A resolution regarding the lodge banner was passed , after which llro . John Morton was elected VV . M . and Bro . Ellis , P . M ., Treas . for the ensuing year ; the election of Tyler was deferred until the next meeting . A joining member was proposed and apnlogies tendered for the absence of a

number of Ihe brethren , after which " Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the visitors , and the lodge was closed . After refreshments , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . In responding for "The Visitors , " Bro . O . ldy . P . M . 3 S 7 , Prov . A . G . D . C , while thanking the brethren for the cordial reception the visitors hid received , stated that he occupied a somewhat-peculiar position , inasmuch as he was called upon to respond to a

toast , of which , owing to his unfortunate deafness , he had not heard a single word of the remarks of the proposer ; at the same time , from past experience he could understand . the kindly manner in which the toast had been proposed . Although deaf , his eyesight was remarkably good , and he was pleased with the proceedings in the lodge . Bro . Oddy remarked that he had recently conferred the Third Degree in his own lodge , but had only heard the voice of the candidate in the O . B . during the entire ceremony . Several other toasts followed . Bros . Nicholl , Kinder , Dirrance , Townend , Dr . Lodge , and Last contributed songs , slos , and recitations to the harmony of the evening .

The chapter was regularly opened by the Principals and Past Principals . The minutes of the previous weekly convocation were read arid confirmed . The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed , Comp . The monthly meeting of the Board of Benevolence was held on Wednesday evening , at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . f . H . Matthews , President of the Board , occupied the President ' s chair ; Bro . D . D . Mercer , Senior Vice-President , and Bro . C . A . Cottebrune , Junior Vice-President . took their usual places ; Bros . E . Letchworth , G . Sec . ; W . Dodd , G . S . Recknell , and H . Sadler , represented the Grand Secretary ' s department . The other members present were Bros . George

B . Chapman , Robert Case , George R . Langley , Henry Garrod , W . Fisher , George Everett , George Graveley , E . C . Mulvey , T . H . Goldschmidt , William Vincent Robert A . Gowan , Walter Martin , James Bunker , O . Limare , J . Harrison , T . J . Mercer , C . H . Webb , H . W . Wybourn , Baron D . Barnett , Arthur Williams , Thomas Whitford , F . J . The Board first confirmed recommendations to the Grand Master made al last monthly meeting that grants should be made to the amount of £ 395 . There were 26 cases on the new list , weich were qualified through lodges in the London district , and at Calcutta , Holrr . firth , Hull , Minehead , Hong Kong , Gloucester , Rainham , Birmingham , Kidderminster , Preston , Liverpool , Enfield , Stonehouse ,

Bristol , Balsall Heath , Hatfield , and Rochdale . Out of these cases six were deferred , the requirements of the Board not having been complied with . The remainder were relieved with a total sum of , £ 685 . One recommendation was made to Grand Lodge for . £ 200 , and two cases were recommended for £ 50 each . To the Grand Master two cases were recommended for ^ 40 each , and five for , £ 30 each . The remaining cases were granted . £ 15 , . £ 10 , and £ 5 each .

Obituary .

BRO . JAMES S . NAISH , P . M . 1833 . On Monday , the 13 th inst ., the funeral of the late Bro . James Smith Naish took p lace amidst many manifestations of mourning and regret . The bod y had been previously removed to the residence of deceased's father , Glengariff , Wellington Park , Chiton , and the funeral took place from there , the first portion of the service , which was quite plain , being held at St . Saviour ' s Church , Redland , where

the Rev . J . W . Firth , curate , conducted the service and also the closing portions at Arno's Vale Cemetery , where deceased was interred . The body was enclosed in an inner shell of elm , with outer coffin of oak , which bore the inscription — " James Smith Naish , died 16 th September , 1897 , aged 39 years . " The coffin , which was covered with lovely floral tokens of admiration and affection , was conveyed in an open funeral car , and there were seven mourning coaches , the

following being the mourners : First carriage : Mr . Henry Naish ( father ) , Mrs . J . S . Naish ( widow ) , Miss Ethel Naish and Miss Naish ( sisters . ) Second carriage : Miss F . Naish , Miss M . Naish ( daughters ) , Mr . H . VV . Naish ( brother ) , Mrs . H . W . Naish ( sister-in-law ) , and Mr . G . Naish ( brother . ) Third carriage : Mr . J . Phelps , Mr . G . Phelps , Mr . W . Phelps , and Mr . D . Beak . Fourth carriage : Mrs . Rogers , Mr . Pearce , Mr . Overbury , and Mr . H . Scull . Fifth carriage : Mr . A .

Lewis , Mr . Hennessey , Mr . Murphy , and Mr . Calcott . Sixth carriage : Mr . Clancy , Mr . Dix , and Mr . Rawle . Seventh carriage : Mr . Fielding , Mr . Griffin , Mr . Sellick , and Mr . Gaule . Amongst those in the church were Councillors Swaish and Elkins , as representing the St . Philip and Jacob South Ward of the Bristol Town Council , for which deceased was the third and junior member . Enroute to the cemetery and at Arno ' s Vale there were others , including the

emp loyes of the deceased , as well as brethren of the Craft , who assembled to pay their last respects . Bro . Naish was W . M . of the St . Keyna Lodge , No . 1833 , in the year iSyo , and was P . Prov . G . Std . Br . in the Province of Somerset . He was held in hig h esteem for his sterling work in the Craft , and was much respected by his brethren and friends . His early decease is a matter of sincere regret . Oar sympathy is tendered to his widow and relatives .

BRO . WILLIAM PAAS , P . M . 28 . Very general regret will be felt at the announcement of the death , on the i ( jth instant , of Bro . William Paas , aged 71 years . For some time past , failing health had rendered it impossible for Bro . Paas to take an active part in Masonry ; but in his day he had done good service . lie was a P . M . and P . Z . of the Old King ' s Anns Lodge and Chapter , No . jS , and had been a very strenuous supported of our institutions .

The Board first confirmed recommendations to the Grand Master made al last monthly meeting that grants should be made to the amount of £ 395 . There were 26 cases on the new list , weich were qualified through lodges in the London district , and at Calcutta , Holrr . firth , Hull , Minehead , Hong Kong , Gloucester , Rainham , Birmingham , Kidderminster , Preston , Liverpool , Enfield , Stonehouse ,

Bristol , Balsall Heath , Hatfield , and Rochdale . Out of these cases six were deferred , the requirements of the Board not having been complied with . The remainder were relieved with a total sum of , £ 685 . One recommendation was made to Grand Lodge for . £ 200 , and two cases were recommended for £ 50 each . To the Grand Master two cases were recommended for ^ 40 each , and five for , £ 30 each . The remaining cases were granted . £ 15 , . £ 10 , and £ 5 each .

BRO . JAMES S . NAISH , P . M . 1833 . On Monday , the 13 th inst ., the funeral of the late Bro . James Smith Naish took p lace amidst many manifestations of mourning and regret . The bod y had been previously removed to the residence of deceased's father , Glengariff , Wellington Park , Chiton , and the funeral took place from there , the first portion of the service , which was quite plain , being held at St . Saviour ' s Church , Redland , where

the Rev . J . W . Firth , curate , conducted the service and also the closing portions at Arno's Vale Cemetery , where deceased was interred . The body was enclosed in an inner shell of elm , with outer coffin of oak , which bore the inscription — " James Smith Naish , died 16 th September , 1897 , aged 39 years . " The coffin , which was covered with lovely floral tokens of admiration and affection , was conveyed in an open funeral car , and there were seven mourning coaches , the

following being the mourners : First carriage : Mr . Henry Naish ( father ) , Mrs . J . S . Naish ( widow ) , Miss Ethel Naish and Miss Naish ( sisters . ) Second carriage : Miss F . Naish , Miss M . Naish ( daughters ) , Mr . H . VV . Naish ( brother ) , Mrs . H . W . Naish ( sister-in-law ) , and Mr . G . Naish ( brother . ) Third carriage : Mr . J . Phelps , Mr . G . Phelps , Mr . W . Phelps , and Mr . D . Beak . Fourth carriage : Mrs . Rogers , Mr . Pearce , Mr . Overbury , and Mr . H . Scull . Fifth carriage : Mr . A .

Lewis , Mr . Hennessey , Mr . Murphy , and Mr . Calcott . Sixth carriage : Mr . Clancy , Mr . Dix , and Mr . Rawle . Seventh carriage : Mr . Fielding , Mr . Griffin , Mr . Sellick , and Mr . Gaule . Amongst those in the church were Councillors Swaish and Elkins , as representing the St . Philip and Jacob South Ward of the Bristol Town Council , for which deceased was the third and junior member . Enroute to the cemetery and at Arno ' s Vale there were others , including the

emp loyes of the deceased , as well as brethren of the Craft , who assembled to pay their last respects . Bro . Naish was W . M . of the St . Keyna Lodge , No . 1833 , in the year iSyo , and was P . Prov . G . Std . Br . in the Province of Somerset . He was held in hig h esteem for his sterling work in the Craft , and was much respected by his brethren and friends . His early decease is a matter of sincere regret . Oar sympathy is tendered to his widow and relatives .

BRO . WILLIAM PAAS , P . M . 28 . Very general regret will be felt at the announcement of the death , on the i ( jth instant , of Bro . William Paas , aged 71 years . For some time past , failing health had rendered it impossible for Bro . Paas to take an active part in Masonry ; but in his day he had done good service . lie was a P . M . and P . Z . of the Old King ' s Anns Lodge and Chapter , No . jS , and had been a very strenuous supported of our institutions .
