Professor Giuseppe Novi has discovered , not far from Herculaneum , the ruins of some ancient baths , covered over with ashes and lava to the depth of 10 m . The explorations so far made show it to have been a sumptuous

establishment , with mosaics and other artistic decorations . The King of Portugal has conferred upon Air . Henry IT . Howorth , the author of the " History of the Alongols , " the cross of the Order of St . James . childi en disport themselves delightfully , whilst others sit or lie about in various stages of undress . Near the centre one fair dame lies extended on soft cushions without any pretence of covering , while a number of charming little naked children play around her . Thc Athenteum states thafc among Air . E . B . Jones ' s contributions to the Grosvenor Gallery Exhibition will be a scries of superbly designed and exquisitely coloured cartoons for thc stained glass in several churches .

At this season of good cheer , when benevolence is so nobly exerted that some sham philanthropists arc heard to whisper that thc poor should pray for blessings to bc further showered on thc rich , I never hear one of these beings indulge in their inanities without thinking of an

incident which took place before the battle of Trafalgar , and which is too good to sink into obscurity . The first lieutenant of the Revenge was going round the ship to see that all hands were at quarters , as the British vessels were bearing down to attack the combined licet , when he

observed a tar kneeling at the side of his gun . Surprised and curious , he asked the man if he was afraid . "Afraid I " answered Jack with disdain , " No !
