. manner , the lodge being opened accordingly . The lodge resumed to the First Degree , and the W . M . having risen for the second time it was proposed , seconded , and carried unanimously , that ISro . ' Lovell , the S . W ., occupy the chair at the next meeting . The W j'L elect appointed the officers in rotation . In consequence of the death of the Treasurer , Bro . J . Mailer , P . M ., who had filled that office since the foundation of the lodge , Bro . Linzell proposed , and Bro . Fidler seconded , that Bro . J . be elected to that officeBoth and

Garrod , P . M . 754 , . proposer seconder testified as to the able support Bro . Garrod had given to the lodge for many years , seven of which he had been their Secre . tary and through whose exertions at that time brought the lodge into a flourishing condition . Bro . Everdell , the Preceptor , also supported the proposition , feeling well assured that by conferring the Xreasurership on Bro . Garrod their confidence would n > it be mislaced ; but on the contrary—the duties would be carried out

faithp fully and efficiently . The resolution was carried unanimously . Bro . Garrod thanked the brethren for the great honour they had done him , and said it would be his earnest desire to discharge the duties in a manner that would maintain the confidence they had reposed in him . Bro . C . T . Knightly having kindly presented the lodge with new

collars , Bro . Garrod proposed that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to Bro . Knightly for his handsome gift , and he ( Bro . Garrod ) felt assured the brethren would prize the gift more highly when he informed them those collars were made by Mrs . Knightly , who always took such a great interest in all that concerned Freemasonry . The proposition was seconded by Bro . Linzell , and carried with

acclamation . Bro . Knightlv thanked the brethren for their kind expressions and also for the kindly manner in which the name of Mrs . Kn ghtly had been mentioned , who he could safely say took a real pleasure in what she had done , and when he informed her how much the collars were appreciated by the lodge he knew she would be highly pleased and more than doubly paid for the little trouble she had taken . It was also proposed , seconded , and carried unanimously , that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to Bro . Binnie , the Hon . Secretary , for regildine and attaching the jewels to the

new collars . Bro . Binnie briefly thanked the brethren for the kind manner in which they had mentioned his name , and assured them he took a real pleasure in the small service he had done . No other Masonic business offering , the lodge was closed .

SOUTHERN STAR LODGE ( No . 11 J 8 ) . —The annual banquet of this lodge of instruction was held at the Sir Sidney Smith , Chester-street , Kennington , on Thursday , the 17 th inst . The Preceptor , Bro . Wise , P . M . 1158 , presided , and there was a numerous attendance of brethren , who heartily enjoyed the excellent banquet served by the host , Bro . R . Caley , The usual toasts were duly honoured , Bro . Hartley , W . M . 1986 , Sec , responded for " The Lodge . " During the evening a very good selection of songs and recitations were performed . Bro . Sarjeant ably officiated with the accompaniments .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . —A meeting of this lodge of instruction was held at Masons' Hall , Masons ' -avenue , BasinghalUstreet , E . C , on Thursday , the 17 th inst . Present : Bros . . I . K . Pitt , W . M . ; Rush , S . W . ; Hills , J . W . ; Jardine , S . D . ; Whitehouse , J . D . ; Eiselmann , l . G , ; James Stevens , P . M . and Preceptor ; W . Ball , Hon . Sec . ; and numerous other brethren . The lodge was opened in the Three Degrees , and the ceremony of raisinir was excellently rehearsed by the W . M ., Bro . Pitt , the

explanation of the tracing board of the Degree and of several , portions of the ceremonial being given by the Preceptor . The lodge was closed to the First Degree , when a communication from Bro . Paddle , P . M . and Treas ., excusing his absence or . account of the serious illness of his wife , was read , and the sympathy of the brethren was earnestly accorded to that worthy brother . The arrangements for the smoking concert on the 34 th inst . were competed , and the occasion bids fair to prove a great success . The lod ge was then closed .

( manufactured by Comp . George Kenning ) , in token of the esteem in which he is held , and as a slight acknowledgment of the services he had rendered to the chapter during the last two years . Comp . Rix suitably acknowledged the compliment , and heartily thanked Comp . Gowers and the companions of the chapter for the kindly recognition of

his services . The chapter was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a banquet under the presidency of the M . E . Z ., Comp . T . H . Gowers . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and responded to , and a very agreeable and pleasant evening was spent .

TWICKENHAM . —Era Chapter ( No . 1423 ) . — This provincial chapter met at the Albany Hotel , on the 12 th inst ., when there were present , among others , Comps . G . L . Wingate , M . E . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken on behalf of Bro . Peat , Sec . 1656 , and , it proving to be unanimous , he was exalted as a Royal Arch Mason by Comp . T . C . Walls . Comps . G . Elliott and C . Stevens were then respectivel y installed as H . and J . by Comp . H . Higgins , assisted by Comps . Walls , Wingate , and Kohler . Perceval , P . J . Davies , T . Glass , A . H . Scurrah , and G . Mordey , all of whom expressed their thanks and determination to attend , commenting very favourably upon the various appointments of the chapter , and congratulated the executive officers upon the success of their exertions . Telegrams were received from Comps . Whittley and Poppleston expressing regret at their inability to attend . After " Hearty good wishes " the chapter was closed .

M ., the Past Masters , officers , and brethren of 2 S 4—previous to his departure for

New Zealand , as a mark of their respect , affection , and esteem for him as a man and as a brother Mason . The address conveyed "The hearty good wishes" of the brethren of 284 , to Bro . W . J . Meek , P . M . 284 , and 199 , P . G . S , the Father , the 1 st W . M ., and one of the founders of the lodge . The Worshipful Master , Bro . A . G . Fidler , said : Bro .

Meek , we have great pleasure in presenting you with this slight souvenir of our affection and esteem for you , and trust that it will recall us to your memory in that far distant land to which you are going , but our pleasure is mingled with regret in thinking that we are parting from you , our first W . M ., our Father , and one of the founders of the lodge , and that we are bidding you an eternal good-bye . Bro .

Meek , you carry with you the affection and esteem of us all , and we trust the Grand Overseer of the Universe will have you in his good keeping . Bro Meek thanked the brethren , and said : W . Linzell proposed , and Bro . Fidler seconded , that Bro . J . be elected to that officeBoth and

Garrod , P . M . 754 , . proposer seconder testified as to the able support Bro . Garrod had given to the lodge for many years , seven of which he had been their Secre . tary and through whose exertions at that time brought the lodge into a flourishing condition . Bro . Everdell , the Preceptor , also supported the proposition , feeling well assured that by conferring the Xreasurership on Bro . Garrod their confidence would n > it be mislaced ; but on the contrary—the duties would be carried out

faithp fully and efficiently . The resolution was carried unanimously . Bro . Garrod thanked the brethren for the great honour they had done him , and said it would be his earnest desire to discharge the duties in a manner that would maintain the confidence they had reposed in him . Bro . C . T . Knightly having kindly presented the lodge with new

collars , Bro . Garrod proposed that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to Bro . Knightly for his handsome gift , and he ( Bro . Garrod ) felt assured the brethren would prize the gift more highly when he informed them those collars were made by Mrs . Knightly , who always took such a great interest in all that concerned Freemasonry . The proposition was seconded by Bro . Linzell , and carried with

acclamation . Bro . Knightlv thanked the brethren for their kind expressions and also for the kindly manner in which the name of Mrs . Kn ghtly had been mentioned , who he could safely say took a real pleasure in what she had done , and when he informed her how much the collars were appreciated by the lodge he knew she would be highly pleased and more than doubly paid for the little trouble she had taken . It was also proposed , seconded , and carried unanimously , that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to Bro . Binnie , the Hon . Secretary , for regildine and attaching the jewels to the

new collars . Bro . Binnie briefly thanked the brethren for the kind manner in which they had mentioned his name , and assured them he took a real pleasure in the small service he had done . No other Masonic business offering , the lodge was closed .

SOUTHERN STAR LODGE ( No . 11 J 8 ) . —The annual banquet of this lodge of instruction was held at the Sir Sidney Smith , Chester-street , Kennington , on Thursday , the 17 th inst . The Preceptor , Bro . Wise , P . M . 1158 , presided , and there was a numerous attendance of brethren , who heartily enjoyed the excellent banquet served by the host , Bro . R . Caley , The usual toasts were duly honoured , Bro . Hartley , W . M . 1986 , Sec , responded for " The Lodge . " During the evening a very good selection of songs and recitations were performed . M . 199 , and P . M . 284 , and P . G . Stwd , with an egg tray ' holding six egg cups , and spoons , and also two muffineers , and an address signed by the W . M ., the Past Masters , officers , and brethren of 2 S 4—previous to his departure for

New Zealand , as a mark of their respect , affection , and esteem for him as a man and as a brother Mason . The address conveyed "The hearty good wishes" of the brethren of 284 , to Bro . W . J . Meek , P . M . 284 , and 199 , P . G . S , the Father , the 1 st W . M ., and one of the founders of the lodge . The Worshipful Master , Bro . A . G . Fidler , said : Bro .

Meek , we have great pleasure in presenting you with this slight souvenir of our affection and esteem for you , and trust that it will recall us to your memory in that far distant land to which you are going , but our pleasure is mingled with regret in thinking that we are parting from you , our first W . M ., our Father , and one of the founders of the lodge , and that we are bidding you an eternal good-bye . Bro .

Meek , you carry with you the affection and esteem of us all , and we trust the Grand Overseer of the Universe will have you in his good keeping . Bro Meek thanked the brethren , and said : W . Zealand . I am having about three dozen photographs done in full Masonic costume which 1 shall send to you , W . M ., and to Bro . Major Dunbar to distribute for me amongst the brethren , and 1 hope the brethren will give me their photos' to put in my album , not that 1 shall want them to recall you to my memory , for brethren , I shall never forget you . bless you all . I thank you all for your great kindness to me ever since Ihave been in the lodge . You have spoken of me , W . M ., in a way far above my merits , and I thank you for it . May we all meet , brethren , in the Grand Lodge above , and _ may we each receive a white stone on which shall be written a name which no man knoweth save he who receiveth it .
