Batley , rendered the selections in a manner highly creditable to the training they have received , and their performances delighted the . audience , the fantasia on Scotch airs fairly "bringing down the house . BRO . FREDERIC DAVISON , P . G . D . Bro . Frederic Davison , whose lamented death we . briefly announced last week , had been a member of our ¦ Order for 3 6 years , having been initiated in the St . Andrew ' s Lodge , No . 26 9 , now No . 222 , as far back as 1853 . But it is less on account of the length of time he had been a Freemason than for the valuable services

he was constantly engaged in rendering that his memory ¦ will be respected . He occupied the chair in his mother lodge in 18 57 and 1858 , joined the Westminster and Keystone , No . 10 , in the former year—being elected W . M . in 1881—was one of the founders of the Carnarvon Lodge , No . 708 , in 1859 , and became its

Treasurer in 1 S 6 9 ; a founder and Treasurer of the Orpheus Lodge , No . 1706 , and Earl of Mornington Lodge , No . 2000 , and a joining member of the Palladin Lodge , No . 120 , Hereford . He vvas a P . P . G . Supt . of Works and P . G . Registrar of Herefordshire , Past P . S . G . W . of Middlesex , and in 188 4 was appointed and invested as one of the S . G . Deacons of Grand

Lodge . He was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in the Alfred Chapter , No . 340 , Oxford , in 1857 , and having joined the Watford Chapter , No . 404 , Watford , in 1868 , was installed as Z . in 1874 , and again in 18 75 . In 18 73 he was a founder and first J . of the Burdett Chapter , No . 1293 , and the year following joined the

Westminster and Keystone Chapter , becoming subsequentl y its Treasurer . He vvas P . P . G . H . Middlesex , and P . P . G . Soj . Herts , and in 188 4 was appointed G . 2 nd Asst . Soj . in Supreme Grand Chapter . In 186 4 he vvas advanced to the Mark Degree in the Carnarvon Lodge , No . 7 , and vvas installed W . M . in 1871 . In

18 70 he was appointed D . P . G . M . M . of Middlesex and Surrey , and in 18 73 became G . Registrar in the Mark G . Lodge , and Irom 18 74 to 1885 vvas annually reelected G . Treasurer , when the plan of electing a fresh brother to this office , and Bro . Davison received the rank of Past G . Warden in recognition of

his services . He vvas a founder of the Watford Mark Lodge , No . 241 , in 18 79 , and its W . M . in 1880 , and a joining member and afterwards Treasurer of the Davison ' Lodge , No . 331 , which vvas consecrated in 188 4 . He vvas a member of the Allied Degrees , was perfected Rose Croix in 18 71 , and in 18 72 founder , and in 187 s M . W . S . of the St .

George ' s Chapter Rose Croix . He was installed K . T . in the Blondel Preceptory in 18 78 , and elected its E . P . three years later . There were also other bodies in the various Degrees with vvhich he vvas associated , and , besides , he vvas a generous supporter of all our Masonic Institutions , for each of which , as well as for the Mark

Benevolent Fund , he had served one or more Stewardshi ps . A career so full of activity as was Bro . Davison ' s is not often met with , and , in proportion to the length and merit of the services he rendered , will be the greatness of the sorrow vvhich vvill be felt for "is loss and the respect vvith which his memory will be ¦ cherished .

« ouse and Inverness Lodge , No . 4 . In 1882-3 , " 0 represent , d that distinguished lodge on the Board 9 j Grand Stewards , and in 188 3 he became its Worshi pful Master . In 188 7 he vvas , in conjunction * 'th Bro . the Rev . T . C . Smyth , D . D ., appointed a wand Chaplain , and instead , therefore , of being a

jubilee Grand Chaplain—that is , one on whom the rank ot Prov . Grand Chaplain was conferred in connection ^ n the celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee—Bro . Weldon was one of the regular Grand Chaplains of . year . He was a Life Governor of all three Institu' ° , and had served a Stewardship in aid of each .

BRO . R . J . PATON , ' I . P . M . 205 . On Monday evening , Mr . G . P . Wyatt , * Deputy-Coroner for East Surrey , ' held an inquiry at * the Sun and Doves , Camberwell , respecting the death of Bro Robert James Paton , aged 34 years , a bank clerk , lately residing at No . 22 , Denmark-road ,

Coldharbour-Iane , vvhich occurred under sad circumstances . It appeared from the evidence of the widow that on Wednesday evening , the 13 th inst ., the deceased attended a banquet of the Vitruvian Lodge , 'No . 8 7 , at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge , and early the following morning was brought home dead .

A friend of the deceased stated that he saw him at Brixton , on his way home , and that he told him that he had been knocked down on London Bridge , which statement was supported by the fact that the deceased ' s clothes vvere muddy , and his hat had been knocked in Another witness stated that he saw him after at

Loughborough Junction l y ing on the pavement in a pool of blood . Several gentlemen stated the deceased was quite soberatthetimeheleft . Oneamongthe number , Bro . Dr . Walker , deposed to having knovvn the deceased 16 years , and he had never seen him the worse for . liquor , but he-had complained to him about the state of his

heart . The result of the post-mortem examination made on the body showed that death vvas due to syncope possibly arising from the state of the lungs , vvhich were considerably congested , and the jury returned a verdict in accordance vvith the medical testimony . Our deceased brother was initiated in the Lodge of

Israel , No . 205 , in October , 1880 , and after filling the other offices , served as W . M . last year , and discharged the duties of his office to the entire satisfaction of the brethren , to whom he had very much endeared himself b y his amiable and kindly conduct to all with whom he came in contact . The funeral took place on

Wednesday 20 th inst ., at the Necropolis , Woking , and besides the widow and his eldest boy and girl and other members of the family , was attended by the following brethren : Bros . C . F . many years a responsible position , sent a magnificent wreath of flowers , as did also the W . M . and members of the Lodge of Israel ; the W . M . and members of the Vitruvian Lodge ; Mr . and Mrs . Cliffe ; and many others . Our Bro . Paton leaves a widow and seven young children to mourn his premature decease .

BRO . FRED . W . FLETCHER . We regret to announce the unexpected death of Bro . F . W . Fletcher at the early age of 31 years . Bro . Fletcher vvas on a visit to this country from Poonah with his family , and vvas on the eve of returning to India when he vvas taken ill and died . His funeral took place at Abney Park Cemetery on the 18 th inst , and was numerously attended .

The chapter vvas then closed , and the companions adjourned to the banqueting . hall , where they spent a pleasant evening , and thus closed another and very successful year in the history of this old chapter .

pleasure to visit the Mallet and Chisel Lodge , where he was sure of receiving a hearty Masonic welcome . He further expressed his thanks for the honour done him in electing him Jan honorary member at a previous lodge . Grand Lodge certificates were presented to several brethren , and two candidates were proposed for advancement .

_ Hearty good wishes were tendered by several of the visitors , and after the usual proclamations the lodge vvas closed . Bro . Laville is held in much esteem by his brethren , and a successful year is anticipated . He is a Past Master in the Craft , and P . Z . in the Royal Arch .

Bro . Col . Sir Alfred Kirby and Lady Kirby were passengers by the train that was wrecked at St . Etienne a day or two since . Their escape from injury was most providential , as the carriage in which they vvere sitting vvas quite telescoped . AVith the exception of a severe shaking , which , however they have now almost recovered from , neither the Colonel nor his wife sustained any injury at all .

He vvas a P . P . G . Supt . of Works and P . G . Registrar of Herefordshire , Past P . S . G . W . of Middlesex , and in 188 4 was appointed and invested as one of the S . G . Deacons of Grand

Lodge . He was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in the Alfred Chapter , No . 340 , Oxford , in 1857 , and having joined the Watford Chapter , No . 404 , Watford , in 1868 , was installed as Z . in 1874 , and again in 18 75 . In 18 73 he was a founder and first J . of the Burdett Chapter , No . 1293 , and the year following joined the

Westminster and Keystone Chapter , becoming subsequentl y its Treasurer . He vvas P . P . G . H . Middlesex , and P . P . G . Soj . Herts , and in 188 4 was appointed G . 2 nd Asst . Soj . in Supreme Grand Chapter . In 186 4 he vvas advanced to the Mark Degree in the Carnarvon Lodge , No . 7 , and vvas installed W . M . in 1871 . In

18 70 he was appointed D . P . G . M . M . of Middlesex and Surrey , and in 18 73 became G . Registrar in the Mark G . Lodge , and Irom 18 74 to 1885 vvas annually reelected G . Treasurer , when the plan of electing a fresh brother to this office , and Bro . Davison received the rank of Past G . Warden in recognition of

his services . He vvas a founder of the Watford Mark Lodge , No . 241 , in 18 79 , and its W . M . in 1880 , and a joining member and afterwards Treasurer of the Davison ' Lodge , No . 331 , which vvas consecrated in 188 4 . He vvas a member of the Allied Degrees , was perfected Rose Croix in 18 71 , and in 18 72 founder , and in 187 s M . W . S . of the St .

George ' s Chapter Rose Croix . He was installed K . T . in the Blondel Preceptory in 18 78 , and elected its E . P . three years later . There were also other bodies in the various Degrees with vvhich he vvas associated , and , besides , he vvas a generous supporter of all our Masonic Institutions , for each of which , as well as for the Mark

Benevolent Fund , he had served one or more Stewardshi ps . A career so full of activity as was Bro . Davison ' s is not often met with , and , in proportion to the length and merit of the services he rendered , will be the greatness of the sorrow vvhich vvill be felt for "is loss and the respect vvith which his memory will be ¦ cherished .

jubilee Grand Chaplain—that is , one on whom the rank ot Prov . Grand Chaplain was conferred in connection ^ n the celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee—Bro . Weldon was one of the regular Grand Chaplains of . year . He was a Life Governor of all three Institu' ° , and had served a Stewardship in aid of each .

Obituary.

BRO . R . J . PATON , ' I . P . M . 205 . On Monday evening , Mr . G . P . Wyatt , * Deputy-Coroner for East Surrey , ' held an inquiry at * the Sun and Doves , Camberwell , respecting the death of Bro Robert James Paton , aged 34 years , a bank clerk , lately residing at No . 22 , Denmark-road ,

Coldharbour-Iane , vvhich occurred under sad circumstances . It appeared from the evidence of the widow that on Wednesday evening , the 13 th inst ., the deceased attended a banquet of the Vitruvian Lodge , 'No . 8 7 , at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge , and early the following morning was brought home dead .

A friend of the deceased stated that he saw him at Brixton , on his way home , and that he told him that he had been knocked down on London Bridge , which statement was supported by the fact that the deceased ' s clothes vvere muddy , and his hat had been knocked in Another witness stated that he saw him after at

Loughborough Junction l y ing on the pavement in a pool of blood . Several gentlemen stated the deceased was quite soberatthetimeheleft . Oneamongthe number , Bro . Dr . Walker , deposed to having knovvn the deceased 16 years , and he had never seen him the worse for . liquor , but he-had complained to him about the state of his

heart . The result of the post-mortem examination made on the body showed that death vvas due to syncope possibly arising from the state of the lungs , vvhich were considerably congested , and the jury returned a verdict in accordance vvith the medical testimony . Our deceased brother was initiated in the Lodge of

Israel , No . 205 , in October , 1880 , and after filling the other offices , served as W . M . last year , and discharged the duties of his office to the entire satisfaction of the brethren , to whom he had very much endeared himself b y his amiable and kindly conduct to all with whom he came in contact . The funeral took place on

Wednesday 20 th inst ., at the Necropolis , Woking , and besides the widow and his eldest boy and girl and other members of the family , was attended by the following brethren : Bros . C . F . Cliffe ; and many others . Our Bro . Paton leaves a widow and seven young children to mourn his premature decease .

BRO . FRED . W . FLETCHER . We regret to announce the unexpected death of Bro . F . W . Fletcher at the early age of 31 years . Bro . Fletcher vvas on a visit to this country from Poonah with his family , and vvas on the eve of returning to India when he vvas taken ill and died . His funeral took place at Abney Park Cemetery on the 18 th inst , and was numerously attended .

Bro . Col . Sir Alfred Kirby and Lady Kirby were passengers by the train that was wrecked at St . Etienne a day or two since . AVith the exception of a severe shaking , which , however they have now almost recovered from , neither the Colonel nor his wife sustained any injury at all .
