The Board of Masters was first held , at which the agenda paper for Grand Lodge of 3 rd December was submitted . At the Board of Benevolence the brethren confirmed recommendations made at the Board of Benevolence of October , amounting to £ 140 . The new list contained
the names of 45 petitioners . Of these six were deferred and two dismissed . The remainder were relieved with a total of £ 710 . This was made up of one £ 50 grant , three grants of £ 40 each , six of £ , 30 each , eight of , ( , 20 each , five of £ 15 each , eleven of £ 10 each , and three of £ 5 each .

ENTERTAINMENT AT THE ROYAL MASONIC BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .
On Tuesday evening , the iSth inst ., Dr . Strong-, Hon . Surgeon to the residents of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , East Croydon , and who has recently returned from America after an absence of nine weeks , invited the
residents and friends to a most delightful entertainment at the Hall , consisting of an account of his travels , & c , commencing from his departure from Liverpool in the steam ship Vancouver , over 5000 tons burden , to his return to Liverpool . His lecture , with humorous anecdotes and Yankee mannerisms , descriptions of scenery , with views and photos of different places he had visited , afforded great amusement
and instruction to about sixty ladies and gentlemen . Dr . Strong , who , as well as his talented daughter , is a proficient on the violin , kindly assisted by Mrs . Strong and her daughter , Miss Owen , on the piano ( the latter ladv singing some beautiful songs ) , and Mr . Owen on
the violoncello , discoursed some beautiful music at intervals , affording to all a most enjoyable three hours ' amusement . Votes of thanks were most cordially given to Dr . Strong and his talented family , and to Miss Norris , the Matron , for her excellent arrangements for the comfort of all present .

A preliminary meeting-with the object of making arrangements for the annual festival and ball in Liverpool in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution was held at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , on Friday evening , the 14 th inst . There was a very large and
influential gathering of Masonic chiefs , presided over by Bro . lhomas Whitehead , P . M . 241 . Bro . R . MARTIN , P . G . Treas ., one of the Hon . Sees , of the Charity , read the circular convening thc meeting , which contained the following resolution , passed at the last Court of Governors : " That the annual festival and ball in aid of the funds of the Institution be held in Liverpool in January ,
1 S 85 , and that : he W . M . ' s of lodges , First Principals of chapters , E . C . of Knight Templar Encampments , the W . M . ' s of lodges of Mark Masons , Sovereigns of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Rose Croix , meeting in the Province of West Lancashire , with the members of the General Committee , constitute the Ball Committee , with power to add to their number . " Bro . Councillor T . W . Oakshott , 6 S 0 , was unanimously
elected Chairman of the General Ball Committee ; Bro . T . Whitehead was appointed the Vice-Chairman ; Bros . J . Beesley , P . G . S ., P . M . S 23 , Hon . Treasurer , and Simon Jude , Sec . 241 , the Hon . Secretary of the Committee . It was further resolved that the festival and ball should be held at the Town Hall on the second Tuesday in January next , subject to the approval of the City Council and the convenience of his Worship the Mayor ( Bro . PRESENTATION TO BRO . EDWIN BARE , P . M ., PRECEPTOR OF THE GUELPH LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1685 .
On Thursday evening , the 13 th inst ., a large number of Freemasons assembled at the Town Hall , Leyton , for the purpose of making a presentation to Bro . Edwin Bare , who was first Worshipful Master and one of the founders of the
Guelph Lodge , 1 ( 1 85 , and who had honourably and faithfully filled other offices in Masonic lodges . The presentation took the form of a purse containing 35 guineas and a handsomely illuminated testimonial , on which was engraved the following inscription : — " To Bro . Edwin Bare , P . M ., and one of the founders of the Guelph Lodge , No . 16 S 5 , P . M . of the Leyspring Lodge , No . 1508 , and Precentor of
the Guelph Lodge of Instruction , — Worshipful and eminent brother , your valuable services to Freemasonry in the large district of Leyton by founding the Guelph Lodge of Instruction , and accepting- the onerous and important duties of Preceptor , which you have discharged for more than four years with marked ability and untiring assiduity ; your zeal and influence in inspiring the members of the

Craft with an earnest desire to make themselves acquainted with the tenets of the Order , to work the various degrees and ceremonies with accuracy and impressiveness ; and above a I , your own bright example of what a Mason shoul I be in a lodge as well as out of it , courteous in manner and kindly in disposition , have commended and endeared you to the hearts of all the members with whom you have come in contact , and as a token of their admiration of your
sound , accurate , and brilliant working , and of their great appreciation of your estimable character as a brother , they beg your acceptance of this address and of the accompanying purse of 35 guineas , praying that the Most High may long spare a life of such usefulness and honour to the Craft . A grand banquet was given by this lodge at the Holborn Restaurant , on Tuesday evening , under the presidency of Bro . George Lambert , W . M ., F . S . A ., P . G . Swd . Br ., P . M . 19 S , 503 , 1964 . The election meeting of the lodge had taken place the preceding evening , when Captain
Probyn was elected W . M . for the ensuing year . The dinner was given to commemorate the successful year which the lodge had enjoyed under the Mastership of Bro . Room of the Holborn Restaurant was beautifully decorated , and the dinner was admirably served . The speeches were short , but were directed to the prosperity of the lodge and to the popularity of the Queen's Westminster Volunteer corps . The Grand Officers obtained a most hearty reception , and their toast was responded to by Bro . H . D . Sandeman . Sir John Robinson and Col . Penrose responded
as Visitors to that toast , in which Bro . Lambert referred to the excellent imitation which the Irish Freemasons were making of the Eng lish Masonic Charities by establishing similar institutions in Dublin . Sir John Robinson and Col . Penrose stated that they felt flattered by the allusion which had been made to the Masonic Schools in Ireland , and assured English brethren that they were endeavouring to
carry out in the sister island the principles of Masonry as inculcated by the English Order . Bros . Terry and Binckes responded to the toast of "The Masonic Institutions . " Bro C . W . Thompson proposed "The Health of Bro . G . Lambert , VV . M ., " on whom he bestowed unlimited praise as a Mason , a citizen , a Master of a City company , a friend , a brother , and a man . Bro . Lambert responded . Capt . Probyn responded to the toast of "The VV . M .
Elect . " The other toasts were " The Treasurer , Secretary , and the Officers of the Lodge , " "The Pattenmakers ' Company , " and "Our 'Sisters , ' the Ladies . " An excellent selection of music was performed between the toasts , under the direction of Miss Mary Belval , by Miss Kate Flinn , Miss Mary Belval , Mr . Selwyn Graham , and Mr . J . T . Hutchinson . Miss Marian Weaver and Mr , F , R , Kinkee also assisted at the pianoforte .
Messrs . Smith , Elder , and Co . propose issuing in January , the first volume of their " Dictionary of National Biography . " The publishers hope to complete the work by the end of the century .

( Sir HEDWORTH WILLIAMSON , Bart . ) said the last time he had the honour of presiding over
that lodge in that room they met under similar ciirumstances . They then had to deplore the loss of one who for many years had been the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . John Fawcett ; now they had to deplore the loss ol their Provincial Grand Master . They had not only lost a nood Freemason , but one who was a very good in in , and placed liy circumstances in one of the highest positions in this
realm , and they knew how well he performed the duties of that exalted position . It was not very long since he was thanked by the Right Rev . Prelate the Lord Bishop of Durham for the kindness with which he advocated all good and proper undertakings in the county . The sptaker also alluded to the great interest the Marquis of Londonderry had taken in the Volunteer Artillery , and the sympathy his
lordship , Lady Londonderry , and the family had manifested towards the widows and families who lost their husbands and parents in the sad disaster at Seaham Colliery . They had met that day to present an address of condolence to the family of Lord Londonderry , their Provincial Grand Master , and he had no doubt every one present felt the loss they had sustained .
Bro . the Rev . Canon CUNDILL proposed that the following address of condolence be sent to Lady Londonderry : —• "To the Most Hon . the Marchioness of Londonderry . "Madam , —We , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , officers , and members of the Provincial Gr-ind Lodge of Durham , of Antient Free and Accepted Masons , in Provincial Grand Lodge assembled , beg to express our deep
sorrow at the bereavement with which it has pleased the Great Ruler of the Universe to visit you in the sad and sudden death of your beloved husband , the Most Hon . the Marquis of Londonderry , our esteemed and lamented Provincial Grand Master , and to offer you and each of the members of your family our sincere and heartfelt sympathy with your sorrows .
"As Masons , we mourn the loss from our Order of a distinguished and true-hearted Brother , who by his earnest recognition of the important duties attaching to his exalted office , by the zeal and fidelity with which he endeavoured to discharge those duties , by his great personal kindliness , and , beyond all , by his constant , unwearied , and unremitting efforts to promote the interests and advance the welfare and
prosperity of the Craft in this province , attained in a high degree the confidence , affection , esteem , and regard of every member of the Fraternity . " We venture , therefore , most respectfully to offer our sincere condolence and sympathy , and pray earnestly that the Great Architect of the Universe may support ,

LEVY seconded , the following resolution , which was also carried : " That the melancholy duty has devolved on this Provincial Grand Lodge of recording the decease of the Right
Worshipful Provincial Grand Mastt-r , the Most Hon . the Marquess of Londonderry , which took place on Wednesday , the 5 th November last , at Plas Machynlleth . The late marquis was appointed Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master in March , 1 S 80 , was installed on the 12 th of October in the same year , and ruled the Craft in this province with zeal and fidelity up to the time of his death , esteemed and
respected by the whole of thc Masonic body . The Provincial Grand Lodge desires to express the great grief which the Fraternity entertain at the loss they have experienced , and to record their sense of the great worth of the late Marquis of Londonderry in every relation of life . " The proceedings then terminated , and the Provincial Grand Lodge was closed in form .
According to the City Press , the response which is being made to the proposal to present a ti stimonial to Bro . Alderman Fowler , M . P ., in recognition of his services as Lord Mayor during the past year , is a very heaity one .

On Thursday evening , the 13 th inst ., a large number of Freemasons assembled at the Town Hall , Leyton , for the purpose of making a presentation to Bro . Edwin Bare , who was first Worshipful Master and one of the founders of the
Guelph Lodge , 1 ( 1 85 , and who had honourably and faithfully filled other offices in Masonic lodges . The presentation took the form of a purse containing 35 guineas and a handsomely illuminated testimonial , on which was engraved the following inscription : — " To Bro . Edwin Bare , P . M ., and one of the founders of the Guelph Lodge , No . 16 S 5 , P . M . of the Leyspring Lodge , No . 1508 , and Precentor of
the Guelph Lodge of Instruction , — Worshipful and eminent brother , your valuable services to Freemasonry in the large district of Leyton by founding the Guelph Lodge of Instruction , and accepting- the onerous and important duties of Preceptor , which you have discharged for more than four years with marked ability and untiring assiduity ; your zeal and influence in inspiring the members of the

A grand banquet was given by this lodge at the Holborn Restaurant , on Tuesday evening , under the presidency of Bro . George Lambert , W . M ., F . S . A ., P . G . Swd . Br ., P . M . 19 S , 503 , 1964 . The election meeting of the lodge had taken place the preceding evening , when Captain

Room of the Holborn Restaurant was beautifully decorated , and the dinner was admirably served . The speeches were short , but were directed to the prosperity of the lodge and to the popularity of the Queen's Westminster Volunteer corps . The Grand Officers obtained a most hearty reception , and their toast was responded to by Bro . H . D . Sandeman . Sir John Robinson and Col . Penrose responded
as Visitors to that toast , in which Bro . Lambert referred to the excellent imitation which the Irish Freemasons were making of the Eng lish Masonic Charities by establishing similar institutions in Dublin . Sir John Robinson and Col . Penrose stated that they felt flattered by the allusion which had been made to the Masonic Schools in Ireland , and assured English brethren that they were endeavouring to
carry out in the sister island the principles of Masonry as inculcated by the English Order . Bros . Terry and Binckes responded to the toast of "The Masonic Institutions . " Bro C . W . Thompson proposed "The Health of Bro . G . Lambert , VV . M ., " on whom he bestowed unlimited praise as a Mason , a citizen , a Master of a City company , a friend , a brother , and a man . Bro . Lambert responded . Capt . Probyn responded to the toast of "The VV . M .
Elect . " The other toasts were " The Treasurer , Secretary , and the Officers of the Lodge , " "The Pattenmakers ' Company , " and "Our 'Sisters , ' the Ladies . " An excellent selection of music was performed between the toasts , under the direction of Miss Mary Belval , by Miss Kate Flinn , Miss Mary Belval , Mr . Selwyn Graham , and Mr . J . T . Hutchinson . Miss Marian Weaver and Mr , F , R , Kinkee also assisted at the pianoforte .
Messrs . Smith , Elder , and Co . propose issuing in January , the first volume of their " Dictionary of National Biography . " The publishers hope to complete the work by the end of the century .

( Sir HEDWORTH WILLIAMSON , Bart . ) said the last time he had the honour of presiding over
that lodge in that room they met under similar ciirumstances . They then had to deplore the loss of one who for many years had been the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . John Fawcett ; now they had to deplore the loss ol their Provincial Grand Master . They had not only lost a nood Freemason , but one who was a very good in in , and placed liy circumstances in one of the highest positions in this
realm , and they knew how well he performed the duties of that exalted position . It was not very long since he was thanked by the Right Rev . Prelate the Lord Bishop of Durham for the kindness with which he advocated all good and proper undertakings in the county . The sptaker also alluded to the great interest the Marquis of Londonderry had taken in the Volunteer Artillery , and the sympathy his
lordship , Lady Londonderry , and the family had manifested towards the widows and families who lost their husbands and parents in the sad disaster at Seaham Colliery . They had met that day to present an address of condolence to the family of Lord Londonderry , their Provincial Grand Master , and he had no doubt every one present felt the loss they had sustained .
Bro . the Rev . Canon CUNDILL proposed that the following address of condolence be sent to Lady Londonderry : —• "To the Most Hon . the Marchioness of Londonderry . "Madam , —We , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , officers , and members of the Provincial Gr-ind Lodge of Durham , of Antient Free and Accepted Masons , in Provincial Grand Lodge assembled , beg to express our deep
sorrow at the bereavement with which it has pleased the Great Ruler of the Universe to visit you in the sad and sudden death of your beloved husband , the Most Hon . the Marquis of Londonderry , our esteemed and lamented Provincial Grand Master , and to offer you and each of the members of your family our sincere and heartfelt sympathy with your sorrows .
"As Masons , we mourn the loss from our Order of a distinguished and true-hearted Brother , who by his earnest recognition of the important duties attaching to his exalted office , by the zeal and fidelity with which he endeavoured to discharge those duties , by his great personal kindliness , and , beyond all , by his constant , unwearied , and unremitting efforts to promote the interests and advance the welfare and
prosperity of the Craft in this province , attained in a high degree the confidence , affection , esteem , and regard of every member of the Fraternity . " We venture , therefore , most respectfully to offer our sincere condolence and sympathy , and pray earnestly that the Great Architect of the Universe may support ,

LEVY seconded , the following resolution , which was also carried : " That the melancholy duty has devolved on this Provincial Grand Lodge of recording the decease of the Right
Worshipful Provincial Grand Mastt-r , the Most Hon . the Marquess of Londonderry , which took place on Wednesday , the 5 th November last , at Plas Machynlleth . The late marquis was appointed Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master in March , 1 S 80 , was installed on the 12 th of October in the same year , and ruled the Craft in this province with zeal and fidelity up to the time of his death , esteemed and
respected by the whole of thc Masonic body . The Provincial Grand Lodge desires to express the great grief which the Fraternity entertain at the loss they have experienced , and to record their sense of the great worth of the late Marquis of Londonderry in every relation of life . " The proceedings then terminated , and the Provincial Grand Lodge was closed in form .
According to the City Press , the response which is being made to the proposal to present a ti stimonial to Bro . Alderman Fowler , M . P ., in recognition of his services as Lord Mayor during the past year , is a very heaity one .
