Sir Knight J . R . Carter had been a Mason of some standing in othei degrees of Freemasonry , and no doubt would shine io the Templar Degree . Unfortu nately , he had been ill for some time past , but , happily , his health was returning tc him .
The E . P ., in reply , briefly said that no one could more appreciate the kindness of lhe membeis of the ( Id Mount Calvary Preceptory in placing him at their head than he did . H s health gave way a short time since , and he had beer , able to ( give but little time to Masonic work . However , he hoped that the prosperity of the preceptory would improve and that he should leave the finances in a better condition than he found them .

"The Health of the Installee , " followed . Sir Knight Sherrin , in reply , expressed his thanks in the first place to his proposer and seconder . He had taken a great pleasure in Freemasonry and its institutions . He was young and ambitious . He hoped to attain success in all grades of the Fraternity , and if he did not succeed it would not be for the want of trying . The toast of "The Past Preceptors" was responded to by Sir Knights Stewart , Driver , and Lardner , and that of " The Officers , " by Sir Knights Haysom , Fisher , and Roberts .
During the evening Sir Knights Egbert Roberts , W . Fisher , and F . W . Driver , instrumentally , vocally , and in declamation entertained the members . The last named recited for the first time an original dramatic poem entitled " Repaid . "

No opportunity is ever missed by the Managing Committee and Secretary of this Institution of affording the annuitants in residence at Croydon an afternoon ' s or evening ' s pleasure , the most recent occasion having been on Thursday , the 16 th instant , when the Royal Nubian Minstrels , a troupe or crowd of amateurs under Dr . Dorin , which , by its gratuitous entertainments in behalf of deserving Charitable Institutions , has been the means of raising some thousands of pounds during the last few years , gave one of their admirable performances in the hall of the Institution . A programme of sentimental and comic songs was given by
Messrs . George , Lyndhurst , Stanley , Hastings , W . H . May , and Cressy , and Master Hawkins ; while Part II . was taken up with instrumental music and a lecture by Mr . W . H . May , the bone solo by Mr . Cressy and the swinging zither by Mr . Gaze being marvellous performances . The entertainment from beginning to end was the great success it deserved to be , each successive member being highly appreciated and heartily applauded . A word of praise must also be given to Mr . Ernest Renton , musical director , and Mr . Horace Gilbert , stage manager , for the able manner in which they fulfilled their respective duties .
