His high character and the soundness of his judgment marked him as an ideal ruler in the Craft , and it was in the full knowledge
that hejwould maintain the high traditions of the Loyalty chair that he ( llro . Rose ) presented Bro . Cunnington to receive at the hands of Bro . Barker , W . M ., the benelitof installation . The pleasing duty next devolved upon the W . M . to present in
the name of the lodge , a Past Master's jewel to Bro . Barker , I . P . A proposition for membership was followed by the announcement that Bro . Cunnington , W . M ., would represent the lodge at the next festival ot the R . M . B . Institution . To mark their appreciation of the services rendered by their newly-installed Master , as J receptor of the Loyalty Lodge of Instruction , the members voted 20 guineas , which
Bro . Cunnington gratefully acknowledged . " Hearty good wishes" having been tendered to the W . M ., and other business disposed of , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting table . Rising to commence the toast list , Bro . George Cunnington , W . M ., received a hearty ovation . Bro . Barker , I . P . M ., assuming the gavel for the submission of "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " had a pleasing task before him . As good wine needed no bush , no words were necessary in securing for the toast a very hearty reception . Bro . Cunnington , by his long Preceptorship of the Loyalty Lodge of Instruction , whose services there the members could never forget , had well-deserved the honour which the lodge had conferred upon him , and the excellent manner in which the initiation ceremony had been rendered was an index of what Bro . Cunnington could accomplish in Freemasonry . He sincerely hoped that there was before the VV . M . a very happy year of office .
Bro . G . Cunnington , W . M ., on rising to reply , said that he felt very deeply the warmth of their reception and the honour they had conferred upon him in electing him to the chair . It had been the ambition of his life to become the Master of the dear old Lodge of Loyalty . It was a very responsible office to aspire to ; but , as in the past , nothing should be wanting on his part to do his best for the lodge over which he was now called to rule . I Ie was also proud of his position as Preceptor of the Loyalty Lodge of Instruction , believing as he did that he possessed the esteem and affection of the brethren ;
and now that he had attained the Master s chair he trusted that they would still rally round him—in which case they would not fail as a lodge to continue the good work carried on by his predecessors , lt was his intention to hold a ladies' night during his year of office , which he hoped might be as successful as the one held last year under Bro . Barker's Mastership . He also hoped that his Stewardship at the forthcoming Festival of the Benevolent Institution might be worthy of the lodge ' s best efforts , and sincerely thanked the members for the donation of 20 guineas to his list .
The VV . M ., in submitting "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , " said they owed much to Bro . Barker for what he had done in the Iodge . He had in past years contributed to a large extent to the harmony of the lodge by acting as its Organist , and whatever office Bro . Barker had undertaken had been carried out with credit and ability . He sincerely hoped that the token of esteem in the form of the Past Master's jewel which the lodge had presented to Bro . Barker would remind him of the pleasant associations of his year of office , and that he might long continue to give them the benefit of his Masonic experience .
Bro . Walter L . Barker , I . P . M ., tendered his sincere thanks for the very hearty manner in which the toast of "The I . P . M . and Installing Master " had been received . Although he had entered upon his year of office with trepidation he had with the able assistance of his officers , whom he warmly thanked , done what he could to promote the prosperity of the Lodge of Loyalty , and if he had given satisfaction to the brethren he had been well repaid for any trouble he had taken in making himself proficient in the ritual of Freemasonry . The members of the lodge had stood by him and sent him up
as Steward to the Centenary Festival of the Boys School with a list of 136 guineas all of which with the exception of five guineas had been contributed from the Loyalty Lodge . He was glad to leave the finances of the lodge stronger than when he took office , notwithstanding additional grants from the funds . While sincerely thinking the brethren for the Past Master's jewel which had been presented to him for past services , he trusted that he might long be spared to render what service he could as Past Master of the lodge .
" The Initiate " who had come well and worthily recommended , received a hearty welcome , and Bro . Mercer suitably replied . The toast of "The Visitors" was responded to by Bros . R . H . Halford , P . P . G . S . D . Herts ; EdmundJ . Morgan , P . M . and Sec . 1571 j G . H . Clarke , W . M . i 7 C 6 ; C . Coram , S . VV . 2552 ; J . Brown , W . M . 144 6 ; and A . Cunnington , S . VV . 1766 . Bro . John Mason , P . G . Std . Br . and representative of the R . M . B . I ., thanked the
Lodge of Loyalty for the unstinted support which had been given to the Alasonic Charities . Reference was made to the grand result of the Bays' Centenary and the consequent difficulty in getting Stewards this year after the strenuous efforts of 1897 . Pleading especially for the aged Freemasons and their widows he regretted that the amount raised last year felt far short of their requirements and he trembled at the thought of falling back upon their invested funds . He felt sure that the Loyalty Lodge would do its best during the coming year .
The Worshipful Master , in proposing "The Past Masters , " paid a tribute to their worth and Masonic experience , feeling that with their support he might enter upon his year of office with confidence . Bros . Arthur Clark and Frank Rose replied , each paying a high eulogy to the special qualifications of Bro . Cunnington for the Master ' s chair . In submitting "The Ofiicers of the Lodge" the W . M . said he was proud to have such an efficient body around him who would do credit to the work in the several offices to which they had been appointed . Bros . Jameson , S . W ., and R . C . Halford , J . W ., thanked the W . M . for his kind words and pledged themselves to do all in their power to make his year of office a successful one .
Bro . C . H . Halford , P . M ., Treas ., also replied . The Tyler ' s toast brought a most enjoyable evening to a close , to the harmony o which Miss Emily Davies , Miss Ethel Bevans , Bros . William Davies , Franklin Clive and Bob Rae contributed , the excellent musical arrangements being under the direction of Bro . William Davies ( St . Paul's Cathedral ) , Bro . A . E . Kipps actintr as accompanist .

M . proposed the usual toasts , and referred in
sympathetic terms tothe recent illness of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M . ln giving "The Grand Officers , " the W . M . said that no institution could get on without some guiding hand , and it was a good thing that all lodges had the Grand Lodge to refer to in difficult circumstances . From its work in the past , they should feel grateful to those who had spent their time in looking to the affairs of the Craft , for they had done their work well . 1 Ie was glad to say their lodge possessed two Grand Officers , one of whom—Bro . Philippe , was present .
Bro . J . Kew , P . A . G . P ., endorsed the remarks of the W . M ., and said that all questions were considered on the grand principles of brotherly love , relief and truth . Bro . Oscar Philippe , P . G . S . B ., also replied , remarking that the more the beauties of Freemasonry were recognised , the better it would be for all nations . He was delighted to see so many familiar faces present and . he hoped the lodge would continue its prosperous career for many years . Bro . H . Slyman , P . M ., proposed " The Health of the W . M ., " and said he had the
honour to initiate the W . M ., and few Masters had initiated a more conscientious member—one who was a credit to Freemasonry and who would do the right thing on all occasions . Bro . Hutchinson had been a credit to the lodge and they congratulated him on reaching the chair , feeling sure he would discharge his duties thoroughly and well . They would bear in mind that some Masters were nervous and required encouragement and they would give their W . M . that encouragement by at once upstanding and wishing him long life and prosperity . Bro . T . Hutchinson , VV . M ., in reply , after thanking Bro . ( Slyman , said life would not be worth living unless there was a little sentiment . He didjnot like people with too much , but one without any was a very disagreeable person . There was a little senfr

Cunnington could accomplish in Freemasonry . He sincerely hoped that there was before the VV . M . a very happy year of office .
Bro . G . Cunnington , W . M ., on rising to reply , said that he felt very deeply the warmth of their reception and the honour they had conferred upon him in electing him to the chair . It had been the ambition of his life to become the Master of the dear old Lodge of Loyalty . It was a very responsible office to aspire to ; but , as in the past , nothing should be wanting on his part to do his best for the lodge over which he was now called to rule . I Ie was also proud of his position as Preceptor of the Loyalty Lodge of Instruction , believing as he did that he possessed the esteem and affection of the brethren ;
and now that he had attained the Master s chair he trusted that they would still rally round him—in which case they would not fail as a lodge to continue the good work carried on by his predecessors , lt was his intention to hold a ladies' night during his year of office , which he hoped might be as successful as the one held last year under Bro .
