the position of rate collector for Frankfort Ward , Plymouth , and on the death of the late Mr . J . S . Pike , in 1 SS 1 , he was appointed Registrar of Births and Deaths of the St . Andrew ' s sub-district , a position which he filled with great fidelity up to the time of his death . For 30 years Bro . Barter was an active member of the Craft , and as Charity Steward of the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 1247 , of which he was . 1 P . M ., rendered very valuable service for many years . These services were the

recognised about two years ago by the Prov . G . M . of Devonshire ( Bro . Hon . Sir Stafford Northcote , M . P . ) appointing him as P . A . G . D . C . Amongst Masons generally Bro . Barter was held in the highest esteem . He was a worthy member of the Order , who worked hard on behalf of the Charities , and he enjoyed the personal friendship of many of the leading citizens of the Three Towns . The funeral took place on Monday , when the brethren attended in large numbers . Bro . Barter leaves a widow and eight children .
