We are glad to hear that the final total of receipts at the recent Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution exceeds ^ 13 , 840 , which is more by upwards of £ 300 than the final total in 1889 , and that , too , with a less numerous Board of Stewards . This is certainly

matter for congratulation . We were sanguine enough to hope for a result more nearly approaching £ 15 , 000 than £ 14 , 000 , but if all we hoped for has not been realised , it is something to find that the downward tendency has been checked , and that we are at last able to record an increase on the preceding Festival .

* * * The Board of Stewards for the Girls' School stands at 146 as against the 135 we recorded last week , and so far it is gratifying to know that our remarks of last week have borne fruit . But our readers must remember

that the Board is still nearly 100 below the average of ordinary years some two months before the Festival . We trust , therefore , that the lodges and brethren will

bestir themselves to still better purpose , and that after another short interval , we may be in a position to announce a more substantial increase in the number of Stewards .

* * * 'The adjourned meeting of the Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent

Institution will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Tuesday next , the 25 th inst ., when the question of amending the laws relating to the qualifications of candidates for admission will be thoroughly considered .

The petition for a new lodge , to meet at the Roebuck Hotel , Buckhurst Hill , to be called the Shurmur Cyclist Lodge has , we hear , been signed by over 60 brethren .

The brother whose name it is intended to associate with it is deservedly esteemed in that part of the province and it is to that fact , in a great measure , and the energetic action of Bro . Bromhead , that the proposal is meeting with such popular support .

The consecration of the Warrant Officers' Lodge , of which Bro . Mclnerney is to be the first W . M ., takes place at Freemasons' Hall on Thursday next , while

that of the Lombardian Lodge , with Bro . Stanley J . Attenborough as W . M ., is to follow on Friday , the Grand Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Gierke , being the Consecrating Officer on both occasions .

* * * Mark Masonry , like the Craft , is showing great activity just now in the constitution of new lodges . The Grand

Secretary , Bro . Matier , has made arrangements for consecrating the three " lodges for which warrants have just been granted , viz .: the Eclectic , No . 410 , to meet

at Mark Masons' Hall ; the Royal Connaught , No . 409 , at the Royal Pavilion , Brig hton ; and the Hertford Military Lodge , No . 408 , at Masons' Hall , Severn-street , Birmingham .

* * * We notice quite a number of names of prominent Masons in the list of those present at the levee held on Wednesday by the Prince of Wales on behalf of her Majesty , amongst others , Bros . W . W . B . Beach ,

the Lord Mayor , Col . Shadwell H . Gierke , Alderman Sir Polydore de Keyser , Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., Alderman Sir Henry Knight , Sir Morell Mackenzie , and others . * * *

We are pleased to learn from a correspondent in Bombay that the Grand Treasurer has arrived in the best health and spirits , and on the same day attended

Lodges Cyrus , No . 1359 , andSt . George , No . 549 , both installation meetings , when he was welcomed and entertained with the honour due to his rank , and the first-named lodge elected him an honorary member .

* * * Bro . Terry has commenced his holiday by assisting at Lady Reay ' s fancy fair and bazaar in aid of the fund for the benefit of the European General Hospital in Bombay , and Lady Dufferin ' s fund for the Medical

Mission for Native Women . In this he has had the help of Mrs . Terry and daughter , who have both entered into the work with much spirit , the result being a substantial addition to the receipts for these charitable objects .

* * * Those who know Bro . Terry best will not be surprised to learn that his idea of rest is simply change of work , and that he is quite incapable of saying " No " when an appeal is made to him to assist in any

charitable effort ; but he must not forget the main object of his journey , especially as we learn from the same source that he was threatened with invitations to several other Masonic meetings before leaving Bombay .

Bro . Ramsden Riley has been a collector of certificates since 1871 , and is credited with possessing probably the finest private collection in the world ; and , being naturally an authority on this subject , he was

enabled to classify the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter certificates ( a most difficult work ) nearly two years ago , but the previous difficulties had been so great , and his

collection still wanting a few of the " Ancient" series to corroborate certain peculiarities of their issue , he wisely decided to wait before giving the result of his labours to the Craft .

Following his usual custom , Bro . Riley has not been engaged in this somewhat arduous task for his own benefit , but we understand he has been working solely for the Grand Lodge Library , after which his collection will benefit such Masonic museums and libraries as may be found wanting help in this direction .

* * * Bro . Riley has dedicated a work on the subject , now nearly ready for the press , to his old friend , Bro . W . J . Hughan . It will contain illustrations of every form of

certificate issued , and if not privately printed will be issued to the Craft at a popular price . This book should be a valuable acquisition to every Masonic library . * * *

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Middlesex will this year be held on Saturday , the 14 th June , at the Athenjeum , Enfield , under the presidency of Bro . Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., P . G . W ., Provincial Grand Master .

Bro . the Rev . C . Hesketh Knowlys , Rector of North Meols , is holding a grand bazaar in May next , in the Winter Gardens , Southport , for the purpose of raising funds to complete the building of St . Simon and St . Jude ' s Working Men's Free and Open Church , the

foundation stone of which was laid by Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom with Masonic honours last autumn . Amongst other attractions will be a Freemason's stall , presided over by the Countess of Lathom

and the Countess of Crawford , assisted by the wives and daughters of several local brethren , amongst them Miss Sillitoe ( daughter of Bro . J . H . Sillitoe , Past G . Std . Br . ) , of 7 , Regent-road , Birkdale , Southport , by whom contributions will be thankfully received .
