is-THE MODERN GALLERY , 195 , BOND-STREET , S . W .-Water-Colour Drawings by Herbert J . Finn . —There is a note on the works of this artist now exhibiting in the above Gallery by his friend , Dr . Williamson , which is interesting from the fact that we obtain a glimpse of his inner life , and how gradually he arrived at his present artistic excellence . We commend it to visitors . Thos ; who view Mr . Finn ' s production cannot fail to observe that the artist has two distinct styles—one broad and effective ; the other delicate and refined . The Dutch pictures illustrate the first ; the
architectural details of York , Durham , Ely , & c , the second . He is admirable in both From our personal knowledge of Holland , we affirm that the Dutch paintings are admirable , true to nature and not exaggerated . We would notice especially Nos . S , 12 , 19 , 32 . The beautiful delicate details , the fine astomspherie ' effects , are well shown in the cathedral pictures . Nos . 30 , 33 , 35 , 40 , 42 ( very line ) , 4 S , 50 , 52 , 53 , 70 , 72 , 75 . From 50 to 75 good examples of the artist ' s conscientious work . We highly commend this exhibition .
IDYLLS AND LANDSCAPES IN SILVER POINT AND WATER COLOUR , by Charles Sainton , R . I ., in the Imperial Room , Continental Gallery , 157 , New Bondstreet , W . — l '' or the last three years we have had the pleasure of attending the exhibition of Mr . Chas . Sainton ' s drawings in gold and silver point and in water colour . The subjects chosen by the talented artist are so replete with deep feeling , so graceful in their poetic fancy , as at once to appeal to the intellect and taste of the beholder . In our limited space we cannot'do more than notice a few of the pictures which pleases us most , leaving the discriminating visitor to discover fresh beaties hims : lf . Of the silver
points we notice No . 4 , " From this sordid earth 1 fly , to my castle in the sky ; " G , Autumn ; 9 , "The Syren's Cave "—the outlines of the figure are elegant ; 15 , Puck Contemplative—Puck under different points of view is a favourite subject with the artist ; 20 , " Movement " —every figure is in motion . Of the water colours—1 , The Wood Nymph ' s Dance—the figure most graceful in its pose ; we are not satisfied with the tree work ; 25 , This we think the finest picture in the collection , the beautiful harmony of colour , the apt manner in which Mr . Sainton has ] cmbodied the poet ' slines , cannot fail to attract the attention of those who can appreciate high art .
BRO . FREDK . C FOSTER , W . M . of the United Mariners' Lodge , No . 30 , was warmly congratulated on Tuesday evening upon the excellence ofjhis working . During his year of office it has mattered little whether the business of the lodge included initiation , passing , or raising , the impressive ceremonial has lost nothing in his hands . On Tuesday Bro . A . E . Prentice was a candidate for raising and Bro . H . V . Dorey for passing . The beautiful ritual , so splendidly expounded , will have a life-long place in their memories and those of the other members of the lodge . Bro . Foster spoke
feelingly concerning the assistance rendered by his officers later on , when during the Fourth Degree he proposed their toast . In the course of the evening the usual loyal and Masonic t > asts were interspersed with recitations , vocal and instrumental music , Bro . Newbold , an old favourite , giving " The Diver . " Bro . Humphries , with quite a professional touch , gave a couple of recitationsthe first a fallen S ' ar , '' a story of an old " pro " down on his luck , and secondly , " The Sermon which was never Preached . " The latter , it is no exaggeration to say , not only held the lodge spellbound during its rendering , but for some minutes afterwards . Bro .
Kretszchmar sang " O Jugend , wie bist du so schon , " a Tutonic selection which one of the bieihren insisted upon translating into what he termed the Norse " Putyourfingertnyournose . " Bro . Smith , P . M ., introduced the humorous element by singing " The Polka and the Choir Boy " ; Bro . Steingraber , P . M ., by reciting " Smoking " ; and Bro . Wilkins by spinning a yarn as to why " Ma couldn ' t be a Mason . " Bro . Remington ' s , P . M ., usual welcome contribution consisted of " Father O'Flynn . " Mr . Barber , of the Rctturant Fra < cati , very kindly presided at the piano , and during the evening played a couple of selections , " The Shepherd ' s Dance " and " Under the Shade of th « Palm , " the last-named from " Flnradora , "

is-THE MODERN GALLERY , 195 , BOND-STREET , S .
