evinced by the I . P . M . as Master of the lodge . Under his guidance Bro . Young had brought the Iodge to a state of comparative perfection ; numerically , it had largely increased during the year ; financially , it occupied a better footing than had been the case for a long time previously ; whilst socially all had passed off agreeably and well . Bro . Young responded with evident feeling , and thanked the

brethren of the lodge for their unexpected gift , which he promised ever to treasure as the dearest of his possessions . He had worked solely with the view of promoting in every way possible the best interests of the lodge , and was happy to find that his efforts had so strongly commended themselves to his fellow members as to have led them to thus specially mark their approval of his conduct . In the future ,

as in past years , he vvould endeavour to serve the lodge to the utmost . " Hearty good wishes " vvere then given by the visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed . A recherche banquet followed , and subsequently the evening vvas pleasantly spent in song , speech , and toast . The VV . M . gave the first three toasts— "The

Oueen—Patroness of the Craft ; " "The AI . W . the Grand Master and the Grand Lodge ; " and "The Prov . Grand Master and the Provincial Grand Lodge of East Lancashire . " Bro . Young , LP . AL , then proposed "The VVorshipful AIaster . " In doing so , he alluded to the genial characteristics of his successor , and expressed the hope that under Bro . A'loss's management the progress which had been

marked in the lodge during the last 12 months might be maintained and even exceeded . After the toast had been honoured with great enthusiasm , the W . M . responded , and made touching reference to the very severe illness through which he had recently passed , and expressed his sense of indebtedness to the Great Architect for having mercifully raised him from the bed of affliction and

the gates of death to participate once more , along with the brethren whom he loved , in the delights and labours of the Alasonic Order . Bro . Phillips proposed " The Installing' Alaster , Bro . S . Scott Young , I . P . AI . " He said he received additional pleasure in bringing the toast before the lodge , inasmuch as it had been his honourable duty to initiate Bro . Young some years ago .

The members of No . 226 had testified that evening , by their handsome presentation to the I . P . M ., to the great and remarkable esteem in which he vvas held by them , and had borne abundant witness to the splendid services which their brother had rendered to the cause of Alasonry in that provincial town , lt was , 'therefore , quite unneccessary for him to further dwell upon Bro . Young ' s merits . So far he had

done great credit to the Craft , and , in the proposer s opinion , the future vvould show that greater honours were yet in store for him . Responding in his usual happy fashion , Bro . Young made graceful acknowledgment for the heartiness with which the toast had been received , and said he had only tried to do his duty . In order to attend the lodge he had been compelled

to travel some 4000 miles in all ; but he did not begrudge that in any way . The ritual of Freemasonry and its sacred and immortal principles vvere very dear to him . To that lodge he vvas specially indebted , and he intended , by continuing his connection with it in future years , to show that he vvas anxious to repay the debt of gratitude which he felt he owed to No . 226 .

Pro . J . VV . Lee , J . VV ., in a humorous speech , proposed "The Past Alasters of the Lodge . " Bro . Shuttleworth , P . M ., responded . Bro . Nuttall , P . AL , proposed " The Visiting Brethren , " and Bro . the Rev . Jungbluth vvas called upon to reply . A very appropriate response vvas given by this brother , who caused much amusement , in conclusion , by inviting the

brethren of No . 226 all to be present at the centenary of his mother lodge ( No . 2069 ) , which vvould take place in exactly 9 6 years from the present date . The other toasts were " The Officers , " " The Masonic Charities , " and the Tyler ' s toast . Songs were given by Bros . Chadwick , John Stansfield , and others .

" According to custom this event is ahvays looked forward to by the brethren with great pleasure , it being recognised as one of the most genial and social gatherings during the season . Great regret vvas evinced by all at the resignation of Bro .

G . T . Mullock , P . AL , from the post of Secretary , which office he had held for seven years in such an efficient manner and t J the great advantage of the lodge ; his resignation will be severely felt for some time , lt was proposed by Bro . Alartin Thomas "That the best thanks of the lodge be accorded to him for his great energies , and that a pleasing and substantial testimonial be presented to him on a future

occasion . " 1 his vvas received with true acclamation , and a Committee vvas formed for the purpose of deciding what form it should take . A ouiig m recognition of the great services rendered by him to the Craft in general and to Lodge 226 in particular . Bro . baits , in making the presentation , alluded in choice and appropriate terms to the zealous and devoted spirit

Provincial Meetings.

evinced by the I . P . M . as Master of the lodge .
