chandler , and C . D . Jones , the former of whom bas twice occupied the chair of the lodge with great credit , and among these brethren will be found some of the best working Masons in Sussex . Twelve months ago the Provincial Grand Master for Sussex , Sir W . W . Burrell , Bart ., M . P ., and the Provincial Officers honoured the lodge with their presence on the occasion of the installation of Bro . William Lamborn as

W . M . for the second time . Bro . E . R . Clarke , who was on Thursday installed as W . M ., first saw light in the Abbey Lodge on September 17 th , 1875 , was passed October 21 st , 1 S 75 , and raised to the Master Masons' Degree on November iSth , 1 S 77 ; J . W . on January 17 th , 1 S 7 S ; and S . W . on June 19 th , 1 S 79 . At the meeting of the lodge on April 19 th , 1 S 77 , Bro . VVomersIey , in the name of Bro . Clarke , who was absent through ill-health , presented a handsomel y bound volume of the Sacred Law to the lodge . Ill-health has too often deprived the lodge of Bro . Clarke ' s presence . Whenever able to do so , that brother has always put in an

In consequence of other engagements mine hostess of the Crown was unable to accommodate the lodge , and , thc

brethren adjourned to a neighbouring hostelry , the Blackfriars , where a sumptuous banquet was served , and under the presidency of . the newly-installed W . M . proved in every respect an immense success . The popularity of Bro . Ormerod , especially in the musical and dramatic world , attracted a galaxy of talent rarely equalled . The utmost satisfaction was expressed with the manner in which the hostess , Mrs . Porter ( widow of a highlyesteemed brother ) , attended to thc wants and comforts of her guests . WEST MALLING . —Mailing Abbey Lodge ( No . 10 G 3 ) . —The annual meeting of this lodge for the installation of thc Worshipful Master for the ensuing year

was held at the Bear Hotel , on Wednesday , the 16 th inst . There was a good attendance of the brethren and visitors present , including the following : Bros . E . T . Luck , F . J . C . May , E . Pointer 'The lodge was opened in the usual form by Bro . E . T . Luck , W . Si ., who afterwards vacated the chair , which was then occupied by the Installing Master , Bro . B . Sidney

Wilmot , P . M ., P . G . R . Bro . Francis J . C May , the W . M . elect , who had becn unanimously elected to ( ill that office at the previous meeting of thc lodge , was then presented by Bro .
