paragon of perfection , while the stroke of a boat was always thought to be the best man , although there might b ; much better oarsmen in the boat than he . He ( Lord Addington ) was afraid that his position was very much like that , but so long as he had their confidence he shoild esteem it a privilege to do what he could for that great charitable organisation . Charity after all was the chief of the virtues , and a man who was a good Mason was certainly a better Christian . ( Applause . ) He spoke with regret of the
loss the province had sustained in the death of their esteemed brother , Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild , and thanked Bro . Woollett for the trouble he had taken in compiling the new Masonic calendar . He found that in Buckinghamshire there were no fewer than 612 Masons in the 19 lodges which comprised the province , while another lodge was about to be consecrated . ( Applause . ) He was also pleased to know that th »<** e 612 members
had no fewer than 93 S voles lor ihe Boys' Masonic Institutio 1 , 650 for the Girls' , and 1440 for the Old People , a very satisfactory state of affairs . ( Applause . ) In conclusion , he proposed " Thc Health of the D . P . G . M ., Bro . J . E . Bowen , " who , he said , did the greater part of the administrative work of the province . The toast was well received .
Bro . BOWEN suitably responded , and proposed " The Visitors , " which was responded to by Bro . KIRCHHOFFER . The remaining toasts were " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past ; " " The Herschel Lodge , No . 1894 ; " and the Tyler ' s toast . Grand
Officers , his lordship was conducted to his seat , and the Prov . Grand Chapter was opened in solemn and ancient form , and the Grand Superintendent was saluted , as were the Prov . G . H . and Prov . G . J . The minutes and accounts were passed , the latter showing the excellent finant ial position of the province .
The roll of chapters was called , and the following list of officers were appointed , and those present were invested for the ensuing 12 months : Comp . J . S . Eastes , P . Z . 503 , 709 ( re-appointed ) ... Prov . G . H . „ A . Penfold , P . Z . 913 , 13 , 1472 ... ... Prov . G . I .

The banquet—a cold collation—was served in the upper part of the building by Messrs . Spiers and Pond , and on the platform , which was beautifully decorated with flags and choice flowers , a band of musicians played during the repast several selections . " The Queen and Royal Arch Masonry" having been drunk with honours ,
The GRAND SUPERINTENDENT proposed that of " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . Z . of the Order . " He briefly said they all knew how much Royal A rch Masonry had progressed under his Royal Highness , as had Craft Masonry , and the least they could do on these festive occasions was to dedicate a glass of wine to his Royal Highness ' s health .
Comp . H . J . BUTTER , P . Z . and S . E . 913 , P . P . G . Soj ., was then called upon to propose the next toast . He said he rose with a great deal of pleasure , in response to his lordship ' s command , to propose the toast next upon the list , and he felt a great reliance that it was one that would be received by them with the greatest enthusiasm , it was that of " The Right Hon . Earl Amherst , Pro Grand Z . ( cheers ) , the Grand H ., the Grand J ., and the Grand Officers
, Present and Past . " He was exceedingly pleased to see their Ex-Comp . Coupland , whose name would be coupled with the toast , with them that day , and hoped to have the pleasure of seeing him for many years to come . He attributed Comp . Coupland ' s attendance to the fact that their G . Superintendent was present . His lordship ' s presence wasa great and unfailing source of pleasure to every member of the Pattison Lodge and Chapter . They regretted his absence at their Prov . Grand Lodmeeting
ge , but were delighted to see him once more amongst them . There was a great deal more that he should like to say of the splendid qualities and grand Masonic work done by his lordship , were his lordship not present ; but they all knew and appreciated that work , and the great success that had attended it . He knew also that the work done in Grand Chapter by their Grand H . and J . was well done , and he asked them to drink the toast with the enthusiasm it deserved .
Comp . COUPLAND , in response , said that Comp . Butter had left him very little to say , especially with reference to their Grand Superintendent , but he remembered his lordship being first installed at Chatham , by Bro . Beach , many years ago , and that was something Comp . Butter did not know anything about . ( Cheers and laughter . ) Comp . Beach was Grand ¦
superintendent of the province of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , and those who saw him now , coming into Grand Chapter , would find him as good a man and Mason as ever he was . Their Grand H . and j . were two gentlemen who were examples of good Masonry , and in their hands , and those of the Grand Officers of Grand Chapter , its success and prosperity would continue . He thanked them for coupling his name with the toast .
Comp . EASTES then rose and said that their Pro Grand Z ., and G . Superintendent had kindly placed the gavel in his hands to enable him to propose the next toast . It was an honour that he felt proud of—it was to propose the toast of " The Right Hon . Earl Amherst , G . Superintendent of the Province of Kent . " They knew , as well as he did , that they would not like to drink that toast in half glasses of wineso let them
, fill up bumpers , and do honour to it and their beloved Grand Superintendent . In the Province of Kent they had a goodly number of lodges and chapters , and they knew that most cf its prosperity was due to the zeal and assiduity which their Grand Superintendent had shown for the welfare of Masonry—both Craft and Royal Arch . They looked around them and
saw the Koyal Arch flourishing , making great strides , and doing exceedingly well . He was looking , only the other day , through a work issued b y authority . In it he found that there were 46 provinces , including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight . In those provinces were 1531 lodges and 523 chapters , or rather more than a third less chapters than lodges . Kent had 64 lodges and 27 chapters . Years ago , when their Grand Superintendent took over the command of their province , they were
