THE SCHOOL ELECTIONS .
The autumn School Elections were held on the days appointed , that of the Girls' School taking place at the Quarterly General Court of Governors ancl Subscribers on Thursday , the 13 th inst ., and that of the Boys' School on the day following . At both
Courts the order of proceedings was the same , the poll being opened at 1 p . m . or as soon as the regular business was at an end , and closing promptly at 3 p . m . For the
ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS there was an approved list of 27 candidates and 13 vacancies to be filled , London furnishing nine of the former and having a part interest with one of the Provinces in three other cases , while
the remaining ' 15 g irls derived their claims from either Provinces or Districts abroad . Of the London nine there were live elected and four who failed ; the live successful girls being placed at Nos . 3 and 4 with 526 7 and 5156 voles respectively ; at Nos . 9
and 10 with 4680 votes in the ease of the former and 4 66 7 , of which 3349 votes were brought forward from the last two elections , in the latter ; and at No . 12 with 4334 votes . As regards the four who failed , one took the highest unsuccessful place wilh
3501 votes ; one polled 2105 votes including 1204 obtained in April ; another who started with 1199 votes in hand , left off with I 592 ; and the remaining girl scored I 3 I 0 votes ; all these ,
therefore , stand well for the election in April , 18 99 . ( Jf thc thrce girls who had claims on London and one of the Provinces , the one from Londuii and Surrey obtained second place with 5340 votes ; the Kent and London gill obtained 3327 votes , of which
2009 were polled in April , and 1318 on this occasion ; and thc third , hailing from North and East Yorkshire and London , scored 1512 votes . The Provincial candidates were 15 in number , and secured seven vacancies , the Surrey girl , who had only this
chance of winning , being placed at the head of thc poll with 5434 votes , of which 726 were already to her credit . One of thc three Middlesex cases took the fifth place with 5017 votes , and the West Yorkshire girl stood next wilh 4984 votes . Devonshire
supplied the seventh successful candidate , who raised the 1716 votes from April to a final score of 4 836 , while one of the two West Lancashire lassies stood eighth with 4801 , and the other llth with 4563 votes , one of tsvo g irls from Essex bringing up

the rear with 39 60 votes , of which 2439 ' * heen obtai-ned at the two preceding elections . Of the Unsuccessful Provincial candidates , the Northumberland and Durham child , notwithstanding that she already had 27 S 8 votes to the good , was only
able to finish third among those who failed , her score reaching 3319 , the girl with claims on Lincolnshire , North and East Yorkshire , and two other Provinces , being next with 2681 , of which 1539 were already to her credit , a second of the Middlesex trio
polling 2157 votes . The Kent girl polled 1839 votes , and the Valparaiso girl 1042 votes , while the third Middlesex , the second Essex , and the Sussex candidates obtained S 9 6 , 514 , and 414 votes respectively . Thus even the least successful on this occasion will have a fair number of' votes in hand when the
time for another ballot comes round . As regards the votes brought forward and issued for this ballot , there were 18 , 452 of the former and 77 , 319 of the latter , giving a total available of
95 , 771 . But of those issued onl y 70 , 796 were used , the number unused or spoiled being 6523 . For the
ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS , there were originally 45 candidates , but one of the boys hailing from the Provinces was withdrawn subsequently to the issue of
the voting papers , and therefore , the number of those competing for the 26 vacancies which were declared at the July Court was 44 . Of these London furnished 15 , and had a part interest with one or other of the Provinces in two others . The
remain-. ing 27 cases hailed from the Provinces or Abroad . London secured the election of eight of its 15 boys , and of one of the two in which it was in part interested , the highest place on the poll being a new case , who polled 6164 votes . The boy with
claims on London and Middlesex took second place with 517 6 votes , of which 731 were brought forward from April . The sixth on the poll brought forward 16 43 votes , and augmented that number to 4896 , while the eighth obtained 4831 at the first time of
asking . Nos . 12 and 13 scored 4675 and 45 8 7 votes respectively , the former , who had this solitary chance of gaining admission into the School , having 431 votes to the good at starting . No . 17 , who started with
315 votes in hand polled in all 4249 , while No . 25 , with 555 in hand , finished up with 3 8 55 votes . Of the seven unsuccessful boys from the Metropolis , the three that made anything of a show stood on the list at Nos . io , 16 , and 23 , and scored 1339 ,
2370 , and 1244 votes respectively , while the London and Surrey boy will carry forward 1660 votes to the election in April next . Of the 27 Provincial lads East Lancashire , West Yorkshire , and Staffordshire furnished two candidates apiece and in each case
were successful in carrying them both ; the two from East Lancashire at Nos . 7 and 14 , the former with 4837 and the latter with 4470 votes . Tlie boys from West Yorkshire came out at Nos . 23 and 24 , with 390 1 and 3 88 7 votes respectively , while one of
the Staffordshire lads secured the l 8 lh vacancy with 4245 votes and the other came in last with 3 813 votes . Cornwall placed its candidate third on the poll with 508 7 votes , of which all but 3 8 were given at this election ; while the youth from
Northumberland and South Wales ( E . D . ) , who had 794 votes in hand , came out Kith with a total of 4263 . Durham and Bucks carried their candidate at the lirst attempt with 4139 votes , thereby securing
for him the 20 th place ; the Lincolnshire boy was ninth with 4 813 votes ; the Worcestershire fourth with 4957 ; thc Suffolk 19 th with 4151 votes ; and the Sussex lad 21 st with 4123 votes . Kent sent up only one candidate who polled 4770 votes
