After the dinner the brethren were photographed . 'The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts having been honoured , the I . P . M . proposed the toast of " The W . M . " He said the brethren quite understood the nature of the toast that he was about to propose ; it was that of their VV . M . 'They had in their W . M . one who was acceptable to the whole lodge . Many of those present had had the pleasure of knowing Bro . Jacobs for many years , and had found him to be a man and a Mason , good and true . He trusted their W . M . would have health and strength to carry out his duties to the approbation of the lodge , and he asked them to drink his health in bumpers .
The W . M ., who was received most cordially , said he thanked them one and all for their kind and hearty reception of the toast , and also for placing him in his present proud position as W . M , of their old and honourable lodge . At that moment he was not in a position to thank them as he felt they deserved , but hoped upon some future occasion , and also by his endeavours to discharge the duties of the office he was proud to hold , to thank them for their enthusiastic reception of the toast of his health . Our worthy and esteemed Bro . Jacobs , who has lately sustained a severe domestic aflliction , and has illness still in his house , here retired amid the good wishes and respect of all present .
Bro . McQueen , by virtue of his office , then assumed the chair , and in a few wellchosen sentences explained to the brethren the cause of their W . M . 's early departure . Bro . G . Davies , P . M ., then proposed the toast of "The Installing Oflicer . " Hc said it was a very happy experience for him to propose the toast , because it gave him an opportunity of repeating and endorsing every word he had previously said in the lodge . Bro . McQueen had performed the duty of Installing Oificer in a manner never excelled ir . their lodge . It was a masterly effort on the part of Bro . McQueen , and he asked them to drink the toast heartily . "
Bro . McQueen , in response , said his duties that day had caused him much and serious thought , and he was pleased if he had done the work to their satisfaction , but he would be much better pleased if he thought that he had made an impression on the minds of the brethren present . 'The ceremony of installation was one that admitted of no tampering with . It must bc given and received as a solemn and inspiring ceremony , and then it was appreciated as it should be—not a mere matter of gabble , but something that should for ever remain with , and be remembered by , every brother who heard
its sublime ritual , and saw and understood its work and meaning . Their system was one that every Mason should thoroughly grasp and understand . It was a regular progressive science from the truth to the being , and from the being to the sublime , and if in his rendering of the ritual tint day or during his year of ofiice he had discharged his duties in such a manner as would impress the brethren with those sublime truths , such would be his reward for all his labour . He thanked them for their kind reception of thc toast .
Bro . Cleal , in responding for " The Past Masters , " assured the brethren that it was a " labour of love " on the part of the Past Masters to support the W . M . by every means in their power , and Bro . Jacobs was capable of working the various Degrees to their satisfaction . He was exceedingly sorry Bro . Jacobs could not stay with them longer than he had ; but their W . M . had had domestic affliction , owing to the recent death of a beloved child and the dangerous illness of another at the present moment . Bro . Jacobs' interest in the lodge had been shown by his presence that night under the great difficulties of his domestic affairs .
Bro . Milbourne , as a Past Master of their old lodge , would always give that assistance to the VV . M . which the Past Masters readily gave when it was required ; but that assistance was not always wanted , because the VV . M . s of their lodge were , and had always been , capable of discharging the duties of their oilice without assistance . Those who had gone before required no assistance from the Past Masters , and those who were
coming on would do the same . He regretted most sincerely the great afil . ction that had overtaken their W . M ,, and after , in eloquent terms , advocating the claims of their ledge and other lodges of instruction , concluded by wishing the Iodge every prosperity-Past Masters Bros . Davies , Bell , Syer , and Turton having suitably responded to the toast ,
Hro . Jamblin also responded , and excused himself for the brevity of the remarks , he intended to make upon that occasion by sta'ing that "unaccustomed as he was to public speaking , " & c Then the brethren knew what was to follow , and , although our reverend and esteemed brother assured the brethren that his was not in any way a humorous speech , yet his witty and , at the same time , eloquent and learned turning of his sentences to thc best account , delighted the brethren . He had been a Mason for
some 35 years , and delighted them by relating some of his experiences in Masonry during that time . For quite 20 minutes our good brother kept on , now humorous , and then serious , till at the conclusion of a long and brilliant speech he resumed his seat amid the long and continued applause of the brethren . Bros . Jolly , Tucker , Hill , Wheatley , and others responded to the toast of " The Visitors . " Miss Nellie Roberts , Miss Jessie Phillips , Mr . P . Wilks , Bros . Ireland , W . F . Cheesman , Hart , and Sid Carter sang sentimental and comic songs , and added much to the pleasures of the evening .
