Barbadian Freemasons Congratulate The Grand Master.

Sir James Shaw Hay , K . C . M . G . ( Governor of the Island ) . A subscription was at once taken up to cover cost of the following telegram : " District Grand Master to Prince of Wales . " Freemasons send heartiest congratulations to her Majesty on success Empire ' s Arms . " This was duly forwarded .

It is worthy of note that whilst in session the Dist . G . Secretary read inter alia from the Grand Lodge report the fact of the Grand Lodge having voted iooo guineas towards the war funds , the Dist . G . Lodge then voted 20 guineas towards the same object .

Scientific Lodge , No . 88 . ' Although it was but an ordinary monthly meeting on Monday , the 12 th inst ., there was ati unusually large muster of brethren in lodge , including a good many visitors . The W . M ., Bro . I' . J . Moden , did the initiation work in a very satisfactory manner . Then followed an animated discussion upon By-law 13 , which limits subscribing membership to the number of the lodge—SS . A proposal to erase this was rejected by a small majority . The feature of the evening was the toast of "The Visitors , " submitted by Bro . Oliver Papwoith , P . M .

The first response came from Bro . Sultan Mahommed Khan , of the Richard Eve Lodge , an advanced student now in residence at Christ ' s College , Cambridge . He told of his admission into Freemasonry , and spoke in high terms of its all-embracing character , irrespective of creed , caste , or race , and said it was his intention to introduce Freemasonry into Afghanistan . He then , in eloquent terms , referred to the good relations existing between the Ameer ot Afghanistan and Great Britain ' s statesmen , and

showed in what light the various rumours as to Russia ' s accredited aggression in the East should be viewed . It was a masterly speech by one who has been for 12 years Secretary of State to the Ameer , and the Sultan was not only listened to with rapt attention , but was frequently and heartily applauded , especially in those thrilling sentences which touched the Imperial instincts of the brethren . After the W . M . of No . 441 , and a brother from No . 2727 , had spoken ,

Bro . Thompson , of the Klip Drift Lodge , Ladysmith , South Africa , had a hearty reception , and in the course of his response , said that in a letter by the last mail he had been informed that their Masonic temple at Ladysmith had been destroyed by Boer shells .

The minutes of the regular lodge held February igth were read and confirmed . Bro . Henry Blennerhassett was passed to the Second Degree . Bro . Richard Sidney Ellis was elected a joining member . A complimentary dinner was proposed to be given in June to Bro . Rupert Smyth , the l . P . M ., and Mrs . " Smyth . In reply to the circular from Grand Lodge respecting the South African Fund , it was proposed to contribute the contentsof the Charity-box . The by-laws of the lodge were read by the Secretary , and the lodge was closed . The brethren dined together under the gavel of the W . M ., Bro . Ralph Langton .

Mistley Lodge , No . 2339 . The annual meeting of the above lodge was held at Manningtree , Essex , on Thursday , the 15 th inst ., when Bro . VV . G . Synnot , P . M . 255 , was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year , the ceremony being ably performed by Bro . J . R . Butler , P . M .. P . P . A . G . D . C . The officers for the year were appointed as follows : Bros . In submitting the toast of the evening— " The Worshipful Master "—Bro . E . T Cox , I . P . M ., said he could not adequately describe the various services rendered to the lodge by Bro . Baguley . He would , however , remind the brethren of the active part

their W . M . took in the steps which led to the foundation of the lodge , and of the admirable manner in which , during the first year , he carried out the duties of Secretary . Bro . Baguley had well earned the honour conferred upon him in being installed as their W . M . ; his heart and soul were in Masonic work , and he ( Bro . Cox ) was sure that at the close of that year the brethren would feel the lodge had had no better Worshipful Master than Bro . Baguley . ( Applause ) .

Bro . Baguley , who was warmly applauded on rising to respond , said he was not worthy of all Bro . Cox had said icspecting him . He would not trouble them with a long speech , but simply say that he would strive his utmost to maintain the prosperity of the lodge , and to promote the interests of Freemasonry in general . ( Applause ) . liro . J . Sears gave" The Worshipful Masters of the Lodges in the Province , " to which Bro . H . Manwaring replied .

The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed , after which Bro . Biiggs , W . M . elect , was presented by Bro . Watts , P . M ., acting D . C ., for installation . Bro . W . Briggs was then duly installed as VV . M . by Bro . Snelling , in an able manner . The W . M . then appointed and invested his officers az follows : Bros . ( already approved ) and Mr . G . M . Canham were then introduced into the lodge and initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M . in an able manner . The report of the Audit Committee having been received and adopted , it was proposed , by Bro . Scott , Treas ., seconded by Bro . Snelling , l . P . M ., and carried unanimously , that 10 guineas from the lodge funds be placed on Bro . Colsell ' s list , as representative of the lodge at the forthcoming Girls' Festival , and Bro . Colsell returned thanks . The W . M . then presented the I . P . M . with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel voted by the lodge as a mark of the esteem of the brethren for the able manner in which he had carried out his duties during his year of office .

The I . P . M . briefly returned thanks for the kindness of the brethren , after which the lodge was closed . At the banquet which took place afterwards the usual loyal toasts were in existing circumstances most cordially received and honoured , together with that of " The M . W . G . M . and other Grand Officers . " The I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The W . M ., " expressed the pleasure he felt in seeing him in the chair and occupying that position , for , although he had not been many years in Freemasonry , he had been a most diligent student of its mysteries , and he was confident he would make as good a Master as he had President of the Solictors' Managing Clerks' Association , from which that lodge had sprung .

The W . M ., in reply , thanked the Installing and I . P . M . for the very kind expressions he had used in proposing the toast , and the brethren for the manner in which they had received it . He had been looking forward to that night with keen anticipation , and no < unfortunately he was so unwell , that he felt he could not do justice to the toast ; but his thanks were from the depths of his heart , and he should not readily forget the kind

words spoken of him and the generosity of the brethren . In proposing the toast of " The Initiates / ' the W . M . said they were no strangers , for they had been known to most of the brethren for years past . Now they were brother Masons , and he was sure they would find they had done a good thing in becoming Freemasons . In time to come they would occupy some positions in the lodge , and eventually he hoped to see them occupying the position he occupied .

Bro . Morgan thanked the brethren for receiving him , and he felt from what he had seen of the ceremony he had gone through that he would not regret the step he had taken , and would in all respects endeavour to carry out the principles he had had pointed out to him . Bro . Canham , in expressing his thanks , said that he naturally felt somewhat nervous at having to reply to the toast . He thanked the brethren for the hearty wel ' come they had given him , and for admitting him into their ranks , and he would bear in

mind and act up to the promises he had made during the ceremony , so that none ot the brethren should feel it necessary to repent of their choice . The toast of "The I . P . M . and Installing Master" was well received by tbe brethren . The W . M ., in proposing it , remarked upon the arduous duties the I . P . M . had had to perform for the past year , and to some extent for the previous year . Bro . Snelling , I . P . M ., in reply , expressed his thanks to the brethren , and hoped he would long be spared to perform similar duties , to attend the lodge , and to wear the jewel presented to him during the evening .

In proposing the toast of " The Visitors , " the W . M . mentioned that the lodge was always pleased to receive visitors , and he hoped they would all carry away a kindly recollection of their visit to the Justinian Lodge . The toast was responded to by Bros . Vears , Hutchins , J ackson , Brown , Wright , and Geo . Briggs . That of" The Charities " was responded to by Bro . Colsell , J . W . The toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary " was responded to by those . officers , and that of " The Officers " by the S . W ., Bro . Bishop , and " The Stewards " by Bro . G . H . D . Edwards .

The Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . During the evening an excellent selection of music was given by Miss Emily Fox . croft , Miss Jessie Hotinc , Miss Maud Withers , and Bros . S . Edwards , Emlyn , Rogers , and Inder , under the direction of Bro . F . W . Briggs , Org . of the lodge , and son of the W . M ., assisted by Bro . Emerson .
