VV . M ., said that on account of the lateness of the evening , there was not time to do justice to that toast . The brethren knew that Bro . Mordey had gone through all the offices of that lodge with very great credit indeed , and with great satisfaction to the members . It was a serious matter to have to propose the health of the VV . M . for the first time , and having just vacated that chair , he knew something about the

nature of the duties , but he was sure they had found in Bro . Mordey a good VV . M ., for he had given them an insight of his work , and would perform his duties in the best possible manner . _ He ( the I . P . M . ) had always felt a pride and satisfaction in being connected with the Honor Oak Lodge simply because the work was so beautifully done , more especially by the officers . Their VV . M . had given them a

specimen of his very best working , and would do his utmost in the future , and outshine all his predecessors . Bro . George Mordey , VV . M ., said he was much obliged to the I . P . M . for having proposed his health , and to the brethren for having received it so kindly . That was the red-letter day of his life , and having arrived at the position he had that evening , and being a young Mason , the kindly

expressions of the I . P . M . had deeply touched his heart . He could assure them that what he had done in the past he would endeavour to do in the future . His feelings for Masonry were such that it was impossible he could ever attempt more than he had done . He had always endeavoured to do the best he could towards the lodge , and during his year in the chair would try to discharge his

duties to the satisfaction of all the members and with credit to himself . The initiate , Bro . W . Williams , in reply to the toast of his health , heartily thanked the members for admitting him into their honourable Society , which had been his desire and ambition for many years . The trust reposed in him he hoped wo uld never be abused , and he would at all times try

to become a worthy member . The W . M . next gave "The Past Masters . " It was quite necessary , he said , that there should be P . M . ' s , and he could assure them they formed a great feature in Masonry , for it was from the pioneers of all things that they had to take their rule and guidance . Those who had gone before knew better how to manage the affairs , and they had therefore a

right to take their orders and listen to the advice of those who had cleared the roads for them . Bro . Darch , the I . P . M ., had been many years a Mason , and had served the office of W . M . in another lodge in a worthy manner . The members of this lodge had seen quite sufficient of that brother in the minor office , and had witnessed his working and the genial manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the lodge .

Bro . Hooper , P . M ., had been a very energetic and hard working member , and proved himself a good Master during the time he occupied the chair . Bro . Hartley , P . M ., who officiated as Secretary , was also a thoroughly good hard working Mason in every sense , and did a vast amount of good to the lodge , and was therefore deserving of all the praise that could possibly be bestowed upon him . Bro .

Hammond , P . M ., was now acting as Steward and he thanked him for undertaking that office , for he was well-known in Masonry and had proved himself of great service to the lodge . Last , but by no means least , of the P . M . ' s , was Bro . Hopekirk , whom the members were glad to welcome

as a Past Grand Officer , as well as the first VV . M . of the lodge . Bro . Darch , I . P . M ., returned thanks to the brethren for the P . M . ' s jewel and collar presented to him , and Bros . Hammond , P . M ., and Hopekirk , P . M ., also responded to the toast .

Bro . A . H . Scurrah , P . P . G . S . of W . Middlesex , replying for " The Visitors , " said it was a great pleasure to him to be present to witness the installation of the W . M . in so admirable a manner . The VV . M . and he were connected in other lodges and chapters , and he was therefore pleased to congratulate him on attaining : the summit of his ambition , and also to congratulate the brethren in having so good and

thorough a Mason to preside over them . Bro . W . M . Stiles said he would yield to none in the great pleasure it had been to him , as the W . M . of 19 S 7 , to see the installation of the W . M . of 19 S 6 " , and he hoped the feeling existing between those W . M . ' s would long continue . Bros . Wise , Arnold , and Knight also replied . "The Treasurer and Secretary" having been duly honoured , the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings .

Barnato Lodge ( No . 2265 ) , —PRESENTATION TO BRO . C . F . HOGARD , P . G . STD . Abrahams , Peace and Harmony Lodge , Dutoitspan , were elected joining members . Bro . J . M . Polak was passed to the Degree of F . C . The VV . M . then said that , as they were aware , he had a most pleasing task

to perform . At their last meeting they said everything they could think of that was good and kind of Bro . Hogard ^ who had acted as I . P . M . at the consecration of the lodge and also since Bro . Da Silva , P . M ., left for the Cape , but they wished to put in more than words what they felt for him , and therefore they considered and voted him a Past Master ' s jewel . It was all they could do for him

, but Bro . Barnato had added a diamond , which would enhance the value of the gift . He only hoped Bro . Hogard would in wearing the jewel feci the same pleasure that he ( the W . M . ) felt in pinning it on his breast . Bro . C F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., acting I . P . M ., said he could hardly nnd words in which to express his thanks to the W . M . and members of the lodge for their liberality in presenting him with the jewel , and for the kindness he had at all times

received in the lodge since its foundation . He had the pleasure of being one of the founders , and since the consecration had attended every meeting and done what he could for the interest and welfare of the lodge . For the valuable jewel he begged to tender his sincere thanks , and especially to Bro . H . Barnato for generously presenting the diamond . He accepted it with grateful thanks , but he was

sure he need not say that he did not require that mark of their affection , for he had at all times received such kindness from them , both in and out of the lodge , that he did not want that outward sign of what they always felt for him . The jewel bears the following inscription : "Presented to W . Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . S . B ., by the brethren of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , as a

token of appreciation of his valuable services as Acting I . P . M . March 17 , 1 S 90 . The diamond presented by Bro . H . I . Barnato . " On the motion of the W . M ., seconded by the Secretary , the sum of £ 2 ios . was voted to the Binckes' Pension Indemnity Fund . The lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to a choice repast . The usual toasts were subsequently honoured .

Bro . Jabez Hogg , P . G . D ., returned thanks on behalf of " The Grand Officers , " and said he did not think he had ever heard the re-election of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , as M . W . G . M ., proposed in such eloquent and felicitous terms as those used by the Right Hon . the Lord Mayor at the last meeting of Grand Lodge . When he ( Bro . Hogg ) first entered Masonry it was no uncommon matter to find lodges closing up every year , and thus the lodge in which he was made became from No . 201 to No .

150 , showing that Masonry was shrinking or decreasing . From that time forward , and especially during the time the present Grand Master had presided , Masonry had extended on all sides and in every direction , and had now become one of the largest bodies of the kind in the country . It was not only large , but most influential , and he predicted that it would become more and more influential , and the wider it grew the better for the good of mankind in general . The brethren on his left had learned for the first time that

brotherly love , relief , and truth were the most prominent features of the Order . They were all joined in a bond of good fellowship , and it was that universal brotherhood that would bind Masons in universal love in all the four quarters of the globe . He was glad that night to have the pleasure and honour of being present at one of the younger lodges . He heard from the brethren on his risrht that the

working in the lodge was really of a very distinguished character . It was his good fortune to be present at an older lodge—the Lodge of Israel—when his esteemed Bro Hogard had a very beautiful present made him for services rendered to that lodge , and it was his good fortune that night to see him again honoured . Bro . Hogard richly deserved all , for no man interested himself more than he in Masonry ,

and therefore that lodge had done right in asking him to accept the honour of a Past Master's jewel . Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , P . A . G . D . C ., also replied . Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., acting I . P . M ., said he thought they had done full and proper homage to the preliminary toasts , and had now arrived at the toast of the evening— "The Health of the W . M . " They had had

good testimony from the Grand Officers , who had spoken of the way in which the work had been performed . They had in their good friend the W . M . an old and tried P . M . of the Craft , and one who had done good suit and service , therefore when they elected him to the chair they elected a brother who knew the proper way to perform the various duties of his office . The way in which Bro . Jessop had

discharged the duties in the lodge in the various ceremonies , and the way in which he had presided at the banquet table had equally commended itself to them , for he united in his own person those two things—the suaviter in modo and fortiter in . re . He hoped that in their lodge the W . M . would never be called upon to exercise the latter virtue , but should that time come he would do that as well as he had done

the suaviter in modo . Bro . M . J . Jessop , P . M . 1261 , VV . M ., in response , remarked that the brethren always said more than their VV . M . deserved , at least it had been so since he had occupied the chair . He should not say more than that from the bottom of his heart he thanked them for their kindness , which seemed endless .

The Initiates was duly given , and replied to by Bros . Lewis and Abrahams . Bro . I . Zacharie , in response to the toast of "The Visitors , " said it afforded him great pleasure to be present for two reasons . The first was that he had had the pleasure of meeting the W . M ., who was an old and dear friend of his , and who belonged to the same lodge many

years ago . The second was to be present at the initiation of an old friend , Bro . Lewis , whom he had known for many years , and whose career he had watched , and he was sure that brother would be an ornament to that lodge and their Institution at large . The work he had seen that night any Mason might be proud of . That lodge was , he might say " , a cosmopolitan lodge , and he was pleased to visit it for the

first time . On behalf of the visitors he would say they felt very grateful for the kind reception they had received , and only hoped they would have the opportunity of meeting the members on many and many occasions . Bros . B . Barnato , Hart , and Rivers having replied , Bro . F . Binckes , P . G . S . B ., also replied , and returned

sincere thanks for the very great kindness he had received from the members . He obtained their confidence on the night of the consecration , and believed he had done nothing to forfeit it . There were in the lodge good friends and members who had done good suit and service in connection with one sphere with which he had been connected , and he was sure they would in the future continue to do so .

Ihe Past Masters was next given by the VV . M ., who called upon Bro . Da Silva 205 , to reply on behalf of Bro . Jos . Da Silva , P . M ., now absent at the Cape . Bro . Da Silva , 205 , on behalf of his son , tendered hearty thanks , assuring the members that he would write and inform their P . M . of the kindness with which his name had been mentioned .

Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., acting I . P . M ., said he felt it a great honour when asked to be a founder , and a still greater honour when asked to become the I . P . M . As an old P . M . he felt called upon to do what he could for the good of Freemasonry and for that

lodge . The Harnato Lodge started under good auspices , under two years ago , and those auspices had been fully proved since that time . They started with some eight or 10 founders , and they now numbered , he believed , between 50 and 60 members , and he thought there were few lodges that

Craft Masonry.

could show such a record in that short space of time . They had already sent up four or five Stewards to the Charities . Those Charities were the brightest jewels in Freemasonry of which any lodge could boast . For the very kind manner in which the VV . M . had proposed his health he returned

sincere thanks , and assured them that as long as he had health to attend and wear upon his breast the jewel presented to him that night , so long he hoped his services would be at the disposal of that lodge . " The Officers " was duly honoured , and the Tyler ' s toast closed a successful meeting .

PROVINCIAL MEETINGS .

ARDWICK . Ardwick Lodge ( No . 2185 ) . —The third installation of this successful lodge took place at the Midland Hotel , on Monday , the 10 th inst . There was a large and influential assembly of the Fraternity to witness the installation of Bro . Councillor Chesters-Thompson , S . W ., W . M .

elect , a very popular member of the lodge . It must have been very gratifying to him to see such a large concourse of brethren rally round him at such an interesting time . The large lodge room , which had been very prettily decorated specially for the occasion , presented a very animated appearance when at the opening the lodge was well filled .

Thn lodge was opened by Bro . William Eitzgerald , VV . M . The minutes of the previous regular and emergency meetings were read and confirmed . The chair was then taken by Bro . J . Truelove Richardson , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., who was the Installing Master for the occasion . Bro . Chesters-Thompson was presented b y Bro . W . H . Hoyland , P . M ., D . C . A Board of Installed Masters was

opened , at which there were 30 Past Masters present , and the installation was proceeded with , and Bro . Chesters-Thompson was duly inducted into the chair of K . S . On the re-admission of the brethren , the VV . M . was proclaimed and saluted . The working tools were presented by Bro . J . Melling , P . M . The following were invested officers for the ensuing year , and were addressed by Bro . Hoyland , P . M .

After good wishes had been expressed from the numerous visitors present , and the singing of a beautiful anthem by Bro . N . Dumville , P . P . G . S ., Bro . Kinnell , and others , the lodge was closed by Bro . Chesters-Thompson , VV . M .

The members of the lodge with their guests subsequently dined together , where a most splendid banquet had been prepared by Bro . Fox , the manager of the hotel . The tables were profusely decorated with roses and other rare flowers and plants , with innumerable fairy lamps , which gave the room a most brilliant and picturesque appearance . Also the menus and cards were of an unique description of

ye old English style , which added much to the adornment of the table , whilst the catering was of the very best . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were each proposed and responded to in short but pithy speeches . It was here plainly depicted how well adapted Bro . Chesters Thompson is for the president of such a meeting as his very good speeches and witty remarks kept the ball merrily

rolling . During the evening a handsome and costly Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Fitzgerald , P . M ., which bore the following inscription : "Presented by the brethren of Ardwick Lodge , 21 S 5 , to Bro . VV . Fitzgerald , P .

Craft Masonry.

received in the lodge since its foundation .

M ., as a token of esteem and regard for valuable services rendered as VV . M . during iSSg—90 . "
