the toast . In these days he knew that words were very plentiful ; his words were few and poor , but such as they were from his heart , warm in sympathy with the dear old people in the Institution —( hear , hear , and cheers ) —warm in gratitude to the brethren and Stewards for the splendid donations which he believed had been made this year to the Institution , and warm in the appreciation of the kindly welcome they had given him that evening . ( Hear ,

hear ) Their thoughts this evening were with the aged men and the widows of Freemasons , and their heartfelt wishes that these brethren ' s and widows ' lives might be peaceful and happy . ( Cheers . ) He had the privilege of visiting the Institution at Croydon on Tuesday , and being received by his friends on the Council , who treated him most hospitably and introduced him to some dear old ladies who were there in their homes . He made friends

with all of them —( laughter)—but he did not make love to them all , because Bro . James Terry was there . ( Renewed laughter . ) But he certainly felt that if ever he came to be broken up he should certainly ask the brethren to give him their votes that he might inhabit in his last days two of those charming rooms at Croydon . He would just say a few words , if it would not bother the brethren , as to the Male Fund . This branch of the

Institution was founded in 1 S 42 by Grand Lodge under the auspices of their Most Worship ful Grand Master the Duke of Sussex , and since that time it had maintained 970 men . At the last election there were 245 widows on it who were receiving £ _ 2 per annum , making ^ , 7840 , and 34 widows who received for five years halt their late husbands' annuities ,

making ff & o . The permanent income of that branch of the Fund was ^ 2813 , leaving a deficit of ^ 5657 10 be made up by donations and subscriptions . There were 79 candidates for election in May , and only 12 vacancies . At the Institution at Croydon there was accommodation for 32 residents , who had each two rooms rent free , coals during the winter months , gas , and medical attendance . What a blessing to know that these dear old

people had a comfortable home in their old age ! They had no anxiety , no coal bills , no tax collectors pulling at their doors , and quite right that that should be so , for after all , as Bro . Terry said humorously , if it was not for the old men and old women there would be no boys or girls . But what a happy thing it was for the brethren to feel they could do some good ! The happy man was one who tried to make others happy , who was ready to

join them in thtir pleasures and sympathise with them when they were in trouble . Those were the principles of Masonry , and the earnest wish of all the brethren was that this Institution might flourish and be a blessing , not only to those who received , but to those who gave . ( Hear , hear . ) But all this could not be carried on without organisation , and he felt that their thanks were due to Bro . Terry —( loud applause)—for the years he had

worked for this Institution , for the tact and ability and kindness that he had exercised in carrying out his most arduous duties . ( Cheers . ) He ( Lord Llangattock ) was sure that years hence , when Bro . Terry had crossed the bar , his name would remain beloved , honoured , and respected , and as that of one of the greatest benefactors to this Benevolent Institution . ( "Hear , hear " and cheers . ) Only one word more

" 'Tis good to be merry and wise , 'Tis good to be honest and true , 'Tis good to be merry With noble James Terry So give him the thanks that are due . " ( Laughter . )

Bro , J . A . FARNFIELD , Treas ., acknowledged the toast . He said he thanked the Chairman for the kind manner in which he had advanced the interests cf the Institution . It was his ( Bro . What the Chairman had said about the kind hearty feeling for the distresses of others was amply shown by the genial manner that he entered into the cares and sorrows , if

As the Chairman had said , he could wish lor nothing moie than , if adversity should visit him , to live with those pec pie in those charming apartments . There might have been fiction in that . Possibly , when Lord Llangattock had to turn out and cleam his own 100 m he mig ht not feel that delight . ( Laughter . ) When Bro . Terry announced the li ts he hoped the grand total would bs such as to relieve the

minds ol the Cummktee of Management of all anxiety for the coming year . During last year the widows had been in very low water indeed . The sums received fiom Grand Lodge had been applied to the Widows * Fund to pay the Commi tie ' s way , and they only hoped that when the lists were announced a large portion ol the money would be given to that branch of the Institution because the present year was the Jubilee of the Fund and its needs required the money .
