M . and his officers , the Pattison occasional music being finely rendered by the Organist of the lodge during the ceremonies . Five guineas were voted to the fund being raised for Bro . Holleyman ' s widow , and five guineas to Bro . Aillud ' s list for the Boys' School . Bro . Mason gave

notice that he should at the next meeting move that a certain sum be yearly set aside from the lodge funds for the purpose of building a Masonic Hall , or home for the lodge , instancing the success of their provincial brethren at Wilmington , who had from very small beginnings built for of the and the

themselves a hall worthy lodge province . The lodge was then closed , and at the social board the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were supplemented by some good singing by Bros . Lloyd , Tyler , Fenn , Taylor , Aillud , and Hooton , Bro . Tyler accompanying as he so well knows how to do .

's , and officers were appointed to revise the bye-laws of the lodge , and the same Committee were appointed to make arrangements for the summer banquet of the lodge , which it was decided should take place at

Brighton . Bro . J . Ives , P . M ., was then decorated with a Secretary ' s jewel of thejvalue of five guineas , furnished by Bro . George Kenning , and presented by the lodge as a small token of its appreciation of his valuable services as Secretary during the past seven years . The W . M . in presenting it said it did not often fall to the lot of a Master to present such a jewel to one who was not only a brother ,

but a father also , and he felt proud of the opportunity . He could not himself eulogise his own father's services , but he knew that every member of that lodge esteemed Bro . Ives , and wished as fervently as he did that Bro . Ives might long be spared with health and strength to wear it as an expression of their hearty good wishes for his welfare . Bro . Ives briefly , but feelingly responded , and declared

that if he could in the future do even more for the benefit of the lodge he would ; but above all . things he should cherish the jewel as one of the brightest ornaments of his Masonic career , which if it had not been brilliant , had , he trusted , at least been useful . The lodge was then closed , and supper and harmony helped to pass a few pleasant hours .

M ., and remarked that it was a most pleasant duty for him to perform in presenting it , as it was a token of the esteem and respect of the brethren of the lodge Bro . Cox had made himself loved and respected , and he wished him long life to wear it .

The jewel was made of iS carat gold . The top brooch bore the word " Quartus , "—i . e ., fourth year . On the ribbon was the lodge crest , the same as that used by H . S . H . Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar . The crown was studded with rubies and diamonds , and the badge was enamelled in dark blue and light green . Below the badge is a ribbon , on it being enamelled in white "W . M . 1 SS 4-5 , " and beneath this is a shield in blue enamel and a monogram

in gold , " W . L . C" The engraving on the back of the square was as follows : — " Presented by the members of the Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar Lodge , No . 1903 , to Bro . W . Latham Cox , as a token of their sense of his Masonic attainments , genial character , and able conduct in presiding over them , 1884-5 . " Bro . W . Latham Cox replied , and said he hardly knew how to thank the brethren for their brotherly love and

esteem . On looking back at the past year he felt he was not entitled to it , as he was absent so many nights from his chair . He thanked them for the mark of esteem bestowed upon him , and he assured them that the lodge and every brother of it were most dear to him . The customary votes of thanks were accorded to the Installing Master , who responded , to Bro . E . O . V . Haldane , P . M ., as acting Treasurer since the death of the

late Bro . Threadingham , and to the Auditors . The lodge was closed in due form . The brethren ( about 60 ) then sat down to a cold banquet , admirably served by Bro . T . Scadden , of the Grosvenor Hotel , Southsea . The VV . M . proposed the first toast , "The Queen and the Craft , " which was duly honoured , and in proposing " The Health of the M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " remarked that he was one of the most hardworking men in

the kingdom . They had read of his tour to Ireland and the different places he visited ; not only had he gone amongst nobles , palaces , & c , but the lowest class of Irish , in the slums and huts . Whatever his hands found to do he did with all his mi g ht . Bro . Long asked the brethren to drink with great enthusiasm to the toast . The W . M . proposed the toast of " The Right Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master ; the Earl of Lathom

, D . P . G . M . ; and Officers of Grand Lodge . " He said he knew very little of Grand Lodge as he had only attended there once , and then it reminded him that the officers worked hard and did their duty admirably . Unfortunately , the Grand Lodge met on the same night as themselves , or he might visit it more often . The Grand Lodge officers were deserving of their thanks for the manner in which they carried out their duties .

Bro . W . Latham Cox , I . P . M ., proposed the toast of "The R . W . Prov . G . M ., Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P . ; the R . W . Dep . Prov . G . M ., Bro . J . E . Le Feuvre , J . P . ; and Officers of Grand Lodge . " He said it was a question whether it did the Prov . Grand Officers good in drinking to their healths nearly every night ; it certainly did those present good . They certainly did have a drink over it . But , joking apart , the proposing of the toast did do a lot of good ,

tor it reminded them that they were not at the top of the tree , and that there was a Provincial Grand Lodge . They owed their allegiance not only to the lodge , but to the province . In speaking of Bro . Le Feuvre being raised to the position of D . P . G . M ., Bro . Cox remarked that there was not a more hardworking or zealous Mason existing m the province than Bro . Le Feuvre . The brother on his left , Bro . T . Paget , P . M ., P . G . S . D ., had also a provincial

collar , and no one deserved it better than he did , and he was worthy of the honour conferred upon him . With regard to the P . G . M ., no one in the world could compare with the good qualities ot Bro . Beach . He coupled the name of Bro . Page with the toast . Bro . Page responded , and said that they could not expect much from him after the great eloquence they had heard from Bro . W . Latham Cox . They all knew the abilities of

the P . G . M ., and it was needless for him to dilate upon them . Bro . Townsend , P . M ., rose to propose , he said , the toast of the evening , "The Health of the Worshipful Master . " It had been his pleasure , in and out of Masonry , to know Bro . Long for twenty years . To know him was to respect him . He had watched Bro . Long ' s progress in the lodge , of which he was one of the founders and one of the first officers , and , by perseverance and regular attendance , it was the unanimous wish of the lodge

that he was placed in the proud position of W . M ., and he was sure when the time came for him to vacate the chair he would be found to be a good man . Bro . Long , VV . M ., thanked the brethren for their kind reception , and also Bro . Townsend for the good things said of him . If , however , he was not deserving of them he would endeavour to merit it before his year otoffice expired . He would do his best towards the lodge b y regular attendance and learning the ritual . He took that opportunity of thanking the brethren for the position they had placed him in that night .
