Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Secretary . We are glad to hear that Bro . the Bishop of Peterborough is regaining his strength , having latterly been able to take some outdoor exercise .

Bro . Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart , Bart ., P . G . M . of Scotland , has expressed his intention of devoting the sum of £ 2000 to provide work for the unemployed in Glasgow . Deer-stalking in the great Forest of Athole has closed for the season , 102 stags , of which 13 fell to the gun of Bro . the Duke of Athole in one week , having been

killed . Bro . the Earl of Jersey presided last week at the annual harvest home dinner ; on his estate at Middleton , and referred , in the course of one of his speeches , to certain important matters connected with agricultural depression . Bros . Sir G . Willis and Sir F . Fitzwygram ,

Bart ., M . P ., were among the naval and military officers present on the 14 th inst . when the Mayor of Portsmouth , accompanied by the members of the Corporation , laid the foundation stone of the new Town Hall . Visitors to the Criterion will be sorry to hear that Bro . W . Culverhouse will not attend to the comforts of the brethren af f er this date . Bro . W . Culverhouse , by his

courteous attention , will be remembered by many brethren . He had been with Messrs . Spiers and Pond many years , and was much respected . The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of West Yorkshire will be held , by invitation from Lodge No . 53 , at Sheffield , on Wednesday , the 27 th inst ., at 4 p . m ., when a new code of bye-laws will be

submitted for approval , and the officers for the ensuing 12 months appointed . We trust that Bro . Seymour Smith's annual concert , which is announced to take place at an early date , will prove , as usual , a conspicuous success . It should do so , at all events , for there is an excellent programme , and a body of able and popular artists , both vocal and instrumental , to interpret it . Full particulars to be had of Bro .

Seymour Smith , 24 , Camden-road , Nunhead-Iane , S . E . The members of St . Bartholomew ' s Lodge held their annual meeting in the Council Chamber , at the Town Hall , Wednesbury , on Tuesday afternoon , the 12 th inst . There was a large attendance of members and visiting brethren . Bro . E . T . Collins was for the second time installed as W . M . In the evening a dinner was held in the lodge room at the Anchor Hotel , and a very enjoyable

evening was spent . At the last meeting of the Eboracum Lodge , No . 1611 , held in the Freemasons' Hall , St . Saviourgate , York , Bro . Brown , S . The monthly meeting of the Falcon Lodge was held on Thursday evening , the 14 th inst ., in the Masonic Hall , Thirsk , and was visited by the Hon . W . T . About 20 members of the Eboracum Lodge at York , and others from Northallerton and Ripon , accepted special invitations from the W . M .,

Bro . Z . Wright , for the exchange of fraternal courtesies . A paper on " The Masonic Temple" was read by Bro . T . J . Wilkinson , P . M ., and discussed . We referred , in connection with the recent formation of the Prov . Grand Lodge of the Isle of Man , to the presence of several of the Grand Officers on the occasion , and paid them a compliment , which was no more

than their due , in regard to their readiness at all times to undertake any duty required of them , no matter what the trouble and distance involved . We enumerated most of those who took part in the interesting ceremony of installing R . W . Bro . Major Goldie-Taubman as P . G . M . of the Isle of Man , but , through an unintentional oversight , vve seem to have omitted from the list the name of Bro .

Colonel Somerville-Burney , P . G . D ., who acted as S . W . during the installation . We trust our worthy brother will kindly forgive the omission . A revolution in watches seems natural , seeing that time which is marked by the watch is in a perpetual state of revolution . But it certainly takes one ' s breath away when one hears of a really good watchwhich marks

, the time with splendid accuracy , like "The Holborn Watch" and "The Holborn Chronograph , " being purchasable at such insignificant prices as 9 s . 6 d . for the former , and 12 s . 6 d . for the latter . Yet the sale of these articles at the teems we have stated is a fact , and what is much more to the point , Mr . A . VV . Gamage , 121 , Holborn , from whom they arc obtainableguarantees their

, soundness , for two years at least . They are handsome to look at , being enclosed in aluminium gold or nickel cases , with crystal glasses , and having a quick winding keyless action . "The Chronograph" is _ a centre-second stopwatch , and therefore will be found invaluable for sporting in

men timing races and members of the medical profession in attending their patients . But both are admirable , and our friends who do not care to risk their gold watches , yet require always to have about them an accurate timekeeper , will be doing themselves a service if they patronise Mr . Uainage ,

The Globe in describing some of the incidents of the recent gales mentions that from a barque which was wrecked at Tintagei on Saturday last , the body of a man had been picked up , and in his pocket was found a Masonic certificate of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , with the name " William J . Pucksley ; " and the finding of a nightdress bearing the name of Ann Pucksley leaves little doubt that

Bro . Pucksley was thc captain of the ship , and that his wife has shared the fate of her husband and the whole crew . There has been a considerable amount of activity among the lodges and brethren under the District Grand Lodge of New South Wales , English Constitution . A quarterly communication was held at Freemasons' Hall , York-street , Sydney , on the 17 th May last , and since then

there have been no less than three emergency meetings ; one at Gundagai on the 20 th June , to inaugurate the new Lodge of Loyalty ; a second at Burwood for a like purpose in behalf of the Burwood Lodge on the Sth July ; and the third at the Oddfellows' Hall , Woollahra , on the 12 th August , when the Lodge Paddington Ionic was consecrated and inaugurated . This does not look much like a secession

of New South Wales from the Grand Lodges of the old country . There was also the further quarterly communication of the District Grand Lodge at Freemasons' Hall , Sydney , on the 29 th July , this being the annual communication , when the District Grand Officers for the ensuing year were appointed and invested . HOI . LOWAV ' PILLS . —Epidemic Diseases . —The alarming increase

of English cholera and diarrluna should be a warning to everyone to subdue at once any irregularity tending towards disease . I lolloway ' s Pills should now be in every household to rectify all impure states of the blood , to remedy weakness , and to overcome impaired general health . Nothing can be simpler than the instructions for taking this corrective medicine , nothing more efficient than its harmless than its

cleansing powers , nothing more vegetable ingredients . Holloway ' s is the best physic during the summer season , when decaying fruit and unwholesome vegetables are frequently deranging the bowels , and daily exposing thousands , through their negligence in permitting disordered action to the dangers of diarrheca , dysentery , and cholera . —[ ADVT ]

On the other hand , some of the inhabitants ofthe neighbourhood not

only plundered the stores from the wreck , but even stripped the dead of their valuables , PEARL LIFE ASSURANCE COMPANY ( LIMITED ) . — The report presented at the twenty-second annual meeting of this company at its offices , on the 24 th ult ., shows a very satisfactory rate of progress , and that its position is becoming stronger and sounder every vear . Thus , to i » o back

only five years , in 1 S 81 the income from premiums was in round figures £ 91 , 458 , now it is £ 195 , 737 . During the past year , 453 , 898 policies were issued , representing a new annual premium income of £ 169 , 631 , while the total income from all sources during the same period was £ 199 , 985 , showing an increase over the year previous amounting to iC-35 > S 7 S . At the termination of the financial

year in June last the policies in force in the company's books yielded an income of £ 23 1 , 793 , and the 11 , 774 claims and grants paid during the year amounted to £ 73 , 857 , making a total so paid since the establishment of the Company of £ 403 , 252 . There has also been added £ 14 , 318 to the Assurance Fund which with capital paid up , now amounts to £ 124 , 228 . Lastly , the actuaries , after employing an exceptionally severe test

and having estimated all negative values , have been able to show a surplus of £ 7087 . Under these circumstances the Directors in this report felt justified in recommending a dividend of 10 per cent ., payable in two half yearly instalments , and one of those payments has already been made . Thus , in spite of the commercial depression which has prevailed so generally , the Pearl Life Assurance Company has gone on its way prosperously during the past 12 months .
