Westminster Vestry—Courageous Conduct Of The Vestry Clerk.
WESTMINSTER VESTRY—COURAGEOUS CONDUCT OF THE VESTRY CLERK .
Bro . J . E . Smith , W . M . of the Abbey Lodge , is well known to many of our readers . In his position as Clerk of the Westminster Vestry , he gave the other day evidence that he has the courage of his opinions , as appears from the following , which we take from the Local Government Journal : " Al a meeting of thc Vestry held on Wednesday , reference was made to a post-card that had been circulated in connection with thc selection of a Chairman .
" Mr . J . E . SMITH , the Vestry Clerk , said : lhat , speaking in the presence of the author and the publisher of the post-card to which reference had been made , he was much obliged for the opportunity of denying , in thc most complete and absolute manner possible , any knowledge ol tlie matter to which the card alluded . He had received advice as to the action which might be taken , but for the present he could only say that he was sorry the Vestry should have been troubled with so mean , so cowardly , so vulgar ,, and so contemptible a production .
" The outspoken statement caused considerable contusion in thc Vestry , and cries ol expel the member were raised during the hubbub . " Mr . VEKITY , ot St . Margaret ' s , moved that the writer of the post-card should be expelled . " No action was , however , then taken , and in all probability the Vestry Clerk
will ci nimence an action for libel against the anonymous slabber in the dark ; anyway the matter cannot lie dormant , cither the Vestry must put itself right with its Vestry Clerk , or a higher authority do it for them . " The following is a copy of the post-card referred to : " Westminster , June , 189 * 5 . "Sir , —You are requested to vote for the Vestry Clerk ' s candidate , theieby ensuring ' Dual Controlc . ' This is strictly under the ' Rose . '"

M ., who accompanied the gift with a few kindly and appropriate words which were duly acknowledged . Lodge was closed , and , after a well-served banquet , thc usual toasts received hearty recognition .
In giving " Thc Grand Odicers , " the W . M . referred to the presence of Bro . W . M . Stiles , G . Treas ., who had worked hard for Fieemasonry for many years and whu thoroughly deserved the collar he wore . Bro . W . M . Stiles , G . Treas ., in response , said he could not speak too highly of the Pro G . M . who had done so much to forward the best interests of the Craft . Knowing the interest the Pro G . M . had taken in the Craft , they were glad to find his health wis so much improved that they might expect his active support again . The Dep . G . M .
was often in Grand Lodge , and they were all aware of what he had done in the cause of Charity . With reference to the Grand Oflicers , there was one present who thoroughly appreciated the kind reception given him , seeing he derived so much support from thc brethren of that lodge . That was his lirst opportunity of being at the Anglo-American Lodge , although he had had numerous invitations , but he was more than delighted tu sec his good friend , Bro . Skinner , in the chair , as they had heen boys together . He
congratulated the lodge on possessing a Master who had at his lingers' ends the ritual ol the Order , and he had to thank Bro . Skinner for the opportunity of being present . 'The VV . M . then briefly gave " The Sister Grand Lodges of the United States of America and Canada , " and said the lodge had entertained some 120 Americans , including seven or eight Grand Masters . It was impossible forhini to tell them the magiiilicent veceptiun he received in America in company with their Secretary . A similar toast was proposed in America on their behalf .
Bro . G . Reynolds , P . M ., Sec , in reply , expressed his regret that General Smith was not with them , as he would not arrive in this country until Friday . As a member of the Veteran Lodge of Illinois hc ( Bro . Reynolds ) begged to give the hearty congratulations of that lodge . They had received a very interesting communication , which had been framed and hung in their lodge room , from General Shryock , the Grand Master of Maryland , extending a cordial invite to the brethren to visit America and visit the new Masonic Temple . With a letter of introduction from thc Secretary of the
Anglo-Ainerican Lodge , any brother would be heartily received . I n conclusion , he hoped that during the enduing year they would have the pleasure of seeing many American visitors . Bro . ( 5 . H . Reynolds , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the VV . M ., " said that foitunately for him the toast was an extremely easy one to propose , as Bro . Skinner was well known as an earnest worker in the lodge , in the various Charities , and in other lodges . After considerable difficulty he ( the LP . M . ) had found out thc various positions
the W . M . had held in Freemasonry . Bro . Skinner was a P . M . of one of the uldei-t lodges in London La 'Tolerance ; I' . Z . of two chapters—thc Vane and Covent Garden ; P . M . of the Old Kent Mark Lodge ; J . D . of the Prince of Wales Ark Mariners ; and other posts in the Rose Croix and Secret Monitor . The VV . M . was a Vice-Patron of the Masonic Institutions , and had represented the Anglo-American Lodge in America . They could therefore congratulate themselves on having elected him to thc chair .
liro . J . Skinner , P . M ., VV . M ., briefly thanked the I . P . M . for his far too flalteriii |{ remarks . Having by their kindness been elected to the position ot W . M ., he would do his best to retain the confidence reposed in him . The Worshipful Master then gave "The I . P . M . and Past Masters , " and refeneJ to the set vices rendered to the lodge by Bro . G . H . Reynolds , I . P . M ., to whom they were grateful . Every VV . M . of the lodge had installed his successor , and the I . P . M . was no exception to the rule .
liro . G . II . Reynolds , I . P . M ., returned thanks , and referred to the excellent abidance he had received from liro . Kedge , P . M ., in thc installation ceremony . Bros . Woolley , P . M ., and Kedge , P . M . also responded . "The Visitors" were replied to by Bro . C . Rawle , W . M . 23 G 9 , who alluded to tlie fact , that by a mistake , he was not a founder of that lodge . They were pleased tu attend the lodge ancl witness the friendly feelings existing between brethren from acn" * the water , and hoped thc lodge would continue to prosper , and the VV . M . have a successful year of ollice .
Bro . J . Passmore lidwards also replied , and referred to the fact that thc visitui » dominated the assembly , ln the letter asking him to attend , the brother said this li « l | ' c represented the two great actors in modern civilisation , the two great nations of the world . This lodge represented universal civilisation . If there was one thing thoroug hlv cosmopolitan in this world it was Freemasonry . It was the only universal brollierhuuJ extant , and he should liked to have had time to speak of its future possibilities . Bros . VV . A . Scurrah , Vice-President Board of General Purposes , Gresham , 11 ""'' LaneFendickand Buxtonalso replied .
, , , "The Treasurer , Secretary , and Ollicors , " and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . Bro . 11 . W . Schartau , Org ., conducted the musical arrangements , and was assisted I'V Uro . VV . Bradford , Master J . C . Woulley ( son of liro . Woolley , P . M . ) , who gain ? encores for a meritorious rendering of a couple of songs , Aliss Pattie Hughes , and All ** " Jeannic Rankin .

In giving " Thc Grand Odicers , " the W . M . referred to the presence of Bro . W . M . Stiles , G .
Bro .
Bros . VV . A .
