Bro . Stanley J . Attenborough , Life-Governor of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , who gave us last week his views on the subject of the pension proposed to be paid to Bro . Binckes on his retirement from the ' Secretaryship of that Charity , must forgive
us if vve describe him as somewhat self-opinionated . He evidently cannot bring himself to believe ( 1 ) that there can be any other opinion on the subject of Bro . Binckes's pension than the one he holds , or ( 2 ) that if there is such another opinion , it can possibly be worth a moment's consideration .
He tells us point blank that he considers the application of any part of the funds of the Institution for Boys " for the maintenance of retired officers of the Institution is contrary to Law 2 . " This is equivalent
to telling the Provisional Management Committee , vvhich includes a Queen ' s Counsel and several solicitors ¦ of long standing and in good practice , that they are incompetent to perform the duties vvhich have been entrusted to them .
Whether or not , the services of Bro . Binckes , aa Secretary to the Institution during upwards of 28 years , are such as to merit a pension , is a question on vvhich we and others have expressed an opinion , ' nor do vveventure to quarrel vvith those vvho differ from us on
