PROPOSED NORTHERN COUNTIES LODGE . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , You will be gratified to know that this movement is making very satisfactory progress . A meeting has been
fixed for Wednesday , 24 th June next , and brethren who are interested in the movement are very cordially invited to send their names to you , in order that they may be notified of the place and hour of meeting . —Yours fraternally , A LANCASHIRE FREEMASON .
THE CONSECRATION OF LODGES . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Many thanks for inserting my letter upon the question of " Consecration " in your paper of the 22 nd of November , 1 SS 4 . Although we have veryanxiously looked at every number of the Freemason since that date , we have
unfortunately not received the required information . By your reports , every new lodge is " consecrated , " not * with standing that the word is omitted from the revised Book of Constitutions . My query may not appear of much importance in England , where Masonic ceremonies are so well understood
and carried out , but in this colony we have lodges working under authority from the Grand Lodges of England , Ireland , Scotland , and Victoria , and the practice of establishing a lodge without the ceremony of " consecration " appears to be a grave constitutional question that may involve the legality of many lodges and all the members they
initiate . As the question is causing great discussion , difference of opinion , and , I regret to say , un-Masonic feeling , I trust that you will kindly enlighten us by giving a full answer to my letter of November last . —Yours fraternally , P . M ., E . C , Melbourne , Victoria , April 6 . Victoria .
THE RECENT FESTIVAL OF THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Satisfactory as the result of the recent Festival of our Girls' School undoubtedly is , an examination of the Stewards' lists discloses a fact which , in the interest of the
Craft , should be brought home to its members , namel y * that a large majority of lodges do not appear to recognize their obligation to afford any support whatever to Institu * tions , in the benefits of which every Mason under the English Constitution may fairly consider he has a vested interest . Those who , from time to time , have scrutinized the
Stewards' lists of the Festivals of the several Masonic Institutions , cannot fail to have been struck by the recurrence , year after year , of the names of the same lodges , and of the same individuals , and the invariable absence from such lists of the names of hundreds of lodges , many composed of brethren who , if not actually wealthy , cannot plead poverty as an excuse for neglecting to fulfil what
I venture to regard as the most important of Masonic duties . There is another fact in connection with this subject , which has recently been much commented on , that among those who not only aspire to but have succeeded in attaining , high Masonic rank , there are not a few who do not appear to have included , in their claims to Masonic
distinction , the active support of our Masonic Institutions . Far be it from me to suggest that Masonic honours should become degraded by being made simply a question of pounds , shillings , and pence , or that any office should practically be sold to the highest bidder ; but , at the same
time , I venture to think that those responsible for the distribution of the much-coveted honours , whether in Grand Lodge , or in the provinces , would do well in selecting the favoured recipients not wholly to disregard , as they too frequently have done , the practical exercise of that virtue we all profess to admire . A PAST GRAND OFFICER .

MASONIC CALENDAR FOR THE PROVINCE OF HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT . 1 S 85-6 . Bro . Edgar Goble has signalised his accession to the office of Prov . Grand Secretary by issuing an edition for the current year of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Masonic Calendar in continuation of the series commenced during the Prov . G . Secretaryship of Bro . Le Feuvre , now
D . P . G . M . He has done wisely , we think , in keeping closely to the lines laid down by Bro . Le Feuvre . and is to be congratulated on the success of his efforts to produce a compact and trustworthy guide to the lodges , chapters , conclaves , & c , in his province . As in the case of the Durham Calendar , we cannot discover that information is furnished which had better have been withheld , or that any is wanting which ought to have been supplied . Where there is a blank in the case of any Masonic body , it is
because the particulars have not been afforded by the Secretary of the body itself ; but this does not detract from Bro . Goble ' s success , as he clearly could not give what he had never received . However , the instances are very rare in which Bro . Goble has been obliged to substitute " No Information" for the usual details . As regards the manner in which the contents have been arranged and the style in which they have been given to the public , we consider that little , if any , room is left tot improvement .
