Keyser , P . M ., consented to represent the lodge
at the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and routine business having been transacted , the lodge vvas closed . The brethren then adjourned to the banquet table , the centre of which was adorned with blue satin , elegantly ornamented with Masonic emblems , the work and kind gift of Mrs . Banning .
Ample justice having been done tothe good things provided , the usual toasts were given . Bro . T . Fenn , President Board of General Purposes , proposed " The Grand Officers , " and said he wished the brethren to consider him as absent , otherwise he would be regarded as proposing his own health . He had been nearly 28 years a Grand Officer , and there vvere few Grand
Officers in London he did not know . The Grand Officers present that evening he knew intimately , because he had been associated vvith them in a great many important Masonic works , more particularly what had been generally called the revision of the Book of Constitutions . That description hardly conveyed what that work was . It occupied three years , and those vvho had the opportunity of
comparing the editions of 1 S 73 and 1 SS 4 could form an idea of what that labour was . Bro . Sir John Monckton vvas then President of the Board of General Purposes , and together with Bros . Col . Clerke , and Philbrick , and himself , composed the sub-Committee vvho did the work to vvhich he alluded . He was happy to see Bros . Sir John Monckton and Col . Clerke present that evening , and coupled the name
of the former to reply . Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . W ., said the toast as given by Bro . Fenn , culminated in " the rest of the Grand Officers , " and there he agreed vvith him , for the more rest they got the better for them . He trusted Colonel Clerke would know what rest vvas in the far-off future , and therefore they would look forward vvith hope . He had done that night what no good Mason should do—attend the banquet
without seeing the work , but he was engaged in duty . He congratulated the lodge—vvhich was a very young oneupon the exceeding prosperity of its condition . He knew it had one or two connected with it—Bros . Fenn and Keyser—together with a host of Past Masters , and working officers , which vvas enough to ensure success to any lodge . That success had been amply achieved , and he congratulated the lodge and the Master .
Bro . C . E . Keyser , P . P . G . W ., proposed " The Prov . Grand Master and Prov . Grand Officers , " and said that Bro . Halsey , M . P ., the Prov . Grand Master , wished him to express his great regret at not being able to be present . Their lodge had already received the purple , the VV . M . being a present Prov . Grand Officer , vvhich spoke well for it . He hoped that would be continued , for there vvas a
great desire on the part of the provincial brethren to receive Provincial Grand office . Having received the honours , they endeavoured to make themselves useful , and he trusted that before many years there would be an array of Past Masters with the purple . Bros . Slaughter , P . P . G . W ., and Cochrane , P . G . Chap ., responded .
Bro . Hall Renton , I . P . M ., then gave "The VV . M ., " and said that , having just vacated the office , he hoped the W . M . would rule worthily for the next year , and do so vvith feelings not only of great pleasure , but of considerable enjoyment . He ( the I . P . M . ) felt he vvas a very incompetent Master , and he vvas grateful at being relieved . He was glad to be assured by those vvho knew the W . M . that they
had a prospect of having that oflice filled in a manner worthy of the lodge over vvhich he would rule . The lodge was although young a promising child , and in the future would attain a position and rank which would be worthy of any lodge in the country . They had the assistance of some of the ablest Masons existing , vvhich was a fortunate thing for the lodge . He hoped the members would sufficiently
appreciate it , and especially the kindness extended by Bro . Fenn . He had great satisfaction in asking them to drink the W . M . 's good health , for he vvas sure it was Bro . Wakeford May ' s desire to maintain the prestige of the lodge . Bro . W . May , VV . M ., thanked the I . P . M ., although he felt he did not deserve the remarks made . He hoped to have the indulgence of the members and the assistance of
the Past Masters . It vvas the greatest honour one could feel to be put in the proud position of the chair , and a few years ago he never anticipated that honour . He could only thank the I . P . M . for the kind manner in vvhich his health had been proposed , and the brethren for receiving it so kindly . "The Initiate " was then given , and replied to by Bro . Dr . Christmas . Bro . Lennox Browne , P . P . G . W . Essex , Vice-President Board of General Purposes , responded for " The Visitors . "
Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
He said the W . M . had exercised a kind hospitality in not telling him that he vvas to respond , for if he had good digestion would not have waited upon appetite . This was the first time he had had the pleasure of being present , but it was his own fault , because his esteemed Bro . Fenn , under whom he had the honour to serve , had asked him once or twice . He thought that visitors esteemed the compliment
somewhat in proportion to those who were their hosts , and in this lodge the visitors were proud to be present . He congratulated the W . M ., vvith whom he had been acquainted for many years , and judging by the way that brother invested his officers , he knew he could say that all the visitors vvere sure that the lodge would prosper under his guidance .
The Worshipful Master then submitted "The I . P . M . and the Installing Master , " and in the name of the lodge presented Bro . Hall Renton , I . P . M ., with a Past Master ' s jewel , remarking that every member looked forward to see him for many years in the lodge . Bro . Hall Renton , I . P . M ., said he appreciated sincerely the compliment paid him , and he vvas glad to think that the
future of the lodge vvas assured . He hoped , as Bro . Keyser had said , that the members would be impressed vvith the duties of Masonry , for they had a great influence for good , not only in the Order , but in society in general . Bro . T . Fenn , President Board of General Purposes , proposed "The Health of Mrs . Banning , " and begged Bro . Dr . Banning to thank her in the name of the brethren for her beautiful and kind gift to the lodge .

The following brethren vvere invested by the W . M . for the ensuing year : Bros . E . Webb , S . W . j Ben Eckersley , J . W . j John Holroyd , P . M ., P . P , G . Ward , Stwds . j and J . B . Kirk , Tyler . The W . M . acted as Charity representative . After the lodge had been closed , the brethren subsequently adjourned to the dining-room to a banquet , presided over by the W . M .
The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been given and responded to , Bro . Duffin , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the VV . M ., " which was received vvith applause . The VVorshipful Master , in response , thanked the brethren for receiving the toast in such a hearty manner , and said his position that evening vvas somewhat unique , as that was the
third time he had been in the position of W . M . He said how ambitious he had been to rise to that position in that lodge , especially as he considered every member and officer vvas endeavouring to work the most perfect ritual , and thought they had been very successful . He did not make any promises at all , but sincerely hoped that the affairs of the lodge would go on as happily in the future as they had in
the past . The VVorshipful Master in proposing "The Health of Bro . Duffin , I . P . M ., " said he had very great pleasure in doing so , and thanked him earnestly for the admirable way in which he had installed him , and pointed out to them that Bro . Duffin vvas an ardent student of the ritual of Freemasonry . The work he had done that day reflected great
credit upon himself and also on the lodge to vvhich he belonged . Every one of them vvho had the pleasure of witnessing a ceremony performed by him must feel that there is something in Freemasonry , for there vvas always such a fire of soul , which must have a tendency to inspire every candidate ( vvho may have had the privilege of being initiated , passed , or raised by him ) with great interest in our
Society . There was no doubt whatever of the fact that during his year of office he set them all a noble example , and one that he trusted they would all endeavour to follow , and he ( the W . M . ) was sure Bro . Duffin might rest assured he had achieved greatness as regards the working and governing of a Masonic lodge , and he sincerely trusted that the success vvhich had attended him
during his year of office might continue to follow him in his future career in . Freemasonry . The W . M . then asked Bro . Duffin to receive a token and emblem vvhich the brethren of that lodge had subscribed to and desired him to present that evening as a mark of their esteem , and in appreciation of the services he had rendered to the lodge . Whilst it vvas a jewel of great intrinsic value , yet he ( the VV . M . ) felt he would not consider
that half so much as he would appreciate the feelings of the brethren towards himself , and he wished to say personally , that if ever a Freemason did deserve to wear a Past Master ' s jewel for merit and ability it was their I . P . M ., and he trusted that it might be an everlasting heirloom in his family so that those vvho were dear to him might know vvith what great esteem their husband and father vvas held . In conclusion , the W . M . said he trusted that Bro . Duffin might live long to wear the jewel .
The I . P . M ., vvho evidently vvas almost overcome by emotion , thanked them one and all for the kind way the toast had been proposed and received by them . He had always endeavoured to do his best as to the ruling of the lodge during his year of office , and he vvas glad to think
that they thought it satisfactory . He should ever esteem the handsome jewel they had presented him vvith , and he trusted to hand it down to his son , whom he hoped in time would become a Mason , and live according to its teachings . Bro . John Barker , P . M ., proposed " The Masonic Charities " in a very able manner .
Bro . G . H . Whitaker , W . M . Horwich Lodge , responded , and in his remarks referred to the great interest vvhich had been shown very recently in the exertions both of East and VVest Lancashire at the Festival of the Royal Masonic . Institution for Boys . The toast of " The Visiting Brethren " was ably proposed by Bro . S . Ayland , P . M ., and responded to by many brethren .
Other toasts followed , and vvere responded to . During the intervals an excellently-arranged programme vvas provided , the following brethren taking part : Bros . A . Lewtas , P . M . ; W . Sharpies , J . Caldwell , K . W . Martin , J . Green , and J . Westbrook , who acted as accompanist . A recitation— " The Charge of the Light Brigade "—by Bro . C . E . Towell , W . M . 2359 , vvas rendered in an admirable manner .
