To the Editor of the " Freemason " Dear Sir and Brother , At this time when all minds seemed fixed on Jubilee celebrations it is to be hoped that those in sickness and distress in the East-end will not be overlooked , the very mention of festivities seem a mockery to those who lay
helpless and in want . There are some , no doubt , of our breihren and their families who would willingly help if brought in direct communication with such cases , and to those brethren I now appeal . Any sum , however small , most gratefully received , cast
off clothing ' , under-linen , lint , or soft pieces for dressings and bandages : potted and other nourishing foods , drinks , & c . Disinfectants ( so necessary now with the warm weather ) , or any other article suitable for the sick room , & c , thankfully received , and may be addressed to me at 49 , High-street , Shadwell , E . —Yours fraternally , R . ALBERT HALL MEETING—A CORRECTION . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Allow me to correct an error in the designation of the Earl of Rosslyn as given in your report of the Albert Hall Jubilee Celebration .
His lordship is not Depute Grand Master of Scotland . He is a Past Grand Master of Scotland , and was present on Ihe 13 th in his official capacity as representative to the Grand Lodge of England . In same report Lord Rosslyn is mentioned as occupying a place on the left of the throne . 734 ] THREE COMPASSES . Bro . Lane ' s reply to my query ( 645 ) is a refreshing experience . Answers to queries may not always be possible at the time , but when they are noted and remembered , as in this case , they deserve more than passing thanks . I am extremely grateful to Bro . Lane , and as a testimony of willingness to give information as it turns tip ( a peculiar
desideratum lor the real use of this column , as it seems to me ) he has my cordial thanks . I take note with pleasure of the fact of Bro . Oakley being identified with the Lodge Three Compasses ( or Carpenters' Arms—the same , of course , as Bro . Lane states ) in the ninth space of the
1725 Engraved List , and it will be satisfactory to Bro . Lane to learn that it settles all I wished to know in making the enquiry in January , 1 SS 6 ( No . 645 ) . I am inclined to the "Three Compasses , " and as Bro . Lane calls it , " No . 11 , " Queen ' s Head , in Knaves Acre , were one and the same lodge , meeting at a different hostel . J . Without entering into the question of desirability , whether we are any more justified in claiming 4000 or 4004 years now , than when first claimed , except by usage ; I agree with Bro . Hughan ( 731 ) that 4000 should be added to A . D . for the Year of Light . To start a new system is , as Bro . Hughan sta ' . es , very absurd . The Grand Chapter appears to have first used 4004 , and certificates of the
R . A . formerly bore that addition ; but lhe custom was long ago very properly discontinued . As neither Grand Lodge nor Grand Chapter use 4004 , it would seem there need be no difficulty whatever now . My unweaiied friend and brother has , I hope , conclusively settled what should be , and really is , the modern usage . Lane ' s note , the arms of the Carpenters' Company were specially applicable to the early builders or constructors of houses , at the time when most ediikts were built of timber . The grant of arms was made to the Worshipful Fellowship of Carpenters in 6 th Edw . IV ., A . D . 14 G 6 , their Charter of Incorporation as a
Livery Company not being granred till A . D . 1477 . Their armorial bearings are on a field silver , sable a chevron engrailed , three compasses also sable . ( See W . W . Pocock ' s most interesting repiint of "Jupp ' s Historical Account of the Carpenters' Company . Th « Masons'
Company was not chartered till after the fire of London—that is , A . D . 1677—their arms being three castles—symbols of solidity , and a compass extended on a chevron , buildings being then of a more solid and less ccmbuotile character , lt is obvious that three compasses without the engrailed chevron do not represent the Carpenters' Arms . M ., Treasurer , who , on rising to propose the first toast , that of " Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen , " did so in a most able manner , quite becoming that most auspicious season , that of the jubilee of her most prosperous reign , which was received in a most loyal and enthusiastic manner by all present .
The brethren were delighted with some good singing by several of the members , more especially from Bro . Pounds , who vvas twice encored , his singing being most excellent , the members congratulating themselves upon the accession of such a talented brother to the lodge . A most enjoyable evening was spent , although the brethren much regretted the absence of the W . M ., as also the I . P . M ., Bio . Dopson .

Mullen , t \ M ., prior to his departure to America , when in presence of some 60 odd brethren he was presented with an illuminated address and purse of gold , expressive of
their esteem and regard , and , referring to the happy nature of the gathering , said it was one that would live long in the memory of the brethren present on the occasion . The proposition was seconded , and carried unanimously . Bro . Welsman , P . M ., then alluded to the retirement of Bro . C Crabtree , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., from the office of Secretary , afler nine years' zealous service , but who had shown
bis unabated interest in the lodge ' s welfare by accepting the office of Treasurer , to which he had been unanimously elected , and who had rendered such good service as to merit the esteem and affection of h s brethren , and , in deference to the wishes of the brethren , begged formally to propose that a suitable address be prepared for presentation to Bro . Crabtree at the next regular lodge meeting .
Bro . Jas . Wright , P . M ., in seconding the proposition , referred to the zeal Bro . Crabtree had evinced for the lodge ' s welfare for many years past , and felt sure that he would prize such an expression of goodwill , esteem , and affection of his brethren more highly than if it had been shown in any other or more substantial manner . The resolution , on
being put by the VV . M ., was carried enthusiastically . At the conclusion of business the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given by the W . M . and duly henjured , the musical poition of the programme being admirabl y rendered by Bros . Chas . Blagboro , J . P . Priestley , and others .

Other lodge business having been transacted , the brethren adjourned to a very nice banquet , presided over by Bro . G . Butt , P . M ., Treasurer , who , on rising to propose the first toast , that of " Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen , " did so in a most able manner , quite becoming that most auspicious season , that of the jubilee of her most prosperous reign , which was received in a most loyal and enthusiastic manner by all present .
The brethren were delighted with some good singing by several of the members , more especially from Bro . Pounds , who vvas twice encored , his singing being most excellent , the members congratulating themselves upon the accession of such a talented brother to the lodge . A most enjoyable evening was spent , although the brethren much regretted the absence of the W . M ., as also the I . P . M ., Bio . Dopson .

Mullen , t \ M ., prior to his departure to America , when in presence of some 60 odd brethren he was presented with an illuminated address and purse of gold , expressive of
their esteem and regard , and , referring to the happy nature of the gathering , said it was one that would live long in the memory of the brethren present on the occasion . The proposition was seconded , and carried unanimously . Bro . Welsman , P . M ., then alluded to the retirement of Bro . C Crabtree , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., from the office of Secretary , afler nine years' zealous service , but who had shown
bis unabated interest in the lodge ' s welfare by accepting the office of Treasurer , to which he had been unanimously elected , and who had rendered such good service as to merit the esteem and affection of h s brethren , and , in deference to the wishes of the brethren , begged formally to propose that a suitable address be prepared for presentation to Bro . Crabtree at the next regular lodge meeting .
Bro . Jas . Wright , P . M ., in seconding the proposition , referred to the zeal Bro . Crabtree had evinced for the lodge ' s welfare for many years past , and felt sure that he would prize such an expression of goodwill , esteem , and affection of his brethren more highly than if it had been shown in any other or more substantial manner . The resolution , on
being put by the VV . M ., was carried enthusiastically . At the conclusion of business the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given by the W . M . and duly henjured , the musical poition of the programme being admirabl y rendered by Bros . Chas . Blagboro , J . P . Priestley , and others .
