Masonic Notes .
The Grand Master ' s Lodge of Instruction for Mark Master Masons , which occupies the same relation to Mark Masonry as the Emulation Lodge of Improvement bears to the Craft , will hold its tenth annual festival at Mark Masons' Hall on the 9 th prox . The lecture of the Degree will be given by the Secretary , Bro . John Smith , while Bro . W . Vincent , the Preceptor , will fill the chair of W . M . The importance of this school of Masonry in connection with the Mark Degree in preserving a standard of working can scarcely be overrated , and we hope to see a large gathering . R . W . Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson has kindly consented to preside .
The voting papers of both the Girls' and Boys ' Schools are now in the hands of the Subscribers , and the elections will take place on Thursday , the 12 th April , for the Girls ' , and on Friday , the 13 th , for the
Boys' . The names of 40 candidates appear on the list of the Girls ' , four of which are last chances . These will doubtless commend themselves to the benevolence of the brethren who on several occasions have successfully taken up cases that were apparently without many friends or deficient in the necessary organisation .
The vacancies in the Girls' School are 22 , as against 15 in October last , while the candidates are only three in excess of that period . In the Boys' School the condition of things is still more favourable , there being 30 to be elected out of 43 candidates , there should , therefore , be no case of great urgency shut out from the benefits of the Institution at this election .
The Girls' list contains the names of 15 from London , and 20 from the Provinces , while five are described as both London and Provincial . The Boys' list contains 16 London cases , 23 Provincial , and five with the double qualification .
Our review columns have recently contained several notices of Provincial Calendars . These useful publications , we are glad to note , have become almost general and the few Provinces which have not yet adopted them will doubtless soon fall into line and complete the number . We would suggest to the
comp ilers of each Calendar that they should exchange copies with each other . This would be an act of courtesy , and be the means of conveying many hints for improvement .
Masonic Notes.
The convocation of the Supreme Council , 33 , at Golden-square on the 2 nd proximo , promises to be a more than usually interesting function . In addition to the usual candidates , of which there are 26 for the 30 ,
a deputation from the sister Councils of Scotland and Ireland will be received , and from the perfect harmony which is known to exist between these , bodies , a very pleasant meeting may be anticipated .
Judging from the reports recently received both from London and the Provinces , the Order of thc Temple and Maltashows very distinct signs of progress almost amounting to a revival . At a preceptory meet .
ing in London a few weeks since , no fewer than 17 candidates were installed . It must be particularly gratifying to the recently-appointed Vice-Chancellor , Major-General Hay , to find that this ancient order with its stately ceremonial is so full of life .
* * * The anxious inquiries of "Lewis" in "Notes and Queries " have succeeded in drawing a reply from the author of the " longest Masonic poem ever written . " The temerity of the querist in unearthing so portentous a
production is only equalled by the ingenuousness of the poet , who , in giving the information asked for , describes the poem as containing over 300 lines of decasyllabic verse , and the rendering of it in open lodges as "quite
unique . " No better test of the merits of such a work could be applied than its introduction in the interval between the regular lodge business and the adjournment to dinner . If it survived that ordeal , it would deserve immortality .
# # # A most enjoyable and important meeting was held in the Ulster Hall , Belfast , on the 12 th instant , in connection with the Masonic Charities . These are so well managed that out of every £ 1 subscribed 19 s . o , d . goes to the relief of afflicted brethren or their relatives .
l ' rom the reports it appears that the expenditure of the Charity Fund for the past year was . £ 391 17 s . id ., and the income £ 407 5 s . There seems a falling off in the Widows' Fund , but this is explained by the fact that the meeting was held a month earlier than usual . It is satisfactory to find that these Charities are in a flourishing condition .

"PROVINCE OF WILTSHIRE , 1894 , MASONIC CALENDAR . " —This handy guide for the province is issued with the approval of the R . W . the Earl of Radnor , Prov . G . M ., the D . P . G . M ., and the Prov . Grand Lodge , and is ably edited by Bro . F . H . Goldney , P . G . D ., the esteemed Prov . Grand Treasurer . The printers are Morris Brothers , Swindon . The editorial labours ate complete as ever , and
on similar lines to those of 1 S 93 . Why , however , is the D . Prov . G . M . termed " Right Worshipful . " That is not right , for the first word should be omitted . Provincial office confers no prefix from D . Prov . G . M . downwards . The statistical information is an excellent feature of this annual , and should be followed by others of the kind wherein such a department is neglected . There are 11 Craft lodges , with 511 members , the total receipts of which
amounted to close on £ 1000 , of which jsome £ 170 was devoted to Charity . The six Royal Arch chapters return 157 companions , and the three Mark lodges , 77 members . The list of votes for the Central Masonic Charities is most satisfactory , exhibiting a total of 2547 , including those of the girls and boys for each election . During the last 23 years over £ 5530 have been contributed to the three Institutions and the Mark Benevolent , being an average of £ 240 per annum . Well -done , Wilts !
"FIUIEMASONS' CALENDAR FOR THE PROVINCE OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE FOR THE YEAR 1894 . " —This favourite and most useful annual is published by authority of the D . P . G . M ., and is edited by the respected Prov . Grand Sec , Bro . Arthur Stubbs , P . P . G . W ., whose abilities in that direction have frequently been appreciatively noticed in the Freemason . We suggested last year an addition to the
valuable " Masonic Notes " of the " Return to the Clerk of the Peace , " which we are pleased to see in this issue , and now that department is complete , surely each province would do well to incorporate such needful information in their directories . The mass of information afforded in this most compact guide is well arranged , right on to thc list of votes , amounting to a grand total of 1196 , as usually
enumerated ( not double for girls and boys ) , which with 16 lodges and 704 members is creditable to the province . Bro . Stubbs publishes an . abstract of proceedings of the Provincial Grand Lodge annually also , and it is a model of its kind . Statistically it is perfect , and else all that can be desired . As the names of all the members of all the
lodges , chapters , & c , are given in this annual calendar , and full particulars else as to Freemasonry in Nottinghamshire , besides lists of Provincial Grand Officers , & c , of neighbouring provinces , it will readily be understood that the Prov . Grand Secretary has nobly done his part to enlighten the local Craft .
It is probable that the King and Queen of Italy will visit Queen Victoria at Florence before the re-assembling of the Italian Parliament , which is fixed for the 2 nd proximo . Their Majesties , who will be accompanied by Baron Blanc , Minister of Foreign Affairs , and possibly also by Signor Crispi , the Premier , will in that case proceed to Florence at the end ot the month .
