Royal Masonic Medals .
( ENGLAND ) .
P | £ _ ,- | "/|_^ jiT was not until late last century that in England Royal t ' jksj : ^ S .-i Masonic Medals were struck to commemorate the conncct'iN a i ^ 4 - ^ ° ^ ^' "R ° J al Blood" with the Craft , and then the [•! ££ H I S 2 | ' pieces were not of much note . Farther on , however , they M g ^ Z .. „^ j §) lj 1 were worthy of Royalty and Freemasonry , so that during this century several specimens of the medallicart have been circulated , alike creditable to the designer and die-cutter .
Ot the Prince ot Wales Masonic Halfpenny Token there are very many varities , the original being No . LXIL , in Bro . Marvin ' s invaluable work on " Masonic Medals " ( Boston U . S . A ., 18 t < 0 ) . Obverse , Arms of the Grand Lodge of England ( " Modems , " ) a dove as crest , with two beavers as ( operative ) supporters , and the motto - ' Amor
Honor et Justitia . Legend . — " 24 th November , 1790 , Prince of Wales elected G . M . " llecerse . —A triangle , around which are the words "Wisdom , Strength , and Beauty , " with tools , Ac ., artistically arranged . Legend . — " Sit Lux et Lux Fuit . " The edges vary
considerably , e . g ., many have " Masonic Token I Sketehley Fecit 1794 ; others "Halfpenny , Payable at tho Black Horse , Tdwer Hill ;" " Masonic Halfpenny Token , MDCCXCIV ., " & c . There are also other differences , some being obvious blunders . Both the obverse and the reverse have been "muled" to a considerable extent . The
collection of the numerous pieces is quite a work ot time and difficulty , sis well as expense . The rarest and most valuable " mules " arc those of the obverse , used with a bust of the Prince of Wales , or of Frederick Duke of York , the rims of these also varying very much , and there are two
varieties of the Prince of Wales ' . The size of sill these , with one exception , is 18 ( i . e ., 18 sixteenths of an inch ) , the departure from the rule being an impression of the throe-quarter bust of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales to the ri ght , which is fully a size larger and makes a fine medal , ( 19 ) ; a fact I have never seen noted before .
OHVI : RSK . 1 { I : VI : HSK . MARVIN LXIV . MARVIN LXVI MARVIN LXIV . Still rarer arc the Masonic Pennies , reverse similar to No . LXIL , without the words "Wisdom , " Ac , and the legend " Masonic Penny , 1795 "; but the obverse practically tbe same save as to the legend " Pro Bono Publico . " The edge bears the words " Manufactured by W . Lutwyche , Birmingham . " Rarer still is another having bust of
the Prince of Wales to the ri-jht . This is mentioned in Batty s "Catalogue of the Copper Coinage of Great Britain , Ireland , Ac , " but I have never seen one , so far as my memory serves inc . The size is 20 , so that the large specimen , given by me , size 19 , comes between the Halfpenny and Penny of this extensive scries . All were struck in copper , though it has been declared , one or more , were of gold , but they were simply gilded on the former metal .
OlIYKllfcK . MARVIN CCLXII IIKVKIISK . Bro . Marvin ' s CCLXII ., is a fine medal having its obverse aecolafed busts of H . R-. H . the Prince of Wales , and H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence : the former wearing a Master ' s collar and square , and the latter one with six pointed star attached , probably denoting the
Royal Arch . Legend "GEO . A . F . P . WALL , G . M . Gcu , H . I ) . CLAIIE . NT , G . P . " The Prince of Wales , Grand Master , and the Duke of Clarence , Grand Patron of Royal Arch Masonry . The rercrse is so skilfully arranged and contains such a number of emblems most beautifully engraved , that it is necessary to see one of the pieces to fully appreciate the conspicuous merits of this able work by , probably Hancock ,
sis well as Kempson and Kindon . It appears to have been issued m MDCCCJI . ( according to the reverse ) , by Bro . " W . Hollins , P . M ., Hodgo ] N [ o . ] 38 , " now 43 , St . Paul ' s Lodge , Birmingham . 1 have seen it in white metal , bronze , and silver , and undoubtedly it is " one of the finest English Masonics , " as Marvin observes . The occasion of its being struck is not quite clear , but possibly was to commemorate
Royal Masonic Medals.
the Grand Mastership of one of the Princes , and the dignity of Grand Patron ( R . A . ) conferred on the other . Morzdorf is in error in stating that the souvenir was issued as a memento of the " Union of the two Rites " ( Craft and R . Arch ) , as that event did not occur until 1813 .
the only one known that was struck in 1 S 13 , and is of gold , is in the British Museum , and is a tiny medalet , possibly the smallest of the kind in the world , being onl y five-sixteenths of an inch in diameter . Attention was first directed to this wee souvenir b y Bro . Marvin , who made enquiries of me about it . There was no time lost between
then and having an excellent electrotype in the library of the Grand Lodge of England , through the efforts of Bro . Sadler , who furnished particulars thereof in the Freemason for September 2 nd , 1 S 93 . Obverse . Head of H . R . H . the " Duke of Sussex , " with the name as noted within inverted commas . Reverse . An equalateral triangle ,
with two hands clasped , held as if keeping up that figure , and the year 181 . 3 is below the base . Bro . Sadler ' s opinion is that it . was struck to commemorate the Union of December 27 th , 1813 , and I quite concur in that view . It is strange , however , that it has remained unknown and unrecognised , Masonioally , until now .
Om-KRSi :. MARVIN CCLIX . BKVEHSK . The next is supposed to have been issued in 1 S 19 , and is very rare and valuable . Am not aware of more than my own impression . in this country , but possibly there are more . I should like to hear if others are preserved . It is Marvin ' s CCLIX ., and is of bronze ,
size 24 . Obverse , clothed bust of the Duke of Sussex , wearing collar and jewel as Grand Master , Ac ., the legend being " H . R . H . FREDK . DUKE OF SUSSEX , M . W . G . M . " Reverse , the front of a Building , with legend "Free Mason ' s Hall , A . L . 5817 " above , and below " DEDICATED Sunt . 23 , 1819 . " I was enabled to trace its ori gin , by ' finding that the Freemasons' Hall , Bath , was dedicated on the day
mentioned , by H . R . H . the Duke of Sussex , G . M ., in the presence of the Grand Master of Ireland , and some five hundred brethren . All knowledge of the existence of this grand medal had been lost si g ht of by the brethren in Bath ; the particulars arriving in time to be noted at the celebration of the 150 th Anniversary of the Itoyal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , which I was privileged to attend .
There were two apparently struck during the same year ( 1843 Y ) , which are Marvin ' s CCLX . and CCLXI . The former has for obverse the Duke of Sussex , clothed as Grand Master , and legend H . R . H . P . ALII . FREDERICK DUKE OK SUSSEX , K . G . ; and reverse , square and
compasses on a wreath of immortelles , within being the inscri ption : "Boitx JA . V . 27 , 1773 . MAI :. An :. 4 , 1793 . DIED AIM :. 21 , 1843 , AGED 70 YEARS . " Size 20 . White metal , bronze , and possibly others . The other is a noble specimen of the niedallic art , size 20 , of bronze , and probably other metals .
OlIYKIISK . MARV | N CCLX , BEVEIISE . Obverse—Bust in profile to the ri ght ( Marvin has left for his piece ) , the Prince wearing a skull cap . Legend— "H . R . H . AUG . FUED . DUKE OK SUSSEX , G . M ., " and in small letters at the bottom , near the edge , " ENGRAVED IIV W . J . TAYLOR FISOM A . MODEL JIV H .
WKIGALL . Reoerse—A number of emblems , Ac , beautifully cut and admirably arranged , with the legend— " NEAR TO TUB THRO . VE HIT NEARER TO HIS FELLOW MAX . BoRN JAN . 27 , 1773 . DlED Al'lIIL 21 , 1843 . I consider this piece one of the noblest and best medallio souvenirs of a lamented Grand Master ever struck .
Ihoro are also modern Medals issued to celebrate the patronage of the Craft by tho English or British Royal Family , but the only one that can hold its own with tho foregoing is the magnificent Bronze Medal , struck by Bro . George Kenning , to commemorate the Jubilee
ot the reign ot her Majesty the Queen , who is one of the largest subscribers to the Central Masonic Charities , and the daughter of a Grand Master , as well as the mother of the Grand Master , and of a Past Grand Master .
