He svas rather ashamed that they did not . But svhere there svas such an instance he ( Bro . Fenn ) felt additional pleasure in installing such a brother . '

The VV . M . then proposed " The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Thos . \ V . Casburn Bush , " and presented him with a valuable and elegant tea and coffee set and a beautiful oil portrait of himself ( Bro . Bush ) , svhich had been painted by Bro . Cyril Stanley Williams , the newly appointed Organist of the Lodge . The W . M . accompanied the presentation by some svell-deserved compliments to

Bro . Bush on the eminent services he had rendered to the Lodge during several years , both as Warden , Alaster , and Secretary . Bro . Bush had also served the Charities , and in his capacity of Stesvard had taken up a total sum of more than £ 1000 . The inscription on the presentation svas " Presented to Bro . Thos . VV . Casburn Bush , by the members of Temple Bar Lodge , No . 172 S , in

recognition of the great services he has rendered to the lodge in having twice served as W . M ., and in various other capacities . " Bro . Bush , in acknosvledging the compliment , said it was a very memorable night for him , because he knesv that he svas in the good opinion and esteem of every brother in the lodge , and not only that , but of every one svho had honoured the lodge by his presence . With respect

to his services to the lodge , to render them had been a labour of love . As one of the founders of the lodge he found that all svho svere associated svith him in that office had a sincere love of Freemasonry and the influence of the Order , which would cause the lodge to be looked at in the future as conspicuous for every trait and characteristic that should alsvays prevail . The kindness of the brethren

svould never be effaced from ^ his memory , and if future generations svere inclined to forget it , the handsome testimonial and its inscription svould remind them . He thanked thebrethren for the gift , and hoped the G . A . O . T . U . would enable him for many years to place his services at the disposal of the lodge . Bros . LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE LODGE ( No . 1962 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge svas held at Anderton's Hotel on the 16 th inst . Bro . VV . C . Claridge , W . AL , presided , and , supported by his officers , raised Bros . Pearce and Cook to the Third Degree . The VV . AI . next installed Bro . A . Haig-Brosvn , for svhom , he being at the present the Alaster of the Sincerity Lodge , 174 a

dis-, pensation svas granted by the Grand Master for holding the two Alasterships at the same time . The ceremony of installation svas admirably performed by Bro . Claridge . M . said it svas usual svhen a Past Master ' s jesvel svas voted to an outgoing Alaster to present that jewel at the banquet table ; but it was really Masonic business , and therefore ought to be

conducted in lodge . He should therefore present Bro . Claridge svith the jesvel voted to him by the lodge in the lodge , and he requested that svorthy brother to value it not for its intrinsic svorth , not that it svas so many guineas' svorth on the lodge minutes , but because it represented the feelings of the brethren of thc lodge svho had voted it , and svho regarded Bro . Claridge's svork as an example to the lodge .

Bro . Claridge had till the last year performed the duties of Secretary , and he had done this so well that the brethren considered he ought to have the compliment paid him of electing him as Alaster of the lodge . The brethren therefore elected him ; hc svas installed , and he had had a year of office svhich reflected the greatest credit on him . It svas in consideration of these services that the brethren at the

last meeting voted him a Past Alaster ' s jesvel , and this jesvel they all hoped nosv he svould live many years to svear as a memento of those energetic and excellent services he had performed . Bro . Claridge , in reply , said he fully appreciated the gift of the brethren , and he should ever consider it his greatest honour to be able to svear it . He had endeavoured to

sustain the character of the London Rifle Brigade Lodge , and he svas sure that svhat he had done had been fully estimated by the brethren . He should not value the jesvel for its money value , as the VV . M . had said , but for the kind feelings svhich had incited the brethren to vote it to him . Therefore they looked forsvard with a very great deal of pleasure to his year of office , feeling svell assured that he wouldhavebotha happy and a prosperous year . The brethren of the lodge svould join svith him in heartily wishing the VV . AI . such a year of office . The W . AL , in reply , said he could only imagine that the

brethren did not place him in that position hastily , but that they thought over it , and the fact that his election svas unanimous , shosved that the brethren svere all of one mind . They thought that he svas most fitted to fill the position he nosv occupied , and he only trusted that svhen his year of office had expired they svould be of the same opinion . It svould be his desire and endeavour to keep up the credit ,

the honour , and the reputation of this London Rifle Brigade Lodge . It svas a young lodge , but it svas started under good auspices—it had continued in its career svith grand and noble success up to the present , and it svould be his aim not to dim that success , but to add , if possible , lustre to it . He had Masonry generally at heart ; it svas his aim and endeavour to do all he could in Masonry and tosvards

Masonry , and he svas sure they svould give him credit for having done his best . If they thought he had not done it , they thought it svas svhat he ought to have done . The Worshipful Alaster next gave "The I . P . M . and the other Past Alasters . " Bro . Claridge svas in a dual capacity of LP . AL and Secretary . They svere aware that since the foundation of the lodge he had been the mainspring of

it . He had been the Secretary of the lodge from its foundation , and even svhile he svas Master he svas to a great extent Secretary as svell . He had nosv returned to his real duties , but he had just had thrust upon him the additional honour of being I . P . M . of the lodge . The other tsvo Past Masters were nosv Bros . Neville Green and McDowall . He svas sure if a difficulty arose in the lodge

the VV . M . svould have plenty of brethren to assist him svithout reference to the Book of Constitutions . Bro . Walter C Claridge , I . P . AL , in responding , said it svas a very proud position to be placed in , and he appreciated to the full extreme the being placed in the position of P . M . of this lodge . Even before the foundation of the lodge up to the present time hc had been continually before the brethren , therefore he need not take up their

time saying more . But he svould take this opportunity of thanking the brethren for the kindness and good fellowship and friendship they had shosvn to him , and for his having been placed in the proud position of I . P . M . of this lodge . Bro . Neville Green , P . M ., also replied . As an old member of the Brigade he had often thought of forming this lodge . Years ago , before it svas sanctianed , he had thought of it , but various difficulties svere throsvn in the svay .

Hosvever , by sticking to it they had formed the lodge , and the reasons they had given for getting it up had been fully justified by the result . Hc svas proud of having been the first Alaster . The lodge svas nosv entering upon its fourth year . It had only been consecrated a short time , but from the steady svay it svent forsvard it had fulfilled the prediction of Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke that it svould become one of the best lodges in London . They had an

additional reason for svorking svell together , all being members of the same regiment—a regiment svhich stood very high indeed in Volunteer circles . As long as he had health and strength to remain a member of the lodge , he should alsvays do so , and give his best services to it To the toast of " The Visitors " Bro . Thos . VV . C Bush , P . AL Temple Bar Lodge , svas the first respondent , and he said that in the London Ride Brigade Lodge he had many

true and valued friends . Within the last few months his third son had joined the regiment , and from svhat that son had seen ot many of the members of the lodge , svhen his age permitted , he svould if they thought fit to elect him , join svith heart y goodsvill this grand and loyal lodge . Bro . Bush then took the opportunity of thanking Bro . Walter AIcDosvall for performing the ceremony of initiation for him the evening before in the Temple Bar Lodge , svhen he

( Bro . Bush ) svas too unsvell to do so . Bros . Hosvard Smith and Major Campbell also replied . The Worshipful Alaster also proposed "The Alasonic Institutions , " and made a posverful appeal on behalf of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for the next festival , of svhich Bro . AIcDosvall svas going to be a Stesvard of the London Rifle Brigade Lodge . Bro . McDowall , in the course of his reply , said there

svere 46 aged Freemasons and 81 svidosvs on the list for election in Alay to the annuity of the Benevolent Institution , while there svere only 12 vacancies for the men . Unless the fund svas greatly contributed to 81 svidosvs svould have to go asvay disappointed . Bro . Neville Green represented the lodge for the Boys' School the year before last ; he ( Bro . AIcDosvall ) had the honour of representing the lodge at the Girls' School last year , and he felt very proud indeed

nosv to have an opportunity of taking up the largest list of any London or provincial combination to the Benevolent Institution . He could not command money , but he asked for it : it svas in a good cause ; it could not be given to a better . He svas doing the best he could for it ; lie had sent out circulars to the brethren , and he hoped he should

be able to represent the London Rifle Brigade Lodge in the svay in svhich it deserved . The toast of "The Officers " follosved , and the S . VV . and several other brethren acknosvledged the compliment . The Tyler ' s toast was then given , and the brethren separated . There svas some excellent singing during the evening by members of the lodge .

WOOLWICH . —Union Waterloo Lodge ( No . 13 V—The usual monthly meeting of this grand old lodge , nosv verging on its centenary , took place on Wednesday , the 14 th inst ., at the Alasonic Hall , William-street , svhen a goodly number of the brethren and visitors from far and near assembled to greet thc W . M ., Bro . G . H . Masters , and svish him and the lodge a prosperous and happy nesv year . Bro . Alasters presided , and svas supported by Bros .

svhich svere cordially responded to . Bro . Smith , P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The VV . M ., " said Bro . Alasters had already given them proofs of svhat he could do over and over again . His working was all that could be desired , and under his rule there svas no fear that the Union Waterloo Lodge svould lose anything of its old renosvn . He asked them therefore to drink his health svith all the honour it deserved . The toast

having been drank svith fervour , Bro . Alasters , in returning thanks , said they knesv he svas unable to make a long speech , and also hosv highly he esteemed their good svishes . That year svould mark an epoch in the history of their lodge , for before he left the chair he hoped that he svould be in a position to tell them that Grand Lodge had granted them their centenary jesvel on the completion of the hundredth year of uninterrupted existence . It svas the oldest lodge and mother of all the

lodges of the district , and the only one that could lay any claim to such antiquity around them . He thanked them cordially for the toast . The other toasts svere "The Initiates , " "The Past Masters , " The Visitors , " "The Ollicers , " and "The Masonic Press . " The evening svas a most pleasant one , and sve congratulate the VV . AI . on such a prosperous and harmonious beginning of his year of office .
