Rev . Stopford A . Brooke will read the next paper before the society , his subject being " Richard III . "

Bro . Lord Mayor Evans will preside at the distribution of prizes at the Birckbeck Institution on Wednesday , the 2 nd prox ., the prizes themselves being given away by Bro . the Duke of Fife . The Duke of Connaught presented the prizes to the successful members of the 2 nd Hants Artillery Volunteers at Portsmouth Town Hall on Tuesday , and gave some excellent advice to the corps .

By the kind permission of Dean Bradley , a Latin service was held in Westminster Abbey on Tuesday evening , in commemoration of the founder ( Queen Elizabeth ) and benefactors of Westminster School . The Countess of Granville and her daughters , the Ladies Leveson-Gower , have been staying for a short time vvith her brother-in-law , Bro . the Hon . Frederick Leveson-Gower , at his residence in South Audley-street .

Bro . Sir John E . Gorst , Q . C , M . P ., the new Financial Secretary to the Treasury , and lately Under-Secretary of State for India , has been succeeded in the latter office by the Hon . George N . Curzon , M . P ., eldest son of Lord Scarsdale .

The bazaar in the Waverley Market , Edinburgh , in aid of the fund for the Widows and Orphans of the Police vvas opened on the 12 nd instant by Bro . Henry Irving and Miss Terry , a very interesting address on behalf of the fund being delivered by the former .

Bro . T . Blundell Maple , M . P ., vvas prevented by illness from presiding at the dinner held at the Holborn Restaurant on the 12 th inst . of the members and friends of the South London Early Closing Association . His place , however , was very ably filled by Mr . C . T . Frye .

The collection of silver and silver-gilt plate formed by the late Lord Truro vvas sold by auction by Messrs . Debenham , Storr , and Sons , at their rooms in Covent Garden , on _ . Friday , the 13 th instant . The total realised vvas upwards of £ 5000 , some very good prices for individual lots being obtained .

The Prince of Wales hasforwarded a subscription to the " John Osborne Testimonial Fund , " among other subscribers being the Earl of Durham , Sir E . Clark , O . C ., M . P .,. Messrs . Tattersall . Sir Robert Jardine , M . P . 7 the Duke of Westminster , Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., and others .

The brethren of the Portcullis Lodge , No . 203 S , have obtained a lease of the historic Hanging Chapel , dedicated to St . Mary , near the parish church , Langport , and this ancient building has been handsomely fitted up for the use of the members of the Order . The new lodge vvas opened on Thursday , the 12 th inst .

Owing to the illness of Prince George of Wales , the arrangements of the Prince and Princess of VVales have , for the present , been set aside . Their Royal Highnesses were to have visited Mons . and Madame de Falbe at Luton Hoo on the 24 th inst ., and a distinguished party , including the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Teck , had been invited to meet them .

The annual Provincial Grand Lodge of Cambridgeshire is summoned for to-day ( Friday ) , at 4 p . m ., at the Guildhall , Cambridge , when Bro . Lieut .-Col . Robert Townley Caldwell , P . P . S . G . W ., will be installed as Provincial Grand Master by Bro . the Right Hon . Lord Henniker , P . S . G . W ., Provincial Grand Master of Suffolk , assisted by several Grand Officers . Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , was the principal guest at the Court dinner given by the Spectacle Makers ' ompany , at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , on the 12 th instant , under the presidency of Bro . Sir Polydore de Keyser , the Master . His lordship responded for the toast of "The House of Lords , " and Col . FitzGeonje for that of " The Army . "

The German Emperor has forwarded to the Lifeboat Institution a gold watch , bearing Ins Majesty ' s portrait , with the Imperial arms and monogram , for presentation to Mr . Benjamin Stout , coxswain of the Langhope lifeboat , with £ 24 for distribution among the crew , in recognition of their gallantry in rescuing the crew of the steamship Victoria , of Sunderland , which was wrecked in the Pentland Firth , 11 of the crew being German sailors .

A serious accident occurred on the London and North-Western line near Kendal on Monday , a number of trucks having become deUched from a ballast train just as the express from Manchester to Windermere was approaching . The driver of the express , seeing the danger , reversed his engine and put on his brake , the collision being in consequence far less serious . Some of the passengers recei ed a severe shaking , and it vvas three hours before the line was again in order for general traffic

Bro . John Derby Allcroft has been nominated for the position of High Sheriff for Shropshire . The Countess of Arran , wife of Bro . the Earl of Arran , K . T ., vvho has been very much out of health for some weeks past , is now quite convalescent and able to go out of doors .

Bro . Sir William Hart-Dyke , Bart ., M . P ., has been staying for some time at Bath , where he has been undergoing a course of treatment after an acute attack of rheumatic gout . Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., left his official residence at the Admiralty , Whitehall , towards the close of last week for the Wilderness , near Sevenoaks , on a visit to Lord and Lady Hillingdon .

The recent bazaar in Edinburgh in aid of the Police Fund and the Society for the protection of Children proved a very great success , the sum realised amounting , in round figures , to about £ 10 , 000 . The Queen has been pleased to approve of the appointment of Bro . the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres to be a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle , in the place of the late Earl of Minto , K . T .

Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Portland visited Nottingham on the 13 th inst ., for the purpose of opening , firstly , a new Gordon Boys' Home , and , secondly , a Chrysanthemum Show , held under the auspices _ of a local society . Their reception was most cordial .

Bro . VV . L . Jackson , M . P ., the new Chief Secretary for Ireland , accompanied by his private Secretary , left London for Dublin on Tuesday in order to take over the duties of his office , and vvas sworn In a member of the Irish Privy Council the following day .

The Duchess of Teck , who is President of the Surrey Needlework Guild , entertained the Vice-Presidents at the VVhite Lodge , Richmond Park , on Thursday , the 12 th inst ., when the work of the Kingston branch of the Guild vvas exhibited for inspection .

A handsome pulpit , designed by Sir Arthur Blomefield , has been placed in the parish church at Burghclere , near Newbury , at the cost of the parishioners , as a memorial to the late Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , who built the church and rectory .

Bro . the Earl of Onslow , G . C . M . G ., has submitted to the Queen his resignation of the Governorship of New Zealand on the ground of urgent private affairs , and it is expected his lordship will return to England early next spring .

The British Cycle Manufacturing Company have just opened extensive show rooms , repairing shop , and school at 42 , High-street , Camden Town , where a large number of their cycles will be on view . The well-known firm will also be exhibitors at the Stanley Show , Crystal Palace .

Bro . Lord Stalbridge , who , as chairman of the London and North-Western Railway Company , was to have presented the prizes to the successful students of the Railway Institute at Rugby last week , vvas unable to do so in consequence of the death of his mother , the Marchioness of Westminster .

The first Court of Aldermen since the induction into office of Bro . Alderman Evans as Lord Mayor of London , was held at the Guildhall on Tuesday , andthe first Court of Common Council on Thursday . Votes of thanks to Bro . Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., on his retirement from the chair vvere passed vvith acclamation by both Courts .

The Right Hon . C . T . Ritchie , M . P ., President of the Local Board , presented a challenge cup on the 12 th inst . to the St . Paul's Shadwell Club , as the winners of the trophy given by the Victoria Park Cricket Association , and spoke in enthusiastic terms of the value of the game as an athletic exercise .

The members of the Society for the Relief of Persecuted Jews ( Syrian Colonisation Fund ) met at Queen ' s Gate Hall , South Kensington , on the 12 th inst ., when a report of the Society's Commissioners was read , and showed thatthere was a terrible amount of poverty and distress among these poor people at Jaffa and in Jerusalem .

'The annual Colston banquets at Bristol vvere celebrated on Friday , the 13 th inst ., that of the Dolphin Society being held at the Victoria Rooms , Clifton , and honoured with the presence of Bro . Sir Michael E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., and the Duke of Beaufort , while Bro . Lord Carrington was present at that of the Anchor Society , held at the Grand Hotel .

The Duke of Connaught on Tuesday evening presented the prizes to the 2 nd Hants Artillery Volun ' eers at Portsmouth Town Hall , and , addressing the men , said what they wanted was that Volunteers should have a recognised position , and be told off for duty to vvhich they might get accustomed , and know how to undertake in case of need .

The Duchess of Albany , attended by Bro . Sir Robert Collins and the Hon . Mrs . Murton , visited several of the colleges at Oxford on Manday , and in the afternoon vvas present with the young Duke and Princess Alice of Albany at a grand concert given in the hall of Christ Church by the University Musical Union . In the evening her Royal Highness dined at the Deanery , several University dignitaries being of the party .

The Duchess of Abereorn , accompanied by her daughters , the Ladies Alexandra and Gladys Hamilton , and her son , Lord John Hamilton , and the Ladies Evelyn and Mabel Crichton , daughters of Bro . the Earl and Countess of Erne , left Baron ' s Court for Londonderry on Saturday last , and spent several hours at the exhibition recently opened in that city to aid in defraying the cost of altering the old Corporation Hall into a Local School of Art .

In consequence of the heavy rains of last week , the Thames in the Windsor and Eton district has been again rising , and on Sunday the water vvas running into the Home Park near Victoria Bridge and the garden opposite the Royal lodge was submerged . There have also been Hoods in Berks , Wilts , and Oxfordshire , while the Kennet and other tributaries have become so swollen that large tracts of land extending for several miles are inundated .

At the Perseverance Lodge , No . 1743 , Anderton's Hotel , on Saturday last , Bro . C . E . Ferry , P . M ., Sec , delivered a lecture explanatory of the Ritual and Symbols of the Third Degree . Lord Sheffield ' s team of cricketers have arrived at Adelaide on board the P . and O . steamer Arcadia , and met with a very hearty reception . The first match will be commenced to-day ( Friday ) .

On the 7 th inst .. Mrs . Symonds , wife of Bro . the Rev . A . Symonds , P . P . G . Chap . Cheshire , and rector of St . Thomas , Stockport , opened the new Mitre Coffee Tavern , Higher Hillgate , Stockport , in the presence of a large company .

We understand that Bros . Frank Richardson , P . G . D . ; Edward Letchworth , P . G . D . ; and J . H . Matthews , P . D . G . D . C , have started to Egypt for a trip up the Nile , the latter taking his youngest daughter . They intend , however , to be back in time to spend Christmas in this country , and vve all wish them a very pleasant holiday .

The Prince of VVales was prevented by the illness of his son , Prince George of Wales , from opening the Industrial Exhibition at King ' s Lynn on Saturday last , but his place vvas taken by the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , who vvas accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , and the Duke and Duchess of Fife .

The President and Council of the Royal Society have recommended Professor Charles Sapworth and Professor A . W . Rucker for the Royal Medals this year , and her Majesty has been graciously pleased to approve of the awards . The Copley Medal has been awarded to Professor Canniezaro , and the Davy Medal to Professor Victor Meyer .

The Sadlers' Company are making arrangements to hold an Exhibition of Saddlery and Harness in their Hall about June , 1892 . Many objects of interest have been already promised , and the Company will be glad of the co-operation of all who may be in any way able to contribute to the success of the display .

Last week there vvas a three days'sale by auction by Messrs . Chinnock , Galsworthy , and Chinnock , ofproperty lying in and around the City-road . At the beginning of the 99 years' lease , vvhich is just falling in , the estate , of io £ acres , consisted of open fields , vvhich are now covered with houses . The property vvas sold in 131 lots , and realised £ 138 ,

655-With the object of endowing a cot in the Victoria Hospital for Children , Chelsea , the members , associates , and graduates of " The Children's Salon" have taken Princes' Hall , Piccadilly , for the 13 th and 14 th of January , when they will be "At Home" to their friends . Only children will take part in the entertainment , particulars of which may be had of Captain Blount , the Secretary at the hospital .

A part of the cavalry depot barracks at Canterbury was destroyed by fire on Monday evening , namely , the range of buildings about 100 yards long , extending from the officers ' quarters to the further corner of the barrack square . On the ground floor in the stables were about 100 horses belonging to the 1 ith Hussars , but these vvere safely got out , and also a good deal ot the property in the quarters above and the store rooms , but the damage is estimated at from £ 8000 to £ 10 , 000 .

The Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 , has removed its labours from the Hercules Tavern , Leadenhallstreet , to Deacon ' s , 3 , VValbrook , City , where , under the able Preceptorship of Bro . Bellchamber , it is hoped its former career of usefulness will be maintained . To suit

the convenience of many City brethren the hour of opening is fixed at 7 p . m . Bro . Pitt , for many years the esteemed Secretary , continues his duties , and Craftsmen in the neighbourhood as well as the members of the parent lodge may spend two hours on every Wednesday with great advantage .

The triennial festival dinner in aid of the funds of Charing Cross Hospital was held at the Hotel Metropole , on Tuesday , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Evans , Bros . Sir G . Hunter , Sir John Puleston , Alderman and Sheriff Tyler , and Alderman Sir Polydore de Keyser being among the principal supporters of the chair . The subscriptions announced in the course of the evening

amounted to £ 7576 , while the Lord Mayor read a letter from Mr . Passmore Edwards , in vvhich that gentleman undertook to erect , at his own cost , a convalescent home , to contain 50 beds , in connection with and always to remain under the control of the Governors of the hospital , enclosing as an earnest of his intention a cheque for £ 5000 , and announcing his intention of paying over the remainder as soon as the foundation-stone had been laid .

THE STANLEY SHOW ot * CYCLES . —The half-crown admission to the Crystal Palace will be abolished on the two Saturdays of the Show , the 28 th inst . and the sth prox ., the admission being one shilling each day . l'he Show opens on Friday next , and , as usual , will accupy the vast space in the Grand Central Nave and Transept , as well as the various Courts . Over 1500 machines will be exhibited

by some 320 exhibitors . The entries include avast number of new tyres . An important feature of the Show will be a special stand for inventors . The Show is duly certified by the Board of Trade , under the provisions of the Patents , Designs , and Trade'Marks Act , 1 SS 3 . This Act provides for the publication of any description of the invention during the period of the exhibition , or the use of the invention for

the purpose of the exhibition , or its use by any person elsewhere without the privity or consent of the inventor without prejudicing the right of the inventor to apply for and obtain provisional protection , and a patent within six months of the opening of the exhibition . The right of application for registration of designs is also protected by this Act for a period of six months from the opening of the exhibition .
