O ., replied . In submitting the toast of the evening , "The Worshipful Master , " Bro . C . Baguley , I . P . M ., said Bro . Hilton was held in affectionate regard by the members of
the lodge , and was also highly respected and esteemed by the brethren throughout the Province of Sussex . It had been his great privilege to instal Bro . Hilton that afternoon , and on behalf of the lodge he cordially wished him a happy and prosperous year . ( Applause ) . The W . M ., on rising to respond , was warmly received . After gratefully acknowledging the kind words of the I . P . M ., and the hearty manner in which they had been
endorsed by the brethren , he said he regarded it as a great honour to occupy the chair He had looked forward to that distinction with pleasure , but the remembrance of the excellent work of the Worshipful Masters who had preceded him caused him to enter upon his duties with no little trepidation . He , however , assured the brethren that he would do his utmost for the success and prosperity of the lodge , and , confident of the loyal support of his officers , anticipated a very happy year . Bro . H . Elliott gave " The Worshipful Masters of the Lodges in the Province . " which Bro . G . H . Levett acknowledged ; while "The Visitors , " submitted by Bro . C Howard , received replies from Bros . T , Corringham and W . Hiilman . The remaining toasts were " The I . P . M . and the Past Misters , " " The Officers of the Lodge , " and the Tyler ' s toast .
Upton Lodge , No . 1227 . Nothing succeeds like success we are told , and on that principle we can account for the fact that this moot l's meeting of the Upton Lodge—although an off-night in every sense of the word—proved another " gala day " in its history , the special feature of the meeting being the report of the W . M ., Bra . VV , J . Carroll , who secured the honourable position of premier Steward of England at the recent Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent institution , taking up a list of £ 525 103 . It was a matter of
particular gratification to the members of the lodge that at this Festival they had actually secured the first place in point of amount sent up , as on a previous occasion the Steward of the Upton Lodge at one of the Festivals missed the distinction by a few shillings only ; on this occasion the lodge representative had a good surplus , the next list in order being upwards of £ 30 behind , and naturally the workers of No . 1227 , an ! the brethren who had supported the list of the W . M ., were particularly gratified at the splendid result—it was indeed most creditable to all concerned .
The meeting was held at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool-street , on Thursday , Ihe 14 th instant , and was well attended by olficers of the lodge and other memoers and visitors ; the whole of the proceedings being ably presided over by Bro . W . J . Carroll , W . M ., who won general approval and added to his reputation by the minner in waich he performed the different ceremonies . There were four candidites for raising—Bros . Arthur Ekins , Thomas Dorman Carter , Charles J . Gilmer , and Morris C . Cole—in . I all of them were present , and were duly admitted to a participation in the secrets of the
oublime Degree of a M . M . Five of six candidates for passing were present : Bros . Herbert C Houghton , Thomas Saunders , James Avery , Richard Henry Ferguson , and Arthur Ferguson , and they were passed to the Second Degree . In inmiuncing the result of his Stewardship on behalf of the Old People , Bro . Carroll slid thit no less than 40 members of the Upton Lodge had supported him with Life Governorship contributions of 10 guineas each ; the Upton Lodge itself had given him 20 guineas , and the lodge of instruction five guineas ; while a few friends had also placed their contributions on his list—including a donation of tos . from anon-Masonic customer of his
, and of which he was particularly proud—with the result that he was IK r ° announce a total of 500 guineas and 10 s . He was very proud of 'he fact that this total placed him at the head of the Stewards of the ? eaiii ° 'ar as - amount vvas concerned , and felt that every member of the Upton Lodge would unite with him in the satisfaction of knowing their lodge had been able to give so Boodan account of itself . Needless to say the report and comments of the vVorshipt ' ul 'aster were heartily received by the members and visitors ; it was certainly a nutter to be proud of .

W . M . handed the Past Master's jewel to him , for which he returned thanks to the lodge . The presentation to Bro . Denniss was deferred . A vote of thanks wis proposed by the W . M . to the Installing Master , Bro . A . Watson , P . M ., S . W ., and unanimously carried , for his valuable services that evening . Bro . Watson acknowledgsd it . A vote of sympathy wasordered by the lodge to be sent to Bro . Denniss on his illness . Letters of regret at inability to attend were read by the Secretary . Propositions for initiation and joining were received , and the lodge was closed .
His state of health not permitting the W . M ., Bro . VV . S . Penley , to preside at the banquet , the chair was occupied by the S . W ., Bro . A . Watson , P . M ., who thus during the evening filled a triple capacity—acting W . M ., Installing Master , and President at the dinner table . After an excellent repast , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given . The presiding Master spoke very briefly when submitting them . Treas ., in reply , said the lodge should be congratulated on their present W . M . ; that it was his ( Bro . Manfield ) first visit to the lodge , which he hoped at some future time to repeat . C , said it was an honour that he was one of the Consecrating Officers of the lodge ; he spoke in general terms of the progress Freemasonry had made , to which all should aspire .

One of those meetings of old boys which popular schools rejoice in with the object of keeping the former members of them in touch with one another in after years took place on Thursday evening , the 14 th instant , at Anderton ' s Hotel , when a very good smoking concert was given , under the presidency of Bro . R . S . Chandler , I . P . M . 2700 , and a representative variety of performers , both vocal and instrumental , conduced to the brightness of the evening , amongst whom we may indicate Miss Emily Rasey , Gold Medallist R . A . M ., well known at Masonic gatherings , Mr . J . Norrie , Miss Violet Friend , of the Gaiety , Mr . Walter Tilbury , and others .
It was due to the kindness of Messrs . Tom Olaxton and Will Oliver that so many of the artistes of the variety stage were able to be present . The general musical arrangements were in the able hands of Messrs . J . H . Hewett , G . Cross-Willett , and E . Eaton Jones , whilst Mr . Eustace Wallace presided at the piano when required . particular gratification to the members of the lodge that at this Festival they had actually secured the first place in point of amount sent up , as on a previous occasion the Steward of the Upton Lodge at one of the Festivals missed the distinction by a few shillings only ; on this occasion the lodge representative had a good surplus , the next list in order being upwards of £ 30 behind , and naturally the workers of No . 1227 , an ! the brethren who had supported the list of the W . M ., were particularly gratified at the splendid result—it was indeed most creditable to all concerned .
The meeting was held at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool-street , on Thursday , Ihe 14 th instant , and was well attended by olficers of the lodge and other memoers and visitors ; the whole of the proceedings being ably presided over by Bro . W . J . Carroll , W . M ., who won general approval and added to his reputation by the minner in waich he performed the different ceremonies . There were four candidites for raising—Bros . Arthur Ekins , Thomas Dorman Carter , Charles J . Gilmer , and Morris C . Cole—in . I all of them were present , and were duly admitted to a participation in the secrets of the
oublime Degree of a M . M . Five of six candidates for passing were present : Bros . Herbert C Houghton , Thomas Saunders , James Avery , Richard Henry Ferguson , and Arthur Ferguson , and they were passed to the Second Degree . In inmiuncing the result of his Stewardship on behalf of the Old People , Bro . Carroll slid thit no less than 40 members of the Upton Lodge had supported him with Life Governorship contributions of 10 guineas each ; the Upton Lodge itself had given him 20 guineas , and the lodge of instruction five guineas ; while a few friends had also placed their contributions on his list—including a donation of tos . from anon-Masonic customer of his
, and of which he was particularly proud—with the result that he was IK r ° announce a total of 500 guineas and 10 s . He was very proud of 'he fact that this total placed him at the head of the Stewards of the ? eaiii ° 'ar as - amount vvas concerned , and felt that every member of the Upton Lodge would unite with him in the satisfaction of knowing their lodge had been able to give so Boodan account of itself . Needless to say the report and comments of the vVorshipt ' ul 'aster were heartily received by the members and visitors ; it was certainly a nutter to be proud of .

One of those meetings of old boys which popular schools rejoice in with the object of keeping the former members of them in touch with one another in after years took place on Thursday evening , the 14 th instant , at Anderton ' s Hotel , when a very good smoking concert was given , under the presidency of Bro . R . S . Chandler , I . P . M . 2700 , and a representative variety of performers , both vocal and instrumental , conduced to the brightness of the evening , amongst whom we may indicate Miss Emily Rasey , Gold Medallist R . A . M ., well known at Masonic gatherings , Mr . J . Norrie , Miss Violet Friend , of the Gaiety , Mr . Walter Tilbury , and others .
It was due to the kindness of Messrs . Tom Olaxton and Will Oliver that so many of the artistes of the variety stage were able to be present . The general musical arrangements were in the able hands of Messrs . J . H . Hewett , G . Cross-Willett , and E . Eaton Jones , whilst Mr . Eustace Wallace presided at the piano when required .
