To Correspondents.

We are ahvays pleased to receive reports o £ meetings 01 lodges from our correspondents , but we must impress on them the importance of brevity . It should always be remembered that the Freemason is intended for the general Masonic reader , and many matters of interest tc

the members of a private lodge are not of sufficient importance to be circulated beyond the locality . The increase in the number of lodges and the ever increasing demands on our space renders the condensation of reports more than ever necessary .

Masonic Notes .

The news that Prince George ' s attack of enteric fever is of a comparatively mild form , and that his Royal Highness is progressing very favourably , will be received everywhere with the most unbounded satisfaction . The attack was promptly met , and the Prince of

Wales at once had his son removed from Sandringham to Marlborough House , so that the best medical advice mi ght be constantly available . We deeply sympathise

with our illustrious Grand Master in the anxiet y which this illness of his younger son must be causing him , and we trust that the young Prince will be speedily restored to health .

* * * Bro . the Earl of Bective , M . P ., was prevented by indisposition from attending the annual meeting at Wigton , on the 6 th instant , of his Provincial Grand Lodge . It is only , therefore , in an indirect manner

that he has heard of the kindly intentions towards him of the lodges and brethren under his rule . A reference to the Calendar will show that in January next his lordship will have been Grand Master of the Province for 25 years , and the Provincial Grand Secretary , Bro .

G . J . McKay , has suggested that the brethren should commemorate the auspicious event by purchasing a ri ght of presentation to one of the funds of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution to be called " The Beotive Presentation . " The scheme is worthy of the Province ,

and the more so , as it will directly associate its chief with the Jubilee of the Charity . There is every reason to believe that it will be carried into effect , as the mere announcement of the proposal was received with the heartiest demonstrations of favour .

Bro . Lord Bective is indeed a Mason whose services are worthy of so honourable a recognition . In addition to his 25 years' Prov . Grand Mastership of Cumberland and Westmorland , his lordship has \ v on distinction in nearl y every branch of Masonry . He has been Grand

Superintendent of Royal Arch Masons since 1877 , was S . G . W . of the Mark Grand Lodge in 1866 , and has been Prov . Grand Mark Master of Cumberland and Westmorland since 1872 . He is also a Past G . Sovereign of the Order of Rome and the Red Cross of

Constantine , and Hon . President of the Rosicrucian Society of England . He has at different times given his support to our three Charitable Institutions , and in 1868 presided as Chairman at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . Latterly his health has not

enabled him to play an equally prominent part in the affairs of his Order , but he is still as popular as ever with our Cumberland and Westmorland brethren ,

who have fared so prosperously under his auspices , and who will no doubt gladl y avail themselves of the opportunity afforded them by Bro . McKay ' s scheme to requite the services of their respected chief .

* * * There is yet another matter in connection with the recent meeting at Wigton on which we beg to congratulate the members of this northern Province . The brethren are generous supporters of our Institutions ,

but like many other Provinces , they appear latterly to have felt the need of some local Educational Charity . Last year they resolved on establishing one , and Bro . Dalrymple , its Secretary , found himself on this occasion in a position to congratulate his brethren on the

success which had thus far attended their efforts in its behalf . Bro . Dalrymple reported that all the lodges , chapters , and other Masonic bodies in the Province had supported the Fund , and that alread y the subscrip tions exceeded ^ 174 . We trust that future reports will be even more gratifying still .
